Lui had a great short pass and a good kicking game. He could get us into field position so Benji and Farah could do their thing. That is something brooks lacks and has been our problem for years. While brooks wears the 7 we will not make the 8.

I had Rob Lui turn up at my townhouse unannounced one day before he played grade he was with a friend of my now sister in law. I’ll always remember he thought it was the best place ever ( in reality it was a shit hole) 🤣 he was a decent enough kid back then always hoped he would kick on with us but what happened happened.

I don't know his back ground extensively but pretty sure he comes from middle of nowhere somewhere in Australia.

Would of been a great story, didn't follow him in UK but think he did well for himself over there.

I honestly never saw the worship around Cam Smith. Spent his while career under Bellyache surrounded by some of the best players in the game (Cronk, Slater, plus all their monster forwards) and Robbie's stats per game consistently beat Smith's.

Longevity and leadership is definitely a factor and I think a healthy dose of media and NRL bias (diamond ring for the missus), but just watching him play for over a decade I would not put him up there with the Immortals. Hall of fame, sure, but Immortal, no way.

If he had played in a team with an average coach and the average players around him, I think he would have still been good but not as lauded as he is. Plus there's plenty of dodgy stuff he's been involved with that his supporters seem to turn a blind eye on. He's like the Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon of the NRL. 😉

I heard Wayne Bennett talking about hookers once. He said most first grade coaches want a hooker that can follow instructions and tackle. He named Smith, Cook, Korisau and Manase Fainu as exceptional because a coach could trust them to make their own decisions as to what was in front of them and that is a game changing skill.
I guess the same applies to halfbacks. There's not too many like JT, Cleary, Adam Reynolds, Cooper Cronk. They seem to be able to make stars of the players around them.
If you have a rep quality hooker or halfback, preferably both, you're a long way to winning the comp.
