Woods at lock

Something that came to my mind in the Taupau thread.

Good idea?

The way i see it, Taupau probably should be starting. I've been against it cos i like his impact off the bench, but if we start with the back row that's starting in the Sharks trial on Saturday, idk how we compete. I have no doubt that that back row will start against the Titans, how long it lasts though is another question.

Back to my point though, Taupau has to start, so instead just making a straight swap for Galloway, why not shift Woods to lock? He could play extended minutes, something i believe he'd have in him. Its also a trend in the game that's growing, that is that locks are 3rd props. Aiden Tolman is the latest to move to lock. If he could do it, why couldn't Woods?

As soon as we get tapau's minutes up I beleive this is a given.

Its where the game is heading. If Merrin and Tolman have it in them, then surely Woods does. It would give us an extra big boppa on the field, and he'd almost play 80\. Then the front row rotation could be Keithy, Taupau, Ava and Lodge.

I can easily see Woods shifting in 2016 or 17.

Were stronger in the front row than the back row so it seems logical to me. The roosters used FPN there aswell so I'd imagine Taylor being a fan of the theory.

Yep, forgot about FPN. With even Ben Creagh moving to prop, it seems both positions are interchangeable now

Taupau or Woods in my opinion have to go to lock. It would still give us a great prop rotation plus we would have 2 big forwards rolling up the middle all game.

Lodge is also a second rower

I've thought the same… Back when we still had Gibbs.
For mine, I think we should be grooming Lodge for the Job. He seems to have a bit more leg speed and drive the Woodsy... And is always on the Front Foot.
Marty is still young and would be good to see what he can do with his game. His biggest strength is also his biggest weakness - He's just too good at what he does!!
But, If he can harness his impact to a more sustainable level and build his motor... He'll be unstoppable.
I do love Marty, Woods and Lodge... Woods and Lodge are built for the job, If Marty wants to start he needs to find an angle.

All that said, The bulldogs have had success with starting fat Sam - For only 10 minutes and knocking the stuffing out of everyone. Maybe Marty could do it for the 1st 20 and then Jesse comes on to do more of the same....

I don't know. I don't want Halatau at 13, too small IMO but I like Woods in the middle and Taupau's impact off the bench is always noticeable.

Our backrow looks decent for first time in ages

I think Taupau and Lodge are better 13 options than Woods due to them both being more mobile.

Woods actually isn't even an option for me as a back rower.

I would start the year with Marty at 13 with Akaoula coming of the bench to give him a spell continuing the impact in that role.

Woods, Ava, Lodge and Galloway as our 4 front rowers.

Second row up for grabs with the rest.

Woods has always seemed like a new school lock to me. He has been playing prop because of his size, however the way he plays is more suited to the modern day lock. In the past we haven't had a strong enough front row rotation to allow him to move back there but now in Galloway, taupau, Ava, lodge, Buchanan, brown etc I believe we do.

Woods at lock would allow the props to do the tough 1st, 2nd tackle hit ups then woods to hit it up on the 3rd or 4th after we've got a roll on and his footwork/offload could wreck even more havoc then it does now. He would be far more effective there imo

I u see stand your way of thinking most 13s are now being used as a 3rd prop.

In that way of thinking, y not just put taupau at prop and leave woods where he is.

Why does this topic keep coming up?
Woods is not a lock. If we want to play the most boring style of footy then lets have 5 props starting the game and play 1 out.
The same as Taupau is not a lock.
I just wish people would stop looking for something that is not there.
If you were thinking long term lock, then I would have Sirro at lock who can either ball play or hit a good line and can ease pressure of Moses and Brooks if needed. That said we dont really have an outstanding 2nd rower to take that place atm.
At the end of day it comes down to the style that Taylor has set the team on playing but playing Woods at lock is nonsense.
