Let’s get the hierarchy correct.
Review was undertaken by designated group.
The report was tabled at the Board meeting for consideration.
The Board discussed it and agreed to extend.
Normal good business practice.
Board (which includes our CEO) is made up of some pretty successful business people so you can criticise all you want but like all Boards they make decisions and rely on quality of information and recommendation put in front of them.
So let’s not get carried away with wrist slashing commentary from the back of the stand, about any incompetence here.

The way I see it is when last years review decision was made to allow Madge to continue coaching there was always going to be this current review...an assessment on how things are going.
This was confirmed by Tim himself.
The media have once again jumped on this as a crisis meeting that's suddenly cropped up.
The bye round is perfect for this assessment to take place.
This meeting is not solely aimed at Madge, it's the whole club.
What the board had hoped was at this point of the season we were sitting on double digits thus giving us a shot at the top 8.
As I said earlier, on paper we have gone backwards if you look at last year where we won 5 of the first 13 games, this year it's 3 from the first 12 games heading into the bye.
I could go on with more but it's been said.
I think that because Tim is now overseeing football ops that he won't overlook that while we haven't had the results we have had terrible injuries, a backline that changes weekly, suspensions and indiscretions of the field.
Our defensive attitudes at times have been commendable, look at the wins against Souths and Parra. We haven't shown that sort of resolve, resilience for a long time.
Losses against Souths Rd12, Nth Qld Rd 10 and Cronulla Rd 5 have been forgettable performances whilst other games against Melbourne, Manly and Golf Coast to name a few were winnable.
During this review period they have to ascertain contract renewals/extentions to players like AD, Laurie and Jacko to name a few.
Sheens will be aware of how we are in a good cap position now [finally] to retain players like these as well as add to our improved roster for next year that Madge has been able to accomplish.
What I'm trying to say is this is not just a review on Madge.
The one thing I like about Madge is his determination to right the ship. To hang in there for the long haul where previous coaches have failed. He still believes he can turn the club around so lets give him the roster he deserves. [I love his passion]
This scenario reminds me of an English Channel swimmer who valiantly swims to a point half across the channel and so exhausted he decides to turn around and go back. 🤔 Makes no sense.
Vote 1 Madge, Gardiner,Cayless and Sheens
If they are going to do an honest review it must include all of the football dept,Madge, assistants, players and INJURIES to the top NRL team..
Lets face it if Madge gets sacked because of the results of the last 12 games, having half your NRL team on the sideline, the makeshift sides playing very well even though they have lost and chopping and changing players in positions to at least try and field a competative side even though the attitude and culture are improving dramatically, then this club will be destined for future failure because they havent learnt from their mistakes....good luck to Madge,he deserves to be treated with the respect he gives our team and club....

I am predicting there will be no recommendation to the Board to change coaches. Here are some pertinent points & questions regarding Madge's performance:

  • When Madge started with the Tigers, the roster, salary cap, culture, player leadership & perception from other Club's players was in a mess. There would be no short term solution.
  • Madge has always stated this would be a long-term campaign to build sustained success which over the past 3 seasons has involved bringing 'value' players in that are blocked at other Clubs & have the right attitude.
  • Since 2019 we have brought the following players in that are still here: Talau, Madden, Leilua, Musgrave, Doueihi, Blore, Kepaoa, Tamou, Utoikamanu, Simpkin, Roberts, Tuilagi, Ofahengaue, Simpkins, Laurie, Maumolo, Hastings, Gildart, Peachey, Tupou, T'oa, Naden. (MORE SUCCESSES THAN FAILURES)
  • On the flip, the following have departed/retired: Gamble, Fonua, Farah, Rochow, Marsters, Mautilino, Matterson, Thompson, McQueen, Marshall, Taylor, Lawrence, Jennings, Eisenhuth, McIntyre, Aloisi, Reynolds, Bradley, Momirovski, Walters, Packer, Mbye, Leilua, Chee Kam, Amone, Mikaele (I AM NOT DISAPPOINTED WITH ANY DEPARTURES)
  • No homegrown talent that has been developed from HM & SG Ball right up except for Nofoaluma, Brooks & Seyfarth. (THIS IS BEING ADDRESSED WITH SOME INITIAL SUCCESS SEEN IN HAROLD MATTHEWS, SG BALL & JERSEY FLEGG BUT IS A LONG TERM CAMPAIGN).
  • We do not have the Top 30 roster to contend but Madge isn't going to come out and say this. He is trying to get the right attitude & resolve amongst the boys to be competitive while continuing to recruit the right players & develop from within.
  • Yes our position on the ladder is not great but we have seen much better performances & attitude than last season. A change in a few moments in games this season & we could have easily have another 2-3 wins on the board.
  • What is diabolical has been our injury list. No team can compete with the number of 1st 17 players we've had on the sideline but on the flip we've been able to sight new players & get games into them. This injury list has had a flow-on affect into NSW Cup. For our JF team to be going so strong (with players up in Cup) shows the depth we have in that age group now.
  • Madge has recruited Korisau & Papaali into positions of need for next season.
  • Yes we have lost Garner, Leilua, Tuilagi but they are no superstars. Whilst it would have been good to maintain Leilua, his form dips and dives and is not rep quality in my opinion.
  • Under Sheens, Madge has addressed some of his shortcomings in the offseason with new support staff and being less of a micro manager. Shows he can be adaptable & always learning. Yes the one area I think he should look at which will come up in the review is his use of the interchange.
  • I believe the players do believe in him & we could not ask any more of his passion for the Club to succeed. When has it been shown that any player has been aggrieved with his style this season?
Sorry for the essay but I hate how the coach is always the scapegoat for many including media - absolute cop out! You look at the elements that Madge has to face. This is long-term guys and we need to address other issues first, like injury prevention, COE, those 1-2 additional signings for next season to make a difference and being able to maintain our youth.

Yes we may have to wait another couple of seasons to contend for the Top 8 but in 4-5 years time, we will be contending for silverware and will continue to be up there for a long period.

Great Post.

I think the question is..does Bellamy have the courage to to go to a bottom of the food chain club?
Does anyone think he would have enjoyed the same level of success had he taken the WT job 18 years ago?
He must know he will never be regarded as an elite coach by coaching only one club. The Blues coaching job was a complete failure for him, because 11 of the Maroons were from the Storm. Which is odd right? He trained those guys, he knew what their next moves would be, but for reasons known only to him didn’t have a tactical response?
What I’m trying to say is, Madge is worth hanging onto.
That qld team had a future immortal spine plus once in a generational talent across the park. A coach can only do so much.

Imho the knockbacks we have been getting is the players making a judgment on our club and its loser culture not necessarily the coach.Dollars and strength of a roster are the main attractions for getting top line players to a club not the coach.I believe Madge is the right person to get the club out of the manure that we have been since the JV as he is trying to change the festering mess that is our culture. We have made the semis a massive 4 times in 22 years and every one of us is annoyed by it.
Madge needs to see out his contract until the end of 2023 to try and fix the dire situation we have been in since the JV,getting a new coach only starts the cycle of crap again
Knockbacks can also be a reflection of attempting to not "pay overs". There's a very big difference between offering a fair contract and offering an obscene one, which logically must have a large impact on final decisions.

We only need to look at Bulldogs to see what can happen when you offer obscene contracts. Bulldogs simply cannot be argued to be a significantly better value proposition than Tigers in 2022/23.

Certainly, Bulldogs made the finals much more recently than Tigers (2016), but they've been well out of finals contention for the past 5 seasons, including second last and last in the past two seasons.

Despite some big-profile signings for 2022, Bulldogs are still last and have now sacked their coach, which puts them back almost at square-one.

If the rumours are to be believed, Dogs now have an issue to register their next big-name signings (Mahoney and Kikau) due to cap issues. Bulldogs allegedly shopping around Luke Thompson, and they are paying high-profile recruits who are not providing required output - JAC, TPJ, Dufty, Flanagan. It must be noted that Bulldogs outbid Tigers on both JAC and TPJ in contested bidding in 2021, which was fairly derided by some Tigers fans, and is now proving to be somewhat of a lucky miss for us.

So - Bulldogs outbid Tigers on several occasions, gambled with risky signings in non-key positions, and it's provably not paying off. The coach has taken a bullet for the trouble.

And in that respect, being turned down on certain high-value contracts ends up being a good thing for struggling clubs.

Then, being turned down for fair offers is, in some respects, also a good thing. It sucks that reputation alone doesn't convert all your fair offers, but at least you aren't making obscene offers in desperation, and you aren't setting yourself up for long-term pain.

I'd rather Tigers make 20 fair offers and execute 2, than make 5 obscene offers and get them all.

Exactly - Another reason to keep him on!!
People seem to forget the likes of Barrett (Widely considered amongst the best of the new coaches coming through)
Has quit 2 clubs in the same time as Madge has not quit us.

Further to this, we have the opportunity to stick fat with Madge which no other Club has done for a long time - I mean maintain a coach that has transformed a Club from a diabolical mess to premiership success. Imagine as supporters, how much pride we will feel when Madge lifts the premiership trophy!!!

Unfortunately us as members & supporters as well as the media live by week-to-week results and crave victory ... that is human nature. At the moment we have to be satisfied with 'effort' & 'commitment', some 'wins' but also accept there may be the off 'blow out'. But tell me, which teams apart from the top 3-4, don't have 'blow outs'.

Let the media do their thing - it doesn't mean we have to believe them or get carried away with their opinions/agendas.

We will get there! All of us long-time Balmain supporters (and also Wests) & then WT supporters did that through the 90s and early 00s, but by gee, didn't we enjoy that GF win in 05! We will get there and when we do, if our pathways are set up, we will enjoy finals football for a long time.

Vote 1 Madge,
Good post

Api K and I Papalii the only two players in demand that this club has been able to sign in forever.
This week we observed what happens to quality players that go to bottom of the table clubs - JAC not selected for SOO - a real message to those who have got options of the risk
Maguire may not be the solution- no one man is - but he is certainly not the problem either.
Wests Tigers are a poisoned wheel. They start off by have money to spend on class players but the class players don't want to come to the club because the club is near shambles with their record of win/lose results and it management structure. So the class players show their back to the Wests tigers despite the big money offered to them.

The coach and management, especially Pascoe and Madge need to be put on very severe notice and if they don't like it they can leave and the club. The club has hit near rock bottom so why stick for more years with current players, management and coach who have shown throughout their years at at the club that they are not up to it. This club needs a huge freshen up.

If they can't buy players with the hug money they have to spend they should donate it to a Charity rather than spend it on more run of the mill players who will continue the club's travel with the poison wheel.

Spot on Mate...
Most other coaches in his position would of went the "Dogs recruitment way" and went out and brought big signings and quick wins for a short term gain and keep the job.. However Madge to his credit knew this and went the long way like Panthers did a few years ago and it will be better for the log term. (you can see it already working)
As much as I hate this but can understand why Madge does this but he always sticks up for his players regardless and doesn't use Injuries or bad ref's as an excuse like most other coaches.
I've said it before but you put any other coach in the position that Madge has been in and they get the same results or worse. (even Belly, Bennett or Robinson)
The club was a shit fight 2-4 years ago and I think we can all agree on that.
As @BlackWhiteGold said above you add Api and Papa to this team with less injuries we are heading up..
Do I think Tigers will keep Madge - No I don't and that's unfortunate as he has done all the hard work.

Wests Tigers chair Lee Hagipantelis has refused to guarantee the future of Michael Maguire as head coach and concedes that change may be necessary to turn around the club’s fortune.

Tigers head of football Tim Sheens has begun a mid-year review into the club’s season and his recommendations will ultimately play a decisive role in Maguire’s future.

The Tigers have won only six of their past 23 games under Maguire and currently sit in 15th place on the ladder, having won only three games this season.

The club resisted the temptation to sack Maguire at the end of last year but his future is again in the spotlight as Sheens prepares to determine whether he is the right man to take the club forward.

“Tim Sheens has been engaged by the club as the director of football,” Hagipantelis told SEN radio on Tuesday morning.

“He is today arguably the most qualified man in the game of rugby league. As a club we put a lot of stock in Tim Sheens.

“He has just found an opportune time now … where he can just do a little health check and have a look at where we are sitting.

“From the board’s perspective it is business as usual today – there are no emergency board meetings, no panicked phone calls, no late night zoom hook-ups.

“Tim said he is going to look at how things are at the moment. He will come back to the board at the appropriate time with some recommendations.

“I am a firm believer in the old adage that you don’t buy a dog so you can bark yourself. Tim has been brought in for that role so he will let us know what if anything needs to be done so this club can get back on track.”

Asked whether he could guarantee Maguire’s future, Hagipantelis said: “As of today, 31 May 2022 Michael Maguire is the contracted head coach of the Wests Tigers and there is nothing before me to indicate that will change.

“But will I guarantee anyone’s employment whether it be the head coach, or head of commerce, or the CEO’s role? No, I will not give that guarantee.

“The issuing of guarantees has certain legal ramifications. At the moment we are somewhat disappointed with where we are sitting at the moment on the table.

“Do we need to make some changes? I suspect we do. We will leave it to the great man to come back to us.

“The board puts a lot of stock in Tim Sheens and his recommendations.”

Load of crap man.....
Near rock bottom? How?
Realistically - What's the difference between 9th (Our usual best)
and the 3-4 losses at 15-16th?
Nothing.

We're no where near rock bottom - And despite the "skys falling in mentality" We're far from the worst team in the comp!!
There's teams that have been near full strength, With Origin players that are even or a measely win or 2 better than us.

I heard it - It doesn't read the way it was said!!

It hasnt been about 2022.

Madge is here to break the cycle if softness and the poor culture that has been here for the majority of our existence.

We have a club culture problem.

I dont understand that when where in the cusp of breaking free that short sighted management will dump the guy who has fought for the club long term.
I wish I could have been so exact. Well put.
