Aaron Woods says if Ivan Cleary had arrived earlier he may have stayed at Wests Tigers

Aaron Woods has made the stunning confession he might have been swayed to stay at the Tigers had Ivan Cleary taken over the reins sooner.

In the biggest nod to Cleary's rebuild at Concord, the Australian and NSW enforcer has enjoyed his time so much under the former Warriors and Panthers boss he might have fulfilled his ambition to be a one-club player had he worked with the coach earlier.

Asked if Cleary had been appointed sooner would it have convinced him to stay at the Tigers, the Bulldogs-bound Woods said: "Probably, you know.

"There was a couple of weeks where we had no coach and I was getting hammered left, right and centre because they wanted a decision. If I got to know him a bit better you never know things might have changed, they might not have changed.

"I've really enjoyed my time under Ivan and he's been outstanding. He's a really good coach and it sucks to be leaving especially when you see how good he's been. The club's really good, they've got someone like Ivan to take over and I'm a bit shattered I'm leaving and he's still going to be coach here."

Woods inked a four-year deal with the struggling Bulldogs from 2018, but there are fresh questions about Des Hasler's future at the family club despite one of the most successful clipboard carriers of the modern era signing a two-year extension in April.

The Bulldogs are only a mathematical chance of playing finals following their big loss to the Broncos on Thursday night and will be desperate for Woods and Warriors playmaker Kieran Foran to arrive during the summer.

Cleary's Tigers makeover will only be taking shape then as they prepare to farewell Woods and James Tedesco (Roosters) – Mitchell Moses was granted a mid-season release to join the Eels – and his skipper is convinced the joint venture will be a force again despite winning just three of 12 games under their new boss.

Woods maintains there was never any discussion with Cleary about relinquishing the captaincy, despite he and Tedesco failing to meet a club-imposed deadline to sign new deals earlier in the year after Jason Taylor's sacking.

"I love the boys and I've really loved playing under Ivan," Woods said. "He's really reserved and once we are in meetings or at training he's really to the point. That's what I like. There's no beating around the bush with [him].

"The way we play … I've really enjoyed [that] under him as well. He's been really good for me and although I'm leaving he's still been the same. He's been really professional and it's just like talking to a mate really. The club is in really good hands with Ivan."

Despite little more than pride to play for over the final rounds, Woods ground out an entire 80 minutes in the Tigers' loss to the Sea Eagles last week, just four days after the State of Origin decider.

He has been the public face of the Tigers' messy contract wrangle when they kept just Luke Brooks out of their so-called "big four", and was even booed by his own fans at the height of the drama.

"The first couple of times it sucked, especially at a club you love," Woods said. "They've got an opinion and if they're not happy that's what they do. I'm not going to hate them or not because they go for Wests Tigers and they're just disappointed.

"You've got to move on and if you let little things like that worry you you've got bigger problems in life. Obviously, I never thought I would leave the club."

Woods will be reunited with Moses when the Tigers take on the Eels at ANZ Stadium on Sunday.

Three things about the article…
1\. How dare they call him an enforcer
2\. Glad Ivan showed up EXACTLY when he did.
3\. The regret has already begun lol

what a load of bullshit he had mad e his mind up long before, other wise he wood have taken the big money he was offered, hes a grub.

It is what it is,you know….blah,blah,blah....no one forced him to leave, the amount the dogs are paying him it's probably in everyone's best interest that he moved on.

Seriously Woods has an IQ of a 6yo…ummmm. all along he said he won't sign until he knew who the coach was Ivan was appointed and 5 weeks later he signed elsewhere... he is a dumb turd

This guy is freaking out even more than Donald Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon over Russia with Dessie looking like a dead man walking. It's starting to dawn on him what a massive mistake he's made. This is priceless. You've made your bed you sook. Just go.

A very successful wealthy one at that, and all at the ripe old age of 26.

Jesus Christ, he might as well just admit he just made the biggest mistake of his life. How could you not be soiling yourself and waking up in cold sweats given the Dogs form and the coach hanging by a thread. The exact opposite of what he claimed he was leaving for. I don't doubt Cleary has made a good impression on him and he's probably wishing Cleary got here earlier. But he didn't, but it's no excuse as Noffa re-signed not long after. The bottom line is, he had wanted out for weeks, if not months beforehand because it looked like this club wasn't going anywhere. And the reality is that we still might not go far in 2018, but regardless our prospects look brighter than the Dogs. I have no sympathy for the buffoon, on the contrary I am loving it. I was expecting karma to hit him, but not while he was still here

Not doing too badly for a 26 year old who is accused of being as dumb as whatever superlative you want to call him. Imagine how well he would be going if he was really smart.

Self-serving revisionist crap. If it helps him sleep at night fine. Reality is he wanted to join a more successful club and he's now realising maybe it's not the golden ticket to premiership glory he thought it would be. He makes these comments safe in the knowledge he cannot get out of the contract. I suspect even if Canterbury offered him a get out tomorrow he'd still stick with them.

He might not be so quick to run his mouth about us now like he said he would once he gets to the Dogs. Never forget the contempt he showed by sitting down for that interview, not caring that it was embarrassing to the club and the supporters. Because at the time, he thought he had a golden ticket, he thought he had the upper hand. Now it's blowing up in his face and he's trying re-build the bridges that he burned to the ground. Yeah, nice try.

He's clearly already regretting the decision. At the time of the signing, even blind Freddy could see Canterbury were in some strife with Des, their roster/salary cap position and on field performance. Not sure what planet he was on. Quite clearly he was poorly advised and should ditch that manager if his.

Asked if Cleary had been appointed sooner would it have convinced him to stay at the Tigers, the Bulldogs-bound Woods said: "Probably, you know.

So clearly, the decision was made some time ago and you felt the need to drag it out?

The one thing from that article that stands out is that he was given very poor advice from well before he left and he wasnt smart enough to realise the consequences of taking it.
Karma is a [This word has been automatically removed] Aaron hope sge holds your hand from 2018 for 4 years .Do yourself a favour and get a decent manager and when you are due to get another contract in 4 years he may actually do something to benefit you and not just themselves
