That's contentious, as he was basically a Putin puppet . Similarly with his contemporary in neighbouring Belarus, who from reporting on the ground had forces alongside the Russian troops that crossed into Ukraine north of Kyiv.

Personally I don't believe in forcing people to submit via force is cool but that is how the right rolls now. It's not pro-freedom or pro-democracy. It's pro autocratic dictators who use force to further their childish ambitions.

20/40, many years ago when I was in the military we used to get security briefs on world political and military situations and this was forecasted well before Ukrainian independence.
You would be surprised by how many billions of dollars Putin has at his disposal to spend on weapons.
As I said before, there are parts of his country that lack the basic necessities of living.

On foreign policy, current western leadership, not just in Washington but in Europe too, is the most disastrous since at least the First World War. It's an absolute train wreck.

I read that article that Stan Grant wrote. It was good but this isn't about identity politics or woke politics in the US. My take is anyone complaining about woke politics is like the princess complaining about the pea under her bed. Are you stating that Morrison's religious bill is what caused Putin to invade. To me that is a non-sensical argument. It also avoids the point that no one wants to go to war. To be fair to that article identity politics was also mentioned as one tiny subjective point that Putin may think is weak about the west. It was not a big issue at all.

Putin has been in power for over two decades - he might have felt able to go after a tiny country like Georgia in the past but it's only now he feels he can go after a country the size of Ukraine, and that is because he feels the West at present is weak, and they are proving his point. Rightly or wrongly there is no longer any real sense of common national purpose or history, of unity, of service, or of willingness to sacrifice, in most western countries - and the cult of identity politics played a big part in arriving at this point. Leaders like Putin or Jinping feel like they have nothing to fear from such societies and they are now free to act as they please.

You'll find re that incident Putin quickly bought Erdogen to heel by installing S 400 systems and warning Turkey that in future Turkish jets will be bought down even inside Turkish airspace if they threaten Russian assets and put Erdogen in his place re Syria.

Turkey was so impressed with S400 systems they decided to acquire 2 from Russia.

Turkey routinely threatens it's neighbors with air force overflights and other rhetoric.

Both sides needed to concede something. The U.S. actually didn't want to concede anything they tried to stand up to him and it didn't end well.

I disagree the US tried to stand up to him. They publicly ruled out military support for Ukraine as an option well in advance. That was mind-bogglingly inept. Even if you don't plan on providing military support, you don't come out and publicly say it - you try to leave some doubt in the mind of your adversary. Then they raised the spectre of SWIFT only to then back down. They couldn't look weaker if they tried.

Diplomatically they stood up to him by not conceding anything or offering continuing diplomacy based on Russian red lines. I think it was a mistake. Both the US and Russia needed to concede something and the US didn't try
