Wests Tigers Coaches

What makes Cleary such a great coach is imo his ability to sum up a player's skillset and work that player into the gameplan based around the skills and limitations that player possesses. Brooks is a great example of this and Cleary's results with him only reaffirm his status in the game as a great coach. All the great coaches have this ability = Sheens, Bennett, Bellamy, Cleary and I'm going to include Payten as well.
That’s the job of the coach. Every coach does this.
If Cleary is such a great coach, why did he let Burton go?

What the hell dude ? You asked a condescending question , I answered that question thoroughly and now you twist it again . Are you ever wrong ? There’s people on here going into meltdown over this season , and whilst it sux , and yes we are here discussing it , and how frustrating it is ,it’s worth keeping it all in perspective . If you can’t understand why saying that on here is a good thing , then there’s no hope for you .
Have an actual read of the last 50 off pages and tell me what it reads like . Anyone would think the world is ending . But nope we just follow a bad football team .
It does not read like sane rational thoughts , for large parts of it .
Nobody is going into meltdown over this season, which was predicted. 12 years plus of failure on the other hand. In ‘football terms’ it’s a disaster. Am I wrong, yes, on this, no.

Does it really matter who he has let go? There completely dominating the comp every decision they have made has been correct so far

You cannot keep every player at Penrith it was either jarome lulali or burton they stuck with jarome and it is paying off

Again, this was Maguire's roster. He cannot blame others after 3.5 years, that is just ridiculous.. What about second phase play? In any sport, it is the level of enthusiasm a coach can generate that determines the chase and competing for the ball, be it rugby league, soccer or netball. It appeared our team was trained not to compete for the ball in fear of the opposition launching a counter attack. In the end, the club agreed and he's gone about 3.5 years too late.
Rubbish Paws it's the clubs roster - and those same players got smacked under Noddy/Sheens direction for the last two games.
They use to call it Taylor ball when he was here. Stop making excuses for players who are not to the standard of their opposition.

Which of the new recruits said 'he came for the money'... with that attitude he won't play his best then will he ?
It wasn’t Api. I don’t know if that’s a signal of his intent? There’s a lot to be said for giving an appropriate introduction to new players. At Storm I believe they put the new guy to work on a pick and shovel for a few weeks. Then ask him to decide between the two career options. At the Tigers I think it’s more of a familiarisation tour around the tin sheds and the new gym.
Storm players are all out of towners so they would bond more strongly, while Tigers players wouldn’t know much about each other. Nofa played golf with Benji, but had no idea who else in the team plays golf.

Yeah but if it’s clearly not working why persist with it? Why not try something els isn’t that the coaches job to get the best out of the players he has also Penrith play nothing like that they attack every tackle and are very unpredictable same goes for the storm
Mate if your forwards can't get over the advantage line and your backs are bog average you keep it simple and play percentage footy.
Comparing anything that the current Penrith team does is setting yourself up to fail.

The Panthers are stacked with talent with more emerging every season. There is a limit to what can be fitted under the cap🙂 A decision was made and Burton is gone. Has it impacted the Panthers?

Coaches build rosters and rosters win matches. At present no coach we can attract has the ability to attract players. In the past the coach has been handicapped by a busted cap, not so now.

Unless we lured Bellyache or Robo things will not change in the near future.

The scenes in the sheds at halftime to me didn't look that grand. It seems many players had tuned out of Maguire. That is on him. He needed to fine tune his coaching to suit his audience. Good grief, our players in the second half would play as though each had been given a dose of mogadon at half time, not a motivational speech.

Time to drop the Cleary loving and Maguire bashing.
If I was summarise our games under Cleary he appeared to have a game plan style per team we played. When that didn’t work we lost and by quite a large margin.
For eg;
Storm games were very penalty focused not allowing them to get any momentum in the game.
Manly game at Brookie we played there style agaisnt them, started fast and moved them around early as they like to start with a lot of momentum from the get go.
It worked for a time. But we still dropped a game against a bit part Titans at Leichhardt. Lost to the wooden spooners were creamed by the three teams with huge forward packs.

Madge has a style, it works, you need only witness the dominance of the NZ team; It just wasn’t right for us. At his inception I believed we needed to move away from this tigers logic of just throwing the ball around to catch teams off guard and not worrying about the defensive aspect of the game. However it appears a defensive focus and structured game plan is too boring to be adopted here. It was a bit of JT Mac 2.
In saying that he and Hartigan despite copping the blame for the shortfalls in the current roster deserve credit for getting the wheels in motion in our junior tiers and uniting the two regions and players. Been long forgotten about since Taylor had about 10 WT juniors debut through different stages of 2015/2016. Although he promoted the players into first grade there wasn’t any focus on redeveloping the next crop.
Taylor / Cleary had Paps, Stone, Tatola, Paseka, Brown, JMK, TMM, Seve at the club in the juniors who all left for greener pastures whilst, JJ Felise, Suli, Helata, Lovett, Milone, Masters were retained.

What a load of BS. It's that level of support that is exactly why the two constants Brooks and Nofa have never owned their deficiencies and continue to ride the merry go round while those that want better get out where the players are held accountable for their poor performances.

People still think if we get a popular coach we'll suddenly be able to attract players.

It doesn't matter who is coach, we are the joke of the league and players and player managers know this.

Players join WT for 2 reasons:
- Significantly higher money than other clubs (Api, Papali'i, Mbye, Packer)
- No other options (Roberts, BJ, Joffa, Hastings, Gildart, Peachey, Mahe, Reynolds)

That's not going to change until we have consistent finals appearances and stop leaking every event to the media.

Of course, who needs another origin star in the team.
I understand he's a great player but what option did the Panthers' have? When you look at the 5/8, he's an Origin star as is the half and one of the centres. The other centre has emerged as a great prospect and under the salary cap he is cheaper. Add to that the fullback keeps producing, one of the wingers is an Origin star and the other another an emerging star. To back this up, they have Turuva who appears to be another great prospect.
