Michael Maguire leaves club

Wests Tigers chair Lee Hagipantelis has refused to guarantee the future of Michael Maguire as head coach and concedes that change may be necessary to turn around the club’s fortune.

Tigers head of football Tim Sheens has begun a mid-year review into the club’s season and his recommendations will ultimately play a decisive role in Maguire’s future.

The Tigers have won only six of their past 23 games under Maguire and currently sit in 15th place on the ladder, having won only three games this season.

The club resisted the temptation to sack Maguire at the end of last year but his future is again in the spotlight as Sheens prepares to determine whether he is the right man to take the club forward.

“Tim Sheens has been engaged by the club as the director of football,” Hagipantelis told SEN radio on Tuesday morning.

“He is today arguably the most qualified man in the game of rugby league. As a club we put a lot of stock in Tim Sheens.

“He has just found an opportune time now … where he can just do a little health check and have a look at where we are sitting.

“From the board’s perspective it is business as usual today – there are no emergency board meetings, no panicked phone calls, no late night zoom hook-ups.

“Tim said he is going to look at how things are at the moment. He will come back to the board at the appropriate time with some recommendations.

“I am a firm believer in the old adage that you don’t buy a dog so you can bark yourself. Tim has been brought in for that role so he will let us know what if anything needs to be done so this club can get back on track.”

Asked whether he could guarantee Maguire’s future, Hagipantelis said: “As of today, 31 May 2022 Michael Maguire is the contracted head coach of the Wests Tigers and there is nothing before me to indicate that will change.

“But will I guarantee anyone’s employment whether it be the head coach, or head of commerce, or the CEO’s role? No, I will not give that guarantee.

“The issuing of guarantees has certain legal ramifications. At the moment we are somewhat disappointed with where we are sitting at the moment on the table.

“Do we need to make some changes? I suspect we do. We will leave it to the great man to come back to us.

“The board puts a lot of stock in Tim Sheens and his recommendations.”

Lee is such a flog, will run from 4km away to stick his face in front of a microphone.

Madge can't attract a player. Even from his souths days or coach of NZ. Sure we have landed some up and comers but no big names. Even paying overs we can't Jag one . Suspect chriton from the roosters has knocked us back too, a player he coached.

Some people on hear will say oh but look at the dogs how are the marquee traveling there.. well we won't know how they will go here because we can't get one... We need a big name to transform us otherwise it's a slow burn. Add 3 more yrs to 10 yrs of failures. Supporters deserve a winning team..

Have we not got two 'big names' coming next year??

I like Madge and have defended him alot over the years, his passion for the club has never been a question and he is a person I love as our coach. I do think he has been given the toughest gig in the game and we are now moving into for once a blank canvas territory.

Yes he has lost more than he has won
Yes we have gone backwards on the ladder
Yes he has had a massive roster/salary cap bungle that he needed to clean up
Yes he has had to deal with the total lack of pathways development focus
Yes we have zero identity
Yes he has flaws with his coaching style, staff selections, tactics and trust in his playing group

But who else is available that right now could step into this hole and pick us up?

Over the years we have coaches to come in and perform a cleanout then get punted or stay on without giving a crack on the full roster rebuild.

Madge has had to endure a heck of alot, yes he has brought a fair bit on himself as well with his coaching staff selections, roster & player choices mixed with terrible attacking formations as well.

Our biggest focus area for the next 3yrs+ will be pathways, junior & younger player development.

In 4yrs I'm yet to see our juniors or younger players really advance their skills under Madge and this is a massive massive concern. Park recruitment, performance & retention it's more about if Madge can actually coach/develop players in the modern game to the next level - this is something I am really struggling to buy into and is a massive concern for us.

I don't have an issue if he stays but he can't stay with the same support cast (reserve grade/player development/attacking coach), something has to change 1 way or another. Would I be devastated if he left no because I do think now would be the perfect time for a new coach to join one that is focussed on junior / player development.

Api K and I Papalii the only two players in demand that this club has been able to sign in forever.
This week we observed what happens to quality players that go to bottom of the table clubs - JAC not selected for SOO - a real message to those who have got options of the risk
Maguire may not be the solution- no one man is - but he is certainly not the problem either.

So first we can't sign players with Maguire now we can't retain signed players because of Maguire.

It's a good point. These are areas in which we need to succeed if we're going to break the cycle. I like that we've started investing in youngsters (Stefano, Laurie et al), but we haven't really seen any of these guys progress to quality FGers as of yet. Yes it's early days for them, but I suspect the plan would have been to see more from them by now.
If we can't sign stars then we need to make our own.

Pretty Sure Api K who is 29 years old, in SOO and in his prime might disagree.
Papa is like the best 2nd rower in the game and still only 23 years old is a Marquee player if you ask most as well.
We have had one of the worst injury rates ever this year and are still not on the bottom of the ladder. If we had most players available we would have another 2-3 wins and be an attractive place to sign for others. The club will not pay overs these days and can understand that but if we get players back and start winning games IMO other will join.

Whether Madge stays or goes is besides the point, the point here again is this.

There's no doubt that the WT are the bread and butter for the NRL news media.

My question is why aren't they writing as much about the Bulldogs and others? And to also find them a new coach for them?

When our Chairman has issued statements like today the journo's refuse to accept the meanings of them as they are said and meant.
and so they are writing stories as if the coach has been sacked with wild exagerrated headlines again and again?

Lee Hagipantelis (today) “the word review has become a dirty word”..

But the story-hungry, biased, lying journo's supposedly understood all of this to mean this?IMG_20220531_124031.jpg

Disagree HT,

The clubs historically has attracted dregs for almost our entire history.

THe one successful year was of the back of young blood, inovation and a very solid 7.

Madge has had to battle the culture and reputation of the Tigers.

Can’t improve if they are sitting in the grandstands…

When he's finally had money to spend,
Madge has recruited the Best Back rower in the Game, And the incumbent NSW Origin hooker....
(Both played under him previously)
How many does he have to get for you to acknowledge it?

Not every player is available to every club - despite what you think.

If they are going to do an honest review it must include all of the football dept,Madge, assistants, players and INJURIES to the top NRL team..
Lets face it if Madge gets sacked because of the results of the last 12 games, having half your NRL team on the sideline, the makeshift sides playing very well even though they have lost and chopping and changing players in positions to at least try and field a competative side even though the attitude and culture are improving dramatically, then this club will be destined for future failure because they havent learnt from their mistakes....good luck to Madge,he deserves to be treated with the respect he gives our team and club....
This is the main reason I honestly feel Madge deserves to stay. The injuries have been a major disruption to any team progress and measuring the team's (and player) development. IMO individuals such as Toa, Maumalo, Tamou, Joffa and Brooks have had increased roles for the team. Probably others too.
Roosters sacked their strength and conditioning coach during the offseason due to this reason, so perhaps that's the next step for us.

I know there are some businessman on the forum who have explained theses types of reviews are common (even sometimes done quarterly), so it's clearly all an overreaction and all eyes are upon us once again.
