Woods to Manly

@madunit said:
there was a rumour last week that Souths were going to make a play for Woods if Sam Burgess leaves (which apparently Sam has now switched to England RU to try and play in the RU WC)

I read it was fafita they were going to try to get if burgess left not woods

Wood's signature was always going to be expensive and hard to get, he is young, got a massive motor and a good style of kid, that with a little luck on the injury front, he will be at the top of the tree for another decade. Having heavy weights like Manly and Souths in the market place will not make it any easier. In saying all that Iam confident we are still the front runners. My big fear is Manly making a big charge at both Woods and the Siro brothers, not so worried about Souths

I could not see either Siro brother going anywhere. Ties to the club are far too great.
Woods I'm not going to guarantee but I highly highly doubt he will leave.

Manly Sea Eagles' NRL salary cap issues could mean Glenn Stewart exit

Posted Thu 6 Feb 2014, 6:32pm AEDT

Manly has a battle on its hands to retain superstar back-rower Glenn Stewart as the club moves to review its salary cap position in coming weeks.

An integral part of Manly's success during the past decade, along with his brother Brett, Stewart is off contract at season's end and has been linked to a big-money move to Canberra.

Sea Eagles general manager David Perry will lead a review of the club's playing roster in the lead-up to the 2014 season, but Manly appears increasingly resigned to losing Stewart.

"At this stage, we need to review all of our options," Perry said.

"We would love to keep every player at the club. Clearly, the Stewart brothers have been an integral part of our success and we would love to keep them here for the rest of their careers.

"But we have a cap we have to manage and we are going to review that in the next few weeks and determine an outcome and be as transparent as we can when that happens.

"It would be ideal to have both of them to finish up at Manly, but unfortunately with salary cap pressure and the reality of maintaining and managing that appropriately, you need to review all of that."

Brett, 28, and Glenn, 30, are entering their 11th seasons at Brookvale and could conceivably fall under long-term dispensation in the salary cap.

NRL head of football Todd Greenberg has flagged a comprehensive review of the salary cap and long-time auditor Ian Schubert has stepped down in a sign there will be sweeping change.

Sydney Roosters skipper Anthony Minichiello has been vocal in his support of greater allowances for one-club players.

But whether any of that will keep Glenn Stewart at Brookvale remains to be seen.

"We just wanted to get through the off-season and review our salary cap position and our recruitment strategy, which we are doing in the next couple of weeks," Perry said.

"In that, no doubt we will discuss all players and who is on and off contract.

"We will resolve that in due course."

A lot will depend on how we perform this year , players wont stay at a club that runs down the bottom , we wont this year so i say Woodsy will stay , sirro boys no chance of a move , tigers top 6

PRIME TARGET
>
MANLY have enjoyed a little-known advantage in their bid to prise Aaron Woods from Wests Tigers: the prop was raised as a fanatical Sea Eagles fan. Woods also owns a property on the northern beaches, making him a prime target to replenish Manly's front-row stocks after the departure of so many experienced bookends last year.

Wests are painfully aware of the affection Woods has for Manly, and have made his retention priority No. 1 before the season kicks off. Tigers CEO Grant Mayer met with Woods' agent this week and is very confident of finalising an extension soon. Our mail also suggests Woods will stay put, with Manly hard-pressed to raise the $600,000-a-season asking price because of their tight salary cap situation.

If G Stewart goes, they will have plenty of cash to throw at Woods

Surely Stewart would only go as they can't afford to keep him. If this is the case why would they then have enough for Woods?

$600k a season…. I dont think so....

To put it into perspective.

We offered benji 700k for this year.

And there is talk about woods being offered 600k next year?

A half compared to a front rower….Not too sure about this?

Never say never, although I do agree the Siro boys are unlikely to make a move to Brookvale, it still could happen, nothing is impossible. Fulton and Siro snr are very close friends and with Siro snr still heavily aligned to the Balmain side of the JV, that at present is in survival mode at best, anything is possible.

It would not suprise if Manly starts clearing out some big contracts and starts laying the foundations for the next decade by trying to signing some of the best young talent and we are the club that has plenty of that.

My thoughts are not based on any fact, just their is a very strong family connection, Manly have had a winning culture for decades and they seem to be able to attract players without much trouble, maybe the sea change thing.

He has a decent strike rate prob about 75%…

It was prob all just a beat up to drive up his asking price...

Good player management

From the people I have spoken to, he is rediculously over paid and Manly don't want him anyway.

They would be moving an older player and would free up plenty of cash. Hasler had him heavily backloaded so that he has earnt a fortune over the past two years.

well i hope the tigers get his signature very soon. i see him as a…for want of a non american term, "franchise player" for wests.

(hypocritically!) speaking of which, anyone else get annoyed that we are now always seeing the phrase "Woods INKS new deal..."? very american....

Manly need to throw more cash at DCE who is being chased hard by the Broncos BUT there's nothing stopping them from resorting to those trusted old brown paper bags that are found being passed under the table. If teams like Manly and the Roosters want a player, they have this uncanny ability to get who they want and stay under the cap.

Weird.
