Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Benji and Robbie were inconsistent players that weren't good enough to lead teams to consistent success with the players they had around them. Sure they were great players but they weren't in the same league as players like Johns or Cameron Smith.

You need to have a really good squad and you need to execute consistently well over the course of the season but especially in the finals series. You also need luck with injuries.

Singling out any specific player as being the problem to me comes across as being way too simplistic.
I honestly never saw the worship around Cam Smith. Spent his while career under Bellyache surrounded by some of the best players in the game (Cronk, Slater, plus all their monster forwards) and Robbie's stats per game consistently beat Smith's.

Longevity and leadership is definitely a factor and I think a healthy dose of media and NRL bias (diamond ring for the missus), but just watching him play for over a decade I would not put him up there with the Immortals. Hall of fame, sure, but Immortal, no way.

If he had played in a team with an average coach and the average players around him, I think he would have still been good but not as lauded as he is. Plus there's plenty of dodgy stuff he's been involved with that his supporters seem to turn a blind eye on. He's like the Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon of the NRL. 😉

Anyway, just wanted to get that off my chest. Rant over.

Lui had superb hands, spatial awareness and also a tremendous pass. He was very strong and quick over the first few metres. There is a highlights reel putting I believe Eillis into space on the right hand side of the field. It was an amazing ball. He was a special talent and it is very sad how his career ended in the NRL.

Anyone ever know what happened to BonstonkersTigers?

Imagine the Tigers had back rowers like Tallis and Carrol....
Or centres like Matai.
Crippling blokes that tried to take our edges.

Imagine we had an edge player like Luke Lewis the night he just terrorised Thurston....

..... Imagine!!
That’s why we don’t play finals football. Lack of real quality in the backrow has been a major issue for a long time and I guess since Lawrence got injured you could say the same about the centre position

Robert Lui was a typical Tigers playmaker, hot and cold. For some reason, in the big matches he was pretty consistent and often very good, but would go missing every second week in the home and away stuff. Of course he was not Robinson Crusoe

Robert issues were more off field.

Hard to explain but on field he was the missing link since Prince. Things just clicked when he was there. Knew when to run, pass kick ect, would of been a great player if had his off field stuff sorted

Sheens at the same time called him the best ball player he’d ever seen.

I had Rob Lui turn up at my townhouse unannounced one day before he played grade he was with a friend of my now sister in law. I’ll always remember he thought it was the best place ever ( in reality it was a shit hole) 🤣 he was a decent enough kid back then always hoped he would kick on with us but what happened happened.

How many years did we have Benji and Robbie. They only made the finals when a decent halfback was between them. They couldn’t do it by themselves.
Not to mention a target in Ellis at the heights of his game that constantly drew plenty of attention, which in turn created space and options for the front three of the spine each and every time he was near the play.

Maybe not at Turbo levels, but nonetheless a rare individual that so positively impacts the ability of players around them to perform.

I disagree. 2 or 3 spoons in a row would be much worse. Change for the sake of change is not a direction I’d like to see.

In the right team Brooks is more than capable. Until there is a better option I’d like to see us upgrade the players around him. We still have 5 or 6 players that wouldn’t get a start at too many other clubs. It’s much easier to find a couple of decent props, back towers and centres than it is a halfback.
I was referring to the fact that if we had of come last a few times we would have been more open to change and maybe been successful a lot quicker. Maybe.

Did we end up getting rid of him because of the off field nonsense or was it because Sheens got the ass?
Released after 2011 season after being charged with assaulting his partner to which he plead guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
He was also charged with assaulting her after the 2010 season
