Wests Tigers Coaches

In his prime and not injured ill never forgot the combo he had with benji, those looooong passes they would fire off and the inside fullback pass up the middle.

Had his issue in defence but attack was class.
I remember watching a game against the Sharks at Endeavour or Caltex Field and he went on a scything run from well inside his quarter and was tackled by the fullback near their try line. I recall Ricky Stuart after the game saying that he didn't realise Moltzen was that quick.

Latrell said he’d strongly consider tigers if benji was head coach

Weird statement to make or just banter between two mates

He is an elite player. One of the biggest grubs in the game. He could turn us around though. I'd love him here.

Can you imagine a mature non grubby Latrell. Him and Tommy Turbo would be the two players in the comp most likely to win their team the game.

I can see Benji hosting his own variety show - at halftime in each of our home games - 15 minutes long - with special guests.
'In the Sheds With Benji'

Gould was 30 when he started 1st grade coaching and took the Dogs to a premiership in 1988 in year 1 after retiring in 86

Sheens retired in 82 and started coaching Panthers in 84 (age 33) and took them to their first ever finals series in 85.

Bennett started captain -coaching with Ipswich at 26

Benji will be 40 when he spends his first year as head coach and will have had 22 years in the NRL across playing and coaching including 2 years as an assistant.
Do you have any examples that aren’t from 40 years ago?

Just my opinion.

some May see it as jobs for the boys or the club being silly about DNA shit and the like but, for me we are talking about three guys who are staking their reputations and putting their balls on the block.
both BM and RF are competitors, they want to win that’s how they played and by all accounts that’s how they live their lives. I don’t think they would take the job for a payday. They are all well paid already so why take on a shit job.
I’d like to believe it is for something more than money.
the question is will they be able to pull it off. If they surround them selves with good people and some additional players(which I hope they are capable of attracting) then I think they can.
interesting times ahead and I hope some success.
If it works it will be a master stroke. It is a massive risk. It’s not just about money. His heart is probably in the right place even though his ego drives it.

My concern is that when the going gets tough and it undoubtedly will, the club is unable to act in a professional manner.

I don’t think it’s coincidence that there has been a ton of recent media leaks and suddenly benji is rising to the top.

It happened every time benji didn’t get his way and they dried up when he was out of the picture.

I respect Benji for his highlight reel and for 05. That’s a fine slice within the whole picture. I won’t go on about how inconsistent he was, the lack of finals appearances etc. it’s been done to death.

Benji loves the club yet he shat on us multiple times even after the club gave him multiple second chances.

I get the big picture with what the club is doing but I’m struggling to marry this up with an individual who burnt many tigers supporters.

I will probably get over it. Life’s too short and I like watching footy too much.

My opinion - it means players backing their natural instinct on-field whether in terms of decision making or opportunities to score. The opposite is a regimented style. The good teams can do both like the Storm or we are seeing it now with the Broncos. It's good to watch.
To me that sounds like players running their own race... No one knowing what the others are doing.... Much like when benji played.

Well see I guess.. but I'm not confident... Hopeful, that's all we can be

Just because you have never coached before does not mean you are not a good coach. I am old enough to remember Gus becoming the Bulldogs coach at the age of 30 (if my memory serves me right). He turned out alright. Our own Premiership winning coach got thrown the keys at a young age also. In my opinion the best ever. Ill back Benji - good luck mate.
It’s kinda like being a leader or a manager. You can have all the training in the world but still be a dunce. A leader steps up through the fold and elects themselves rarely does it work out if they are elected through preference.
In this instance it appears Benji has done just that.
He also seems to have right personally trait for it.

I agree! You summed up my response. Playing 'eyes up' footy and not so focused on following a set structure for the 6 tackles. It requires the hooker & halves to be more instinctive & forwards to use more 2nd phase play with fullback often backing up following play (eg Hodgson).
I wonder why we cannot do that now though?
With an ex half as a coach, and the season gone... Why can't we do this?
We all.know.why....you need the cattle and right type of player... Recruitment
And you need to be able to defend (something we've never achieved) because this type of footy lends itself to a high error rate

Has anyone told Benji he’d need to give his media gig away? I feel he has the personality where he wakes up and suddenly he feels in the mood to do X. Its probably not something he wanted to do the day before, and won’t want to do it the day after. If he’s always had a burning desire to coach over his cushy media gig, then I’m a pigmy from Africa. As for the club, I feel like lack of interest from any real candidates lead them to throwing their hands in the air and trying something they feel is innovative. At the same time, they must have licked their lips at the PR potential, and to romanticise the hell out of it, which they did in the press release with Pascoe waffling on about WT’s DNA. While Benji definitely wasn’t the best candidate, which I’m sure they would know, they’ve gone the route of trying to drum up excitement amongst a supporter base that is feeling very jaded and over it by appointing a club legend who is a popular figure. His appointment is for positive press more than anything else imo.

Yep eyes up footy only works if you have the talent to execute it and the players to defend it. We don't have either in our squad. Our only chance of competing is mistake free footy and getting into a position to attack

Being honest anybody has the same risk. I’d rather pay Benji out than ciraldo. No matter what Benji got us there. 🏆

So did Cherry Mescia - I can't see him automatically becoming coach either.
Ciraldo at least has plenty of experience....
And doesn't bang on to media any chance he gets.

I am a huge Sheens' fan. I've never forgotten what he did for the club or the style of football played. I'll be hammered for this but Tim Moltzen was one of my favourites - pace, step, passing etc. Good in the halves and at centre.

You forgot the most important part about Moltz - For 9 Games.

Depends what assistants he gets

Sheens cheerleader here - Sheens is here to mentor Benji and Robbie for two years. The Board has acted to improve on-field performance. I support this, do you?
I will, yes. I've stated while I don't agree with the decision I support the club.

You however were calling for Madge to be sacked for the last 2 years. It's only fair that Sheens/Benji get the same treatment if they are not winning, unless there is another reason why you support Sheens so strongly?
