However all through the Souths glory run of 2014 we were repeatedly reminded about how John Sattler played through a final with a broken jaw.
As soon as Sam copped that hit and as a viewer you can see the impact on it, the narrative was he will play on with it and was going to be the Clive Churchill medalist.
I’d say that decision to play on was on Sam as much as the coaching staff.

Ive seen it widely reported that Madge sent the message out that he had to stay on. REgardless it is the coach and coaching staff's responibility to keep a player safe and it doesnt matter what Sam says.

Sam staying on was tough, heroic, but it was stupid, dangerous and negligent on the part of Madge and the support staff. Everyone involved were very lucky, it could have turned out very badly.
 
Madge is doing a fine job. 🙂

Reminds me a little of Lenny Stacker circa 1983.
A couple of disappointing losses to start the year and then **BANG** a draw with Newtown and an upset of premiers Parra.

... of course Wests still got the spoon and Lenny was moved on at the end of the year, but there was the odd glass-half-full moment.

NRL360 host Paul Kent says the blame for the Tigers poor start to the season lays with the players and not under-pressure coach Michael Maguire.
Maguire’s future has come under scrutiny once again after narrowly avoiding the axe at the end of the last year and starting 2022 with back to back losses.
“How long has Madge got?” the Daily Telegraph’s Buzz Rothfield asked on NRL 360.
Kent didn’t hold back
“I don’t think Madge is the problem, it is the players, the players and I think the roster is terrible, it is out of shape, there is players there that are not Michael Maguire players, James Roberts has never been a Michael Maguire type player,” Kent said.
“He likes them tough and relentless, James Roberts has had to be conjoled his whole career, look he has got super talent but he has never fulfilled that.”
Kent said Maguire had been “disarmed” by the “soft” Tigers playing group.
“He can’t coach the way he wants to coach because he has to mollycoddle them. He has to keep the players on side because the minute he loses the dressing room he will be out because it’s cheaper to sack the coach than it is to sack the players.
“He’s been disarmed as the coach. He can’t get in and do it the way he wants it to be done because it’s so fragile there at the moment.
“He’s trying to nurse everything through and it’s not working”.
Despite being under pressure, Rothfield detailed a call he had with Tigers football boss Tim Sheens dispelled any rumours of Maguire’s departure.
“Tim wouldn’t have a bar of being critical of anyone, he threw his full support behind the playing group and his full support behind Michael Maguire,” Rothfield said.
“He wants to be patient, he said there will not be a knee-jerk reaction at the Tigers and he wants to give him more time.”
“The concern though is you are getting down on effort and energy in Round 2, you can have a mental week off after Round 10 or 11, you get through that Origin period.... but it is Round 2 and they haven’t turned up,” Kent said.

While the Tigers have some talented players within their ranks, Braith Anasta wondered if their salary cap is the issue, leaving Maguire with a playing group simply not good enough to compete in the competition.
“They have always paid overs for players who haven’t delivered, did he pay the price with the roster he has taken on or has he just not achieved,” Anasta asked.
“There was an epic hangover when Ivan Cleary upped and left them to go back to the Panthers because he had signed a variety of different players on long-term contracts big money, and it bit them on the arse,” Fox League’s James Hooper replied.
Rothfield, however, said the Tigers will need to make a call in a month.
“In a month’s time they need to make a decison the Wests Tigers.
“There’s two old hard coaches out there without a job. I’m talking Shane Flanagan, premiership-winning coach and Paul Green, premiership-winning coach.
“They are tough men and I think the Tigers need tough love.”

I didn't watch 360 because I cant handle that mob.
Kent is on the money. How is he supposed to coach with new players and a threat of being sacked going to work.
He's in a damned if does and damned if he doesn't situation.
With the new players coming in it was always going to be difficult to coach under these circumstances.
As I keep saying, players have to play football, do what they are getting paid thousands of dollars to do.

Obviously not shooting the messenger @Geo . Thanks for posting.
If the roster is out of shape then you would think the 4th year coach may have some responsibility for that.
We keep turning over players and coaching staff (assistants) but the results stay the same. All overseen by a CEO who would be getting close to one of the longest serving staff in the club.

I guess the best and most truthful part of the whole article was Anasta finally admitting he was overpaid and didn't deliver.
 
It would be almost impossible for any NRL coach to be able to focus on his job with so much relentless scrutiny from the media.

And the only way this scrutiny can be eased is if the players start listening to their coach and perform as expected but instead the coach is not only dealing with the media but he's also forced to " mollycoddle" the players?

I think one of the big reasons for this weak attitude by the players is because they know that their spot in the team is safe and that's because there's not much threat coming from the reserves players to take their spot that would force the NRL players to be more focused and try playing that little bit harder.

This is probably why we see them switching off the game after about 40-50mins, and the reason why Madge has been repeatedly saying we need to do it for the full 80mins.
 
This is a real sea saw conversation.

One hand wants Madge gone, other hand I just don't see how anyone would be better from the options out and about.

Madge hasn't delivered anything but down trend results
The alternate options aren't great - Flanno same as Madge, Morris would get eaten alive, Gardiner isn't ready and Ciraldo won't come here.

Only Ciraldo potentially would attract players the rest will struggle, but no way he comes here to start his career on a total rebuild and a job that has killed every coach but 1 who jumped career. That's not something a rookie takes on.

We have 7 forward starting/rotation spots up for grabs next year and filled 2 so far, we have a heap of cap space & we need a makeover within the backline. Hoping that kids will save the day is a long way off. Our Reserves have no major shining light, the Flegg boys are years off as well.

Right now for any coach we have become a blank canvas, huge opportunity but blank canvases with teams in the past have hardly ever been a success.

Our pain is going to be around for a while.

Demps, when I saw "upgrades", I knew it would go well in a poem with "Peptides".
They nearly rhyme, for God's sake.
Surely there's a poet here that can bring this to life ?
 
This issue can't actually be resolved by Madge, or by the players.

This needs to come from Sheens, or if he's unable to do so, from the CEO.

There are no in-betweens anymore. Either the management side with the players or they side with the coach.

Given the last few times they've sided with the players and seen the results, I hope that they look at the alternatives.
 
Paul Kent's claim that the roster isn't Madge's is complete stupidity. the bloke has been here since November 2018. every single player that has been signed or retained has happened under his watch. yes Cleary put us back a couple years but that is well and truly in the past. Madge has gotten the side he wanted and this is what he has to show for it.

Not sure any coach has got the players they wanted at this club. Like all those before him he got to pick from what was left from players moved on from clubs where they were surplus to requirements.

I despise Ivan Cleary with every bone in my body, but if you gave him our current crop we'd possess far more direction in both attack and defence.

Also the talk amongst a lot of us,calling for a new coach is understandable, but looking at the teams history,with another new coach, the team still underperforms, the coach is sacked ,when the new coach comes they still perform the same way ,something is not right at the club, just my thoughts anyway!

Exactly right. Madge has been here for a couple of years now and there's been no signs to suggest we are heading somewhere great. Look Madge might be a great coach but it's clearly not working here. Has anyone in this club got the plums to make the call tho?

Last year when the club did the review, I was all for punting him for the reasons you give here, and at the time there were viable options available (Bennett and others). When they committed to him, Iwas back on board with Madge and the moves the club was making (Sheens appointment, some good signings etc) and I always expected this year to be a transition to a better 2023........but Im done now, I just cant see what Madge is doing. Nothing is changing.

It does seem to be that the club is making some good moves, but Madge isnt the one to get it done.....but I also dont think the available options are better other than Wolfe who is completely untested.
