Why NRL must intervene in Penrith Panther’s attempt to poach Ivan Cleary

If what Paul Kent said on NRL360 Tuesday night turns out to be true about Ivan Cleary engineering his exit from the Wests Tigers to go to the Penrith Panthers, the NRL need to step in and act swiftly.

According to Kent, Cleary met last week with Penrith chairman Dave O’Neill for what he thought might be a conversation about his son Nathan, the current Panthers halfback.

Kent believed O’Neill expressed interest in bringing Ivan Cleary back to the club he previously coached when he finishes his contract in 2020.

Cleary allegedly responded he would be interested in returning to the club in 2019 despite having a binding contract with the Wests Tigers for the next two seasons.

This meeting should raise huge alarm bells at League Central.

Under the NRL’s current rules with players negotiating with clubs they have to be entering the final 12 months of their contract. Why should it be different for coaches?

A situation where a chairman is colluding with another coach who has multiple seasons on contract across town should never happen for either coaches or players.

Ivan Cleary also should never be in a situation where he agrees to a meeting under the premise where he believes the topic of conversation is about his son employed by the club.

Rules surrounding coaches and players need to get stricter to ensure the sanctity and

professionalism of the competition doesn’t dissolve.

The Wests Tigers trumpeted the signing of Cleary and he soon gave hope to a fan base starving for success. His famous ‘get on the bus’ quote brought a ground swell of support not previously seen at the joint venture club.

Tiger fans believed he would be the coach that rebuilds them into a premiership contender. With a contract until the end of 2020 the fans should be entitled to believe another club won’t poach their coach just to help their own messy situation which they created.

Having signed originally for three years it meant Ben Matulino was happy to move from New Zealand to play under his former coach.

It meant Russell Packer was happy to leave St George Illawarra after repairing his once broken NRL career.

David Nofoaluma signed a new four-year deal just days after Cleary was announced as the coach and Moses Mbye has taken a leap of faith by leaving an awful situation at Canterbury to play under Cleary at the Tigers.

Cleary speaking to rival teams while having several seasons remaining has to be punished by the NRL. While there appears to be no loyalty left in professional sport the least the NRL can do is step and put a stop to what is fast turning into a circus.

If Penrith want to sack their coach and find a replacement they’re entirely within their rights to do so but it shouldn’t come at the detriment of another club.

In 2017 the NBA fined the Los Angeles Lakers $500,000 after they were found to have been talking with Indiana star Paul George about becoming a Laker. The NRL need to follow a similar path if they want to protect the integrity of their competition.

The NRL would be loving the controversy as it puts more eyes on the game - and this time it's not a player doing something stupid - and wouldn't dare try to defy Gus Gould…. They are gutless hacks.

Knowing the NRL - they'd make the Tigers "Show Cause" as to why they should keep him on books, and strip us of points for some random reason.

Yes that was the whole point of the article…this place needs a facepalm emote just for responding to you.

I agree..

This is a bad look for the game.
All drama. Gould is scum.

The NRL should want all teams to be healthy and successful because ultimately it makes the NRL healthy and successful…. Not only that fair and a better product for the world to see.

Ivan has the tigers in the rest state they've been in for years, especially as an entertainment product. Losing him would be extremely hard to recover from.

May as well just pencil us in as collosal losers for the next decade. May as well just liquidate us as a club and have a 15 team game. This is atrocious.

Cleary has done a steady job but overall he has 16 wins form 39 games at the club.

He has also made some dubious long term signings.

I have been impressed by the way the side has performed in line with the roster we put on the paddock this year. Their have been clear improvements around consistency for mine across a season.

However it nots like we have an exciting young roster. At least I don't see it that way.

Maybe part of the compensation should be for Penrith to take on some of those dubious long term contracts eg Reynolds as thats what Cleary wanted in the form of a player swap, why should we be stuck with his mess for another 3yrs while he trots off into the sunset living in his sons pocket.

I just hope all this shit derails the Panthers season ,a place with no loyalty

NRL could call a meeting and throw it on the table and say we need no poaching of coaches the same as players , our game looks like crap every week let get pro active and pass this tonight and it's starts tonight at 1 minute past this board meeting so no shonky stuff goes down

The NRL thrives on rumours uncertainty and back stabbing !

How am I the one "going on about the NRL having to intervene" when I've not written a single word on the topic? See this is why a facepalm is needed…

If they had the balls and the inclination they could probably look into whether a general breach like bringing the game into disrepute by engaging in tortious conduct had taken place but I doubt they have either.

Yes they'd treat us like they treat rape victims in Pakistan. Such justice

oh my god, they are grown men, not little children that need to told how to act and what to do. What is wrong with offering someone a job?
If Ivan wants out of his contract with WT he can surely negotiate that, why on earth would you want a head coach who doesn't want to be there!

If Cleary goes he can take McQueen and Packerlino with him

Taylor signed McQueen.

Nope signed a few weeks after Cleary started. Taylor made many dud decisions we don’t need to attribute others too him.

What gets me is why would you go back to a place that sh*t on you in the past, where were all the riff cronies supporting Ivan when Gus punted him the last time ?
If what Kent is reporting is true, then Ivan virtually has destroyed what ever credibility he has at the WT amongst players and fans by accepting the underhanded offer initiated by Gus and the Riff board that just stinks.
