Wests Recruitment/Retention Failures

How do you measure a dud signing though? Can you compare Packer and Ballin? One was on almost 750 a year, the other peanuts.
Well, I used to think about this a lot more when I was more passionate about the club and looked at the storms recruitment as a guide.

Age is probably the biggest factor I think. Taking into consideration their career trajectories. Usually you want to get them around 21-23 years and once players reach end of their 20s it’s generally a “dud” signing as they have generally peaked. Pretty simple I guess

Paul bloody Momirovski has to be one of the biggest retention failures of Madge's tenure. Came to us from the 2018 Roosters premiership winning team, played a reliable brand of footy, was our goal kicker and really tightened up our defense out wide. Was swapped to the Storm for Harry Grant and won a premiership with them, in 2021 we traded him to the Panthers for Dane Laurie and he won another premiership with them before signing with the Roosters for this year.
Why is it that premiership contenders rate this bloke, and rate him heavily and we didn't know what to do with him? The centres have been an absolute joke since he left and still are, and to top it off we are so shallow, we even had to resign JTJ after we had already let him go as a dud. Way to go lads, so typically West Tigers that's why we have threads like this one.

Respectfully I have to disagree, yes he came from the Roosters that won that year but when he was with us you can see that he struggled too, his goal kicking wasn’t that good it might have improved since then but at the time it was bad after all he missed a easy kick that would have given us the win against the Bulldogs but the reason Paul looked better at Storm and Panthers was because of the talent around him if he was at another struggling club he wouldn’t have shined there like he didn’t with us, realistically nothing really special about him plus from what I’ve heard him and Madge didn’t get along don’t know if that’s true or not but you cannot keep players that don’t get along with the coach it creates a bad environment

Joey and the Jet were a bigger priority!

Momirovski confirmed he asked the Tigers for a release on more than one occasion over the summer when it became clear he was unlikely to start. Joey Leilua and James Roberts are expected to be the club’s starting centres

Pascoe and Co have a lot to answer for.

JAC and TPJ should be in our colours this season.

Imaging the other players that they would be attracting

Imaging he picks up another with the Roosters

He will be a legend

Not saying Momirovski is a star but if he was at the Tigers he would be first centre chosen for round 1. He can also fill in at fullback and on the wing and is only ever a back up kicker. From memory he was only kicking against the Bulldogs because Mbye got injured. The kick he missed was to tie the game and go to golden point.

I think there comes a point when so many players don't get on with the coach that the problem may be the coach

TPJ I reckon is because of Hartigan not doing his job properly there was a lot of back and forth when he was in charge you can see since Sheens got here the difference we are making already in terms of recruitment even if 22 is a shit year

As for JAC he felt unwanted by us, since we refused to give up Talau or Nofa for him he would have thought that we weren’t 100% invested in him so when Bulldogs came knocking he answered so that’s why we didn’t get him but honestly after seeing his performance in the all stars game at this stage he might not shine like he did at the Storm

Maybe it was for golden point I can’t remember, yes he did fill in at fullback and wing at times but like I said earlier when he was with us you can see he didn’t shine because he’s not a standout, the players around him at Roosters, Storm and Panthers is what made him look good, but if we don’t make the 8 this year I can’t see Madge coaching us for 23 but unless after like 10 rounds we’re 2-10 or something like that I don’t think he’ll be sacked mid season

It's actually a really interesting one.
Normally you trade out a player for something better.
Grant was an instant hit and no doubts we win more with him in the team than Momos that year.

The Laurie shift was the mistake. We had Laurie already signed & sealed getting him a year early bonus was to get him NRL experience and also build combinations across the park earlier. But at the sametime center depth was ordinary but it was clear we banked on BJ, Talau and Api over him. JTJ came after he left. At the sametime he may of said he had zero intent on extending past last year if so then why keep him around. I do think he would be better than what we have & be the 1st center picked week in week out but if he didn't want to be here then makes sense to get Laurie over a year before.

Proof is in the pudding. I don't think there is much value debating or comparing the recruitment plans and fortunes of WT with a new Brisbane-based franchise.

It may be that Dolphins put together a very competitive side, or it may be they struggle for many seasons to be competitive and stay relevant. History is unfortunately not on the positive side of the ledger, because most new teams struggle for a very significant period of time, and often collapse.

I am hopeful that modern governance and NRL financing will keep new teams afloat for long enough to develop their own competitive culture and history, but Dolphins have a very long and complicated road ahead of them, that is almost entirely not comparable to where the Wests Tigers are up to now, though we did experience a rebirth ourselves 23 years ago.
