Who Would Make It

I think the better question is what other clubs would make the signings we have over the last few years, excluding Api and Papi. The only ones are Stef and Maulmalo. Gildart, Peachy, Laurie etc aren’t players who other clubs would lose over missing out on. And the only reason we had to resort to signing those types is cos we missed out on the signings those other clubs made.

Cobar it’s part of a longer term strategy built around a new team requiring a truck load of players. We run the team down over the last few years, making sure not to have star players we need to pay overs to retain. First off Bennet is looking for current maroons, then he’ll come looking for ex maroons. Other clubs have lost players and unbalanced their cap, while we remain safe and ready to pounce in 23/24.
Seriously, I think the spreading of top tier talent and the cost of saving them benefits us more than any other club.
Look back at 05 when we won the comp.
We had several top players, NZ, Aust, SOO and city/country reps and a sprinkling of talented players across the park that's why we won. It wasn't just Sheens or a great front office.
To your point about pouncing, I agree 👍
Why then in 15 years haven't we pounced.
We have recruited potential retirees and not had quality fit players.
When we do get a quality player we don't have enough of them to build on, coaches and players jump ship.
I often wonder when they say we lack culture, is it because we are not really a one club.
I'm an old Balmain boy but it infuriates me when Elias or Roach has a go at us as if they are the voice of the joint venture.
Our NSWRL team the Magpies makes the joint venture look unstable.
Our pathways all the way up should be Wests Tigers. [Could be wrong but that's the impression I get]
I hardly heard Tommy or some of the old Western Suburbs boys sledge the team as much as Elias.
It just seems that this stigma of being a shitfight of a club has been with us since the joint venture started and is hard to shrug off.
Something tells me if we had Sheens overseeing the football operations a long time ago and the board stepped back then I think we would be able to attract marquee players and make the playoffs.

I’m not sure we were overflowing with rep players in 2005. I know that some became reps later, but that’s another story.
If you were setting up a new nrl club you would do everything almost the opposite of what WT did or became.
The main reason for the joint venture was to keep each club in the game, and yet the public persona was always that they each didn’t want the other in the game.
The latest logo change has a more reduced and docile looking tiger which is now predominantly black and white. I think far too much focus and energy has been redirected to this bullshit. It was thought that a premiership in 2005 would bring it all together and serve as a reminder , we’re all on the same side, we all share a common goal, fighting the same fight, just like Don Quixote, we all dream the impossible dream.
It didn’t happen, we sack the guy who gave us the joy of a gf victory. Here we are , 17 years later trying to replicate the moment and make wiser choices.

To highlight how bad our roster and depth is, how many players in our current squad would make a new club.
The only Wests Tigers I would choose are Stefano and possibly AD.
That sound pretty dramatic but if you went through every position, there are better players out their.
In essence, apart from Stef, we do not have any marquee players.
Next year we get 2 in Kori and Papa, that will make 3 top players.
Practically every other club has us covered in this scenario.
The reason we are struggling atm is because of our poor roster imo.
Agree with Stefano of course. But AD -maybe if you could find his best position and get him on the field.

Great read mate.
In 05, we had a few reps;
Brett Hodgson SOO 2002
Marshal gf and kiwi test 2005
Halatau kiw test debut 2004
Paul Whatauira kiwis 2004,
Others city/country or quality players like Todd Payten, Robbie...the list goes on.
What I'm saying that a good side has to have a blend of rep type players and other players willing to bust their arse trying like Fulton, Lafranchi, Gibbs etc

I think everyone keeps forgetting this, myself included. But when you start comparing individual players across the league in other teams, we don't stack up.

This is the ultimate pub discussion. Fun to chat about but useless in reality.

It really depends on other teams. One team might be struggling for number 9s and need a Jacob Liddle. Another might have ball playing props but need someone like Twal to do the dirty work.

After running my eye over our roster, I think at least 13 could make a starting line-up elsewhere.

While this might sound high considering we're sitting last, you also need to consider that we're talking about a team sport. Having good players around you can make a big difference.

Stefano,
Douihei
And Bellamy would take Seyfarth in a heart beat.
Reckon Bellamy could do anything with Twal?

Not trying to be critical of Twal because I actually like the guy and he is a big strong body and to my way of thinking he should be able to develop an off load, make heaps of post contact metres, make a tackle that hurts someone and puts fear into the opposition or even play rep footy for someone other than Lebanon.

100% man.

Bellamy type of player.
Have him a beast in no time.
Once again, players like Seyfarth and Twal would probably improve at the Storm because they have several high profile players.
Bellamy has always had quality players to help other players develop to a higher standard.

That's just it isn't it? Your saying about thirteen of our players could make it at other clubs.
I'm saying they would if those clubs have marquee players or current players playing at a high standard. [which they have]
At the moment we dont have those players like Storm's Hughes and Bromwich brother to help set the std.

If you are coach or head of football, the questions might be.. 1.”which players have reached their peak?” 2. “Now that we have 2 distinctive groups.. is the peak acceptable?” “Can we extract peak performance from the underperformers? If not why not? “

Collectively the worst squad in the NRL by a long way but most of our players could get a run in other clubs and hold their own.
Eisenhuth labelled a plodder here by most no one gave a rat's when he left. Now hold's a his position in the most talented team in the comp.
The club he joined is full of the top quality footballers that's why.
