Been thinking about getting some of these for my place

Anybody have these?

How do they go in reducing summer heat???
I will be getting them - if I do - on ''exposed'' west side and s/w front of house windows so this half house gets the worst of the summer arvo sun….other windows not visible from street, and dont cop the heat

Whats an approx price they charge ......

When we got it done 10 years ago , they were about $700 per window (it depends on the size of the window) but the best investment you can make, decreases the noise from outside 10 folds and brilliant for shift workers like me and can sleep during the day as when the shutters are completely down it's like night time .
They also block alot of the out side heat (big difference) i would highly recommend it Champ .

Tinting is worth looking into also Ink

Brother in Law got 3 windows 2 at 1800 x 1800

One at 1800 x 1200

All up cost was under $800 and that was in Gladstone where they charge like a wounded Bull and they look really good

Can't comment at this stage how much they will reduce the heat as they have only had them about 2 months

It depends on the tint used…The best tint for reducing heat is the one with the "mirror" look...again it comes down to the look of the product against the house..

What Ink is looking at is also a decent security deterrent too, as opposed to window tinting. I had the windows in my last house tinted (single storey). Cost about $4000 for the whole house from memory and looked a treat when finished. You couldn't see inside either which was also handy. The other benefit of the window tint we got was that it was also a bonded security film, so if someone ever thought they'd break in through the window, they'd have a much tougher time than expected, as the window would not shatter, they'd effectively have to yank the whole thing out.

When the wife started doing shift work in the mid 00's we got Modern Roller shutters installed, they are expensive but hopefully will add to the value of the home and are definitely a security device.

Another possibility is a carport up the western side of the house, with some transluscent sheeting possible near where the windows are, wrapping around to an awning at the front shading the main b/r window

Is your biggest concern more the afternoon sun (glare) ,the heat , security or a combination of everything Ink ??

We brought our house and they were Already fitted. Great at keeping out light! No good at keeping out heat . Insulation is more important. You would be better of getting ducted air con, that's what we ended up doing and while the initial outlay was costly if you have a house that's holds the heat you while find its necessary .

Probably heat/arvo sun mainly Happy….have a/c in the lounge room, couldnt afford it ducted right throughout, well possibly could but I prefer to feed me an my family not the electric co's

carport //awning I think would really put a dent in the hot arvo sun baking 50% of the place

Will get some quotes soon I think

If u need any help let me know . I'm a carpenter in maroubra area

I'm guessing you won't be closing the garage / awning in ,if you do it might even make the area hotter

If you made it a lockable awning with a security mesh to enclose the area you could use it as another room

I looked at doing it in our back area , we get a beautiful arvo breeze and was going to cost about $ 7 k to fully do a 65m2 area , so we can set up a TV , fridge etc and have another entertainment area that would keep the mozzies away in the evening that didn't need air cons

My problem in the end was the roofing , as it was 50 ml roofing it wouldn't be cyclone proof and council wouldn't give us approval so it was going to cost about 14k
