Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Apparently Staines from Panthers got his manager to approach tigers about being our fullback but we weren't interested

Thank God for that
If we don't get Dykes then I think we should consider Staines. He has upside, just not sure if he will fulfill that upside. He has learnt to play more physical, which at least gives us coverage at 1, 2 and even in the centres.

Ciraldo tours Tiger-town as Sheens prepares five-year deal for NRL’s hottest coaching property

The Wests Tigers have sold a strong pitch to Penrith assistant coach Cameron Ciraldo by giving the NRL coach-in-waiting a guided tour of the club’s soon to be opened Centre of Excellence at Concord.

Foxsports.com.au has learned Ciraldo met with Wests Tigers key powerbrokers Tim Sheens and chairman Lee Hagipantelis on Monday.

Four-time premiership-winning coach Sheens sold the Tigers vision about the club being an NRL sleeping giant – with the catch being they need the right development coach to bring through the next generation of juniors.
We've been a sleeping giant so long you'd have to think Flanagan had already visited but brought the wrong baggie from home.
I'm not sold on Ciraldo - I hate to say it but I'd prefer Flanagan - despite the drug crap he guided and moulded a hard-nosed team.

He's certainly different to Maguire. I read where he reviewed the skllls of the players he had at the Sharks and changed the gameplan to suit those skills. This is different to Maguire's one size fits all approach. Just a pity his copy book is stained with what occurred.

Can't agree, Papali'i has had two strong years at Parra, but make no mistake he was bog average at the Warriors, lets see how he is going in three years time before we start saying he is some sort of messiah.
I didn’t call him a messiah, but no doubt the quality around him in a top 4 forward pack has improved his game. We don’t have that and if he’s going to be our guy with some other forwards leaving, I fear for him.

If we are still talking long term three years time - why not give the Walker Brothers a go. They have backed themselves to make a difference in one year or walk. Two minds better than one with the demands and challenge required with this position. They want the position backed themselves, are talking in the here and now have approached Sheens. They seem more footy focussed than any other coaches And may generate some excitement around playing the game.

Charlie Staines approached the Tigers about playing fullback in 2023 according to Fox Sports.

Would be interesting...
Move Brooks on, Laurie to 5/8 and Staines to Fullback?

Brooks and Laurie are both under pressure. Staines is also under pressure.

You keep them all and they compete to make the top grade. The best performers stay.

Personally I hope we get the Dykes kid. He looks good.

Not sure if anyone posted the whole story ref Staines wanting to join the Tigers .. so here it is:

OUT OF FAVOUR PANTHERS STAR APPROACHES TIGERS

Out of favour Panthers winger Charlie Staines has reportedly approached the Tigers about a club switch to play fullback.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported Staines’ management made a phone call to the Tigers to gauge their interest in signing their client as a fullback for 2023.

Staines is not off-contract until the end of 2023 at Penrith, but has fallen out of favour after the emergence of Taylan May when Brian To’o was injured early in the year.

May was leading the NRL try-scorers tally and switched wings when To’o returned, with Staines dropping to reserve grade where he has played ever since.

However, it appears the Tigers are not interested in Staines as a fullback and are in discussions with Daine Laurie, another former Panthers player to extend his stay at the club.

21-year-old Staines burst onto the scene as a 19-year-old in 2019 scoring four tries on debut and six in two games and scored 14 in 21 games in Penrith’s premiership season in 2021.

However, Staines has struggled to cross the stripe this year and has scored just two tries in nine games, while his path to a spot in his preferred position of fullback at Penrith is blocked by Dylan Edwards.

If Newcastle are trying to poach Hastings .. why don't we offer them Brooks or Madden or why not both .. lol

Buys:

Apisai Koroisua / Hooker
Isaiah Papali'i / Back rower
Triston Reilly / Centre - Wing (23yrs - 1.8m - 97kgs)

Maybe's:

Charlie Stanies / Wing - Fullback
Kade Dykes / Fullback

I love how you had to describe Reilly as nobody has ever seen the guy 🤣

More ref Staines though:

It's understood however that the Tigers knocked back the approach, instead focusing their energy on re-signing Daine Laurie, with an over abundance of young wingers already in their squad pushing for a position behind regular starters David Nofoaluma and Ken Maumalo.

Laurie is off-contract at the end of the 2023 season and able to field offers from rival clubs from November 1, should he not wish to re-sign with the Tigers.

Intriguingly, the star fullback has been linked with a move away, with other clubs reportedly interested in his services from 2024, or potentially earlier if they could secure a release from the Tigers.

It's understood Laurie's preference is to remain at the Tigers.
