Woods at lock

I u see stand your way of thinking most 13s are now being used as a 3rd prop.

In that way of thinking, y not just put taupau at prop and leave woods where he is.

But you want the 13 to have some mobility to help tie up the middle defensively

One position I'm keen to see who Taylor picks , we should get a read at what JT's motivation is

Woods is a prop, out and out… you can just see it in the man, he relishes the contact, enjoys dominating, and maybe I am the only one who sees it, but during his breathers he seems to study and pick targets for his second stint talking to them while he works.

You dont make a man like that meter his workrate to last for big minutes, you send him out there to tell opponent to pick up the soap.

Woods is not a lock. If we want to play the most boring style of footy then lets have 5 props starting the game and play 1 out.
The same as Taupau is not a lock.
I just wish people would stop looking for something that is not there.
If you were thinking long term lock, then I would have Sirro at lock who can either ball play or hit a good line and can ease pressure of Moses and Brooks if needed. That said we dont really have an outstanding 2nd rower to take that place atm.
At the end of day it comes down to the style that Taylor has set the team on playing but playing Woods at lock is nonsense.

Agree…this topic is all about fitting Tapau in the starting lineup....Put him in the 2nd row out wide with Sue and have Sirro at lock!...its so obvious?

:roll

I'm guessing that we now have three dressing rooms and Woodsy there by himself in 1 of them

Any changes in our rotation from last year will depend entirely on Buchanan for me. If he carries his pre-season form then I think he could easily earn a bench spot, with a more flexible take on our lock rotation.

8\. Woods
10\. Galloway
11\. Akauola
12\. Sironen
13\. Taupau
14\. Seumanufagai
15\. Buchanan
16\. Lodge
17\. Sue

It may be lacking punch off the bench, but I would have Sironen, Sue, Taupau and Lodge all rotating through lock, with Sirro and Sue playing back row and Taupau and Lodge helping at prop.
It'll be hard to manage minutes, but you couldn't say we'd lack size.

If Buchanan falls away then I'd have a Santi or Liolevave/Funaki coming in, Lodge to lock and Marty to play front row.

I think Woods could play lock, I think he is better suited to being a prop.

The fact that he has extra mobility for a prop is his competitive advantage.

My preference for lock is Santi, his mid field work rate would tie up the middle nicely.

The game has long moved away from ball playing locks. The modern lock has to defend in the middle and take hit ups one of the ruck.

The ball playing skillfull back rowers all play on the edge these days.

My preference for the pack would be

8\. Woods
9\. Farah
10\. Galloway
11\. Siro (left side)
12\. Sue
13 Santi

Reserves
Taupau
Lodge
Ava
Halatau

With that bench, at some point, one of the front rowers will need to play some time at 13 to rest Sue and Santi.

The other option would be to drop Ava and bring in a second rower prob Lio and in that case Id flick Halatau for a genuine utility or impact player (Cherrington or Moltzen as examples)

IMHO Taupau is not 80 minutes/40+ tackles player. I think his best position ATM is bench.
So my props are: Woods (8) and Seumanufagai (10)
2 row: Liolevave (11), Sue (12), Santi (13)
Bench: Taupau, Buchanan, Akauola, Galloway
18 Lodge
Go Tigers

Every post has Sironen in their starting 13\. I pray this kid lives up to the hype this year.

Agree. I like the old school, cover defending lock. Those of you who had the pleasure of watching Raper et. al. will know what I mean.

I am not yet sold on Santi, but he has a good motor and is very mobile and can tackle. Woods is the best prop going around so leave him be.

If Sheens had made this move this forum would be going into meltdown.

Excuse my ignorance….but when they say the lock is playing tight, does that mean he plays inside the second rowers in defence?

Siro isn't small. He is very good in attack and his defense will get better with experience.

Sue is not small in any way.

Halatau, small yes! But he/Santi could be the workhorse we need.

Woods is a mongrel, effective prop. The last thing you'd want is reduce his effectiveness by playing him longer. He's only still 24/25? He has a long time ahead of him- let him be what he is right now IMO.

The backrow is our weak spot without a doubt. But I don't think weakening another position is the right way to go.

14\. Ava

17\. Funaki/Akaoula

Leave woods at prop
Siro can come on for second row lock or even the halves ava and lodge to swap with front row and then there are second rowers to rotate

Yes, the lock defends in the middle of the field (inside the second rowers) along with the 2 props and the hooker.

The only variation of this Ive seen in recent times is with Watmough and G Stewart, they seemed to swap, taking tuns at defending in the middle and right edge.
