Wests Tigers Coaches

You’d be hard pressed finding any other person in the NRL with less formal coaching experience than Benji.

He’s simply been appointed on the young matey basis.

A young mate gets to coach an NRL side, not because he can actually coach, but because he’s a mate.

What a ridiculous idea

Agreed what rubbish , give the bloke a go before u start heaping crap on him , he has one thing u will never have , balls to have a go and try and get the club he LOVES back on track .
That’s a bit harsh. I’m sure most of us would accept a first grade coaching gig if the club ever bothered to read the profound opinions that are on this forum.

This is pretty good. For the Brooks bashers he actually mentions Brooks as a player who may come on in a different system. He mentions Doueihi in that same situation.

He also mentions speed which makes me think they may stick with Brooks.

Johnny Gibbs and Luke Lewis are excellent commentators. I wish they had greater exposure. Here the main issues I took from that interview -

  1. Changing system for a roster will bring out a player's natural talent
  2. Players frustrated with previous system - mentioned Brooks
  3. Coaching philosophy is to score more points than opponent (rule book)
  4. Clearly unhappy with coaching philosophy prior to his arrival
  5. 10 youngsters in system earmarked for top 30 in next two to three years
  6. Brooks is the quickest in club
  7. Api will make a difference at 9.
  8. Luke Lewis said Sheens was the best coach he ever had.
  9. Players must have speed for the position.

Scott Prince revealed that he would be open to become an assistant coach at his former club if he was offered.

“If they reached out and we had a decent conversation around it and work out what my role would entail, I certainly wouldn’t say no to it,” he said.

“I would definitely sit down and have a conversation about it.

“I think it’s important having some older players and very successful players being involved with the club to help the team through difficult times.

“They are taking the right steps to get it done.”

This was interesting and I think Sheens has it right. You can't just grind out wins consistently.

Interestingly he mentioned Brooks speed. He also mentioned Doueihi. We should add this was in the context of questions on the roster. Sheens thinks player can improve under a new system.

Absolutely. He also said a player must have speed for the position.

He is also much better than our past coach at attracting good players to Wests tigers.

Can't help it one bit but luuurve Brooks. Just do.
Get the comment about his speed, as there were two instances yesterday where he completely shut down plays that would've led to tries but also understand (and agree with) the criticism about his poor onfield leadership and execution. Therefore the following passage isn't particularly to back him or say anyone's negative opinion of him is unwarranted, but rather to state as long as we are selling ourselves as a development club - and aiming to be a successful one at that - his growth/form is the biggest sticking point.

Honestly I love Doueihi and think it's because he has the total opposite attitude to Brooks, but I believe he's a better centre until he further develops.
Jackson is the more complete player for mine and a strong team leader but both he and Doueihi are slow as snails and I personally find the Hastings and Brooks the better combination. Putting all my bias aside, Brooksy's main issue is he is too unassertive to be a halfback and his inability to read defence/numbers is worrying for the NRL experience he has. His poor kicking game also needs to be addressed. IMO when he gets it (everything without overpaying his hand) right he's a good playmaker and I can see it's (the club's persistence with him) about bringing this ability out consistently.

Think sheens just planning for next year. Also 3 coaches in a season probably not best for the players.
3 coaches in a season is pretty standard when you sack a coach midseason. Most clubs have their new coach start immediately, and the interim coach goes back to previous duties, but we are just different to every other club in the comp. We start our new coach next season, even though he's already with us.

I guess he just wants nothing to do with coaching the squad this season
