I think China has a very different strategy.
Leave Asia alone, and we don't care about your problems.

I doubt China will directly help Russia, nor condone Russia. While Russia may endorse a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, China so far hasn't endorsed Russia's action in the Ukraine.

China is trying to remain neutral to keep up trading partnerships and international friendships. It is only openly hostile to those countries that are openly hostile to it. Or people who (rightly) mention the gross human rights abuses going on in China.

Taiwan will be watching what has happened in the Ukraine. They will rightly have zero confidence in trade sanctions stopping or deterring a Chinese advance. I expect Taiwan to make alliances with South Korea and Japan, but we will see what these alliances mean when push comes to shove.

If you are talking harm, then Joseph Stiglitz makes a really good case that the IMF pushed capitalism on Russia way too fast. People could not adapt and you just get Robber barrons making lots of money.
many of the Russian factories were brought for steel value only. i.e. factory was sold dirt cheap by a dodgy auction and the winner fired everyone and took all the equipment to the steel works. Hence you get Putin running the place.

Same idea as 1962 during the Cuban Missle Crises.
Again the cia plotted the BoP ( Operation Northwoods) which was a failure and poor jack had to cop the flack from Dulles and his cia goons (same as the Ukrainian situation now) then Bobby and Jack had to risk total nuclear war with Russia because Russia was defending Cuba.

The military (military industrial complex) were pushing for war with Cuba/ Russia but thank God Bobby saved half the world with his diplomacy. Also credit to the Russian side in Dobryn and Kruschev.

As a last resort I wouldn't count it out ( if it was that or governmental collapse I wouldn't count anything out with Putin). But I'd say it's a bottom of the barrel thing. I doubt even Putin would want it.
