LIVE GAME Trial 1 v Manly

Live Game Discussion
Di

Dillon had a few nice moments in a trial. I’ll agree he looks a bit of a prospect. Laurie had a very consistent season as an NRL first grader and took out the best player award. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
Brooks got that gong.

I don't know mate but he has been training in that position to cover Asu and Roberts.
I'd like to see for the next trial
Lock Peachy
½ Brooks
⅝ Hastings
LC Gildart
RC To'a
LW Maumalo
RW Noffa
F/B Laurie
Swap Brooks and Hastings I reckon.
Just tell Brooks his only job is to run and pass. He is an elusive runner, use that to good effect and leave to things that require nous to Hastings.

I'm sorry mate but I disagree with practically everything you've said unless your referring purely to the second half of young untested players getting a run.
Firstly our forwards in the 'main game' didn't leak up the middle and we had little trouble getting from our end to the the other end.
As far as attack goes we were good for our first hit out and should've been leading at the break.
The ref had an up and down game but allowed Manly's forward to lay all over us slowing the play the ball and the obstruction rule no try was unfair.
I've watched the game 3 times mate so yeh, I think your wrong.
All cool bro .. it's just I didn't see any improvement to our sides efforts to that of what we trotted out at the end of last season ..

I really hope we can click and have a decent crack this season, that's all .. !!

Are we on this forum so much better qualified to notice;
- Nofoaluma is targeted by the same play every time the call is on the right side, by every team in the NRL!
-our line speed is like tortoise, and trained by tortoise and snails!
- Our best forwards run 60 m max per game and frequently mimic turnstyles in defence, as they are paid for it!

Knowledge of a former first grader 🔥🔥🔥

Luke Brooks is better than Tyson Gamble tho.

Pauga was much more aggressive in attack. Loved it. Hope he continues to build on it for the Magpies
He was aggressive in defence also, his positioning let him down at times but he really was trying to hurt people out there. If he could get his footy IQ up or play in a better system he could be a tough customer for opponents

It amazes me the amount of people who are satisfied with Laurie’s game. He needs to lift.

Like all the people who say he's quick...
He's a solid player, But he's just out there doing a job.
Doesn't seem to be trying to make a difference to me, He's Mbye on much less money.

He's in one of the most important positions in the side, He needs to run hot... 100% of the time.

To put it in perspective, I don't think Gutherson is far outside the top 6 Fullbacks in the game, But I think Laurie is far more skillful than Gutho... and it's not close.

Put Gutho's ticker with Lauries Skill Set, Then we're talking....

Yeh sorry if I appeared blunt. I think we all had huge expectations from what appeared to be a long drawn out preseason and felt let down.
We have to put it into perspective though and analyse it carefully when we're going to be critical.
Last year as you know we were terrible through the middle but it seems we have addressed that.
Manly didn't bust us 'up the guts' as they say and that could be attributed to the Cayless effect.
Potentially we have more strike power in attack than last year.
If we don't put in a good performance against the Storm then I'll be really peeved.
👍

Pound for pound I think in his first year at FB Laurie did a great job. Brave under the high ball, regularly saw him put his body on the line in D with no favours from the blokes in front of him. Plenty of room for improvement but not an easy position to shine in, in a team like ours.

I

I might be getting old, I seriously saw more in Dillon in 30 minutes than I've seen in Laurie in a season... Having Logan right up his clacker might get Laurie to sharpen up some...

Dillon did some stupid things, But his urgency with the Ball was really good... Whenever he had it, I thought there was a chance of something happening. Seems to have a solid pass, great feet and a bit of strength.... Will be better for the run.

I've already messages from mates who support other clubs asking me "who's the hell is this kid"

Dillon held up ok after a shaky start which showed some character for mind. But to say Dillon showed more in 30mins than Laurie all season I don't get how you can make that assessment in a trial game.

People forget that Laurie was a rookie this time last year and had maybe 2-3 weeks before the 1st trial game with our squad, was chucked into fullback not his Panthers playing position without a pre-season & behind a team that was hopeless. Laurie attacked the ball, was safe under the high ball taking some fair dinkum spectacular bombs in traffic against players twice the size of him, put his body on the line in defence & made try savers, was the only player supporting around the forwards whilst chiming into a half backline that was changing all the time.

I think alot of people forget how Laurie was because he missed the backend of the season & have a bad taste due to the GF fiasco. But Laurie had a cracker of a rookie year.

Logan will be a good backup but can't let that high ball bounce like he did a couple of times against Manly. An exceptional talent, both if them!

I liked what I saw & he will get better playing the faster game but he had alot of work to do - he hasn't played with the big boys yet so the more experience he gets the better he will become.
But from 30mins of gametime:
High ball bounce
Wasn't close to covering when Turbo broke through
Didn't move across the line when we had 1 player down
His passing game was behind, he juggled 2 balls received which slowed his momentum
Personally didn't see enough to suggest he is NRL ready yet, where as Laurie came out of the gates blazing.

What's with the narrative that Laurie suddenly doesn't try hard enough on the field? Seemingly ever since that photo of him in a panthers jersey it's started coming up....

Tries his guts out every single week, smallest bloke on the field and plays tougher than almost everyone we've got. He's one of our best prospects!

People are forgetting it was his first full year of first grade because he's already playing like a proper first grader

How much footy has the guy had in the last 12 months? Fundamental errors I agree but some slack can be given in this first hit out surely.
