There have been reports Brooks is on 900k to a million next year.

That would mean we are paying around $600k for Brooks to play for Dogs plus $800k for Luke Thompson. - not sure even we could screw the cap that bad

Why would McDonnell have a say in team selection for first grade? I'd say he'd have zero input into that.

In top form I think he is our best fullback but he is miles off that level at that moment. Would Doueihi have missed that bomb ? How many players don't score off the Brooks kick if they are where Laurie was ?

He needs to go this week and get his form back in reserves.

I'm fine if he gets picked this week and then comes out and he plays to his ability but I wouldn't take that risk if I was selecting the team.

This is the great trope of Rugby League; that a certain position needs to be a certain type of player.

A five-eighth doesn't need to be quick and elusive, he could be big and strong, or slippery, or an organiser, or a run-first player, or a skilful backrower-type, or whatever...

Provided a team plays to their strengths, with a game plan to suit, any number of body types or skillsets can work in just about any position.

Cam Murray works as a 13. NAS works as a 13.
Cam Smith worked as a 9. Robbie worked as a 9. Damien Cook works as a 9.

All these players are built different and play different.

AD can be a great five-eighth in my opinion and is best suited there. But equally, he could be a great centre. It depends on the strengths and needs of the team and how he's used.

We do need to attract players & last few months we have done that somewhat - The issue is bigger than Madge over the last 2-3yrs and has been more off field than on it.

Sheens has come in and we are spending money all of a sudden.

I do think we went after the wrong type of big name players that would've been same old same old which put us back a long way had they joined. Mitchell & JAC wouldn't have brought any big names with them & I just don't see without a bunch of support how they would've been effective here (JAC has been ordinary at the Bulldogs this year).

Knowing Madge will be coach in the off season we signed arguably the best backrower & hooker in the comp (Papa & Api) & extended one of the best young props in Stefano.

Yes the last 3-4yrs have been absolutely shocking but in the recruitment stakes pending major injuries we are recruiting the right players in the right positions for a change.

We also have invested alot in the Flegg age pool (so 2-3yr benefit) which ties into Sheens plans to compete in the next 3yrs. I don't think Ceraldo, Woolf or Flannagan could've attracted bigger names than Papa, Api and Stefano for us in the last 3mths ready for next year.

It also comes down to him actually getting a fair run in a position and not moved around.
He clearly has talent, passion and takes accountability.
 
Dare I write it but another issue surely a club like ours must look at is durability. How many games is a player actually on the field per season? If you are on a good contract of say $500k and above, all intents an purposes you should be out there as much as possible.

How about this for context... Nofa won winger of the year in 2020. 2021 (last year) would've come near the bottom, this year will struggle to figure a point on current form - he hasn't been injured during that time.

AD is a quality player for us but got points playing various positions across the park, he missed pre-season and is out for half this year. AD won't figure in the Dally M voting standings this year so his result last year will now mean squat.

Point is I wouldn't be using Dally M to justify an argument for a Wests Tigers player as history often says they decline very quickly after getting a good rating.

Yep it should be a big consideration. Not much you can do to predict how a player will fare with injury after they've signed though. Luck of the draw most times, but yep, stay away from signing blokes who have an injury history.

Fair call, but hard to plan for. Look at the 2021 Roosters.
 
A straight swap Brooks for Thompson I would pay give or take whatever difference there would be in their salaries. But Bulldogs only having to pay 300k of Brook's contract while I assume we take on all of Thompsons would be insanity.

Only way we should consider that is if the dogs are doing the same for Thompson, so it ends up we're both just paying for each others players.
