Let's look at the numbers:
Storm missed 4 goals including 2 very easy penalties - they should've scored 30pts which is right on average to last year average points scored.
We had 10% more possession, made 35 more hitups & 200 more meters. The 2nd half completion rate was sitting around 60% for most of the half due to dumb mistakes, bad roster management leading to fatigue. Most of the ball was within the 30-30 zones granted but we didn't even look like creating a line break.
Now to rub salt more into how ineffective we are with the ball.
* For the 1st 50mins we had over 60% of possession, at one point it was above 65%.
* We had the fastest play the ball speed of any team so far this round by nearly half a second for the full game, it was faster when during 1st 40mins.
* We had nearly double the offloads to the Storm
* We made more than 80 passes in general play
* We had managed to get a goal line dropout.
* We could only get 2 line breaks, both of which aren't general play breaks they were in the process of scoring out wide.
We didn't create 1 line break in general play in 80mins of football, didn't come close.
We had a better tackle effectiveness, missed less tackles & had only 13 ineffective tackles
We restricted the Storm to less offloads and in play passes.
The Storm did however have the 2nd fastest play the ball speed so far this season.
Despite that the Storm made 5 line breaks, scored 5 tries.
Our bench rotation is questionable. Garner got 10mins at the end & we finished the game with a rotation left. Simpkin needed a break sooner, Kelma was getting gassed and slower line recovery speed during the last 5-8mins of the 1st half, 2nd half he started to fade about the 55th minute mark.
The game was fast, both teams play the balls was quicker than any other NRL game so far. This is a good sign for us, last year we were one of the slowest.
We showed more intent in the forwards with ruck speed, our play width and defensive structures in general was under control. We had one of the cleanest games defensive wise on statistics. Cayless has clearly been working the forwards will be interested to see if we can maintain and grow with this.
Simpkin provides great ball service & our play the ball speed slowed by over half a second when he was off - but defensive wise struggles, 4 missed tackles, 2 ineffective and 3 penalties in 60mins of which 3 tries came off the back of. Storm in the 2nd half targeted him.
Brooks made 29 tackles (Joe was the only one who made more with 30), now let's compare him with Hughes who made 18 missed 3 and had 5 ineffective tackles. Hastings on the other side only had to make 10 tackles. The Storm kept hammering Brooks edge to break it down over time which they did. Brooks needs help from his inside men to prevent teams running at him all the time. We haven't changed tactics to reduce his workload. With the ball he touched the ball as often as Simpkin - 64 touches (Hughes 40, Hastings 56), his work rate was brilliant the issue is he is asked to do too much as such cannot be effective.
Gildart is a big risk for me defensively coming from the ESL and his size was something I was concerned about. His 1st NRL game didn't ease those concerns. 8 tackles, 2 missed and 2 ineffective is the worst defensive stat line of the night at 66.67%.
The 2nd half blowout was the cause of mistakes & defensive breakdowns. We had a 10% shift in completing our sets during the time the Storm took control of the match. It was simple mistakes but those mistakes were actually a cause of defensive breakdowns by the Storm on key players (Gildart, Simpkin, Brooks, Kelma). Issue for me here is we had zero capability to pull the team together and toughen up to halt the run.
Look after watching the game a 2nd time after reviewing the stats I did see some promise but also saw enough to suggest same old same old. We ran out of speed with covering, ruck hold downs and forward coverage which could be a risk of how aggressive we went in the 1st 40mins. We just struggled once the Storm got on top and didn't know how to combat it which was similar to last year.
