Mental Health Discussion

I'd recommend everyone watch the most recent face to face matty john episode talks to an ex Kiwi rugby union and league player who had developed mental health programs.

Spoke openly about his mental health issues and how he manages it. Says we should speak about mental illness way more openly.

Also speaks about how easily rugby league players can have mental health issues with all the pressures that comes with the game.
Reminder to fans posting crap online it's just a game and the person mental health should come first.

Thoroughly enjoyed.
Sent it to a few people I know within community services industry for a watch.

Spoke some truths eh.

They chose a profession where their performance is viewed and scrutinised by millions. There are players in lower grades waiting for an opportunity if they aren’t up to scratch. It’s a cut throat profession. Obviously the criticism can be over the top sometimes and that’s not great but they can’t have their cake and eat it too. Plenty of jobs going on construction sites.

Having this sort of attitude only stigmatises mental health. It's what makes it harder for people to seek help.

With all due respect Lauren, the percentage of aspirants who actually make the NRL makes it an extremely unique environment. Performance is highly scrutinised in fairness to the next man up as much as anything. Do you not care about the mental health of the toiler who has played reserve grade for 7 years. He’s probably a higher suicide risk than anyone. The scrutiny is just a consequence of the competitive environment that is chosen.

I'm simply saying it's a poor outlook on player welfare and particularly mental health.

It's a game. I think their mental health should be paramount.

People choose to place importance on the nrl whether it be gambling or people have nothing else to do.

I’d hope the clubs are offering proper education to players as their career could be over a week after it starts. Not many jobs that cut throat.
Same and that's the only reason I responded. Was only emphasising the importance of addressing performance anxiety and other issues. Identifying stressors (in competitive sports) and nurturing this side of player development too.

You’re not looking at it wholistically. The guys in first grade don’t have a right to anything other than their next game. Perform or be replaced. It’s the nature of the beast.

Clubs should prepare players for that reality and that’s where I agree that mental health is paramount.

I think we agree. All I’m highlighting is the scrutiny will always be there.

Disagree.

What happens on game day the players can cop but all the shit on the internet

The hammering Brooks gets the messages that papz shared from abusive nrl fans. The nrl players and not the problem people are the problem. The NRL and the clubs should do more to protect the players really.

Where laws are broken the police should deal with it. Fans are passionate and without that the opportunity that players have to earn a living isn’t there. Thick skin is part of the gig.

Lauren,I can assure you the clubs have programs in place and people on hand to deal with player mental issues...
The youth have to be trained early on about the high salaries that can be earned and the pressure to perform that comes with it....
I can tell you that when I played,I had my share of people booing me,calling me a wog and other abuse while on the playing field,I also had some dicks abusing me at the club after the game which didnt worry me I just told them to go out and do what I do then I might take notice of them, these things were rare though...
Todays problems arise because of so much access to social media, its to easy to be a troll or keyboard warrior when no one can see them, this is the danger that all high profile sports people are open to,thats the area where it is the most dangerous,it only takes some type of abuse that can set someone onto the road of no return, suicide comes to mind....this in my opinion is what causes people the most grief....love to you Lauren..
