Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Very rehearsed and unwilling to commit...which is fine
What's not fine is leaving the door ajar for Paps to wriggle out of his contract!
Shld have taken much stronger stance on what is shaping up as Matto 2.0
Let see what happens. The flip side could be if he comes out all huff and puff like we did with Aloiai we are a chance of driving him further off. Keep it behind closed doors and don’t start stamping feet and maybe they can reach a better outcome.

i bet you IPap is watching these current WT/NRL dramas with interest.
Well done WT , keep showing up the game , no way IPap would dare opt out , fearing a legal challenge . This is the best scenario for the WT to rid themselves of the friendly/cop it on the chin kind of team.
I HOPE this is the awakening of the NRL sleeping giant.
So we can no longer will be messed with.

Staines is not a better fullback then Laurie and Laurie has continued to improve and will be our fullback for future years if he doesn’t get poached, Also Staines isn’t better than Maumalo / Nofa / Kepaoa so unless we signing him for depth which we don’t even need I guess he can be a good cover for fullback at the right price but that’s it. I’d rather us save the money we are gunna spend on him to chuck an extra 200k at a good front rower or backrower / centre, wreaks of us just signing him because he’s available and doesn’t have other options besides us.
I disagree with you regarding Nofa/Kepoa. I believe Staines of 2022 is a superior winger than anyone at the club bar maybe Ken but he has the pace that Ken lacls

I'm going to lose my sh*t if Paps backs out. One of the few shining lights to look forward to in 2023.
People keep saying this but I don't see how he can back out. He has signed a contract, I assume there are no back-out clauses, he's legally obligated to play for us. If we hold firm, which we must, he either plays for us or doesn't play. We can't fold like we did with Matterson, Moses etc.

And if he doesn't play he doesn't get paid

In what world do people think this actually works?
It's 2022 not 1942.

If he doesn't front - He'll be sent a breach notice, 3 Breach notices we'll have no choice but to sack him....
There's 30 other young blokes that will be witnessing all this and it will create a bad vibe in the playing group.
We could also take him to court - That costs time money and resources - For what? If he chooses to rescind the contract what are you going to do...
It's an employment contract - Not slavery papers.
He'll just go play union.... And walk in.
We sack him, Parra sign him and pay him the agreed contract value
- Which they'd be matching ours now they have the money....

I see it going like this,
- We assume we have a contract, So we will do absolutely nothing.
- Meanwhile Parra will be chipping away at him everyday, Until he's convinced there's no other option.
- He won't arrive for the end of pre-season and will be released to join the Eels....
- We'll deal with it then.

OR
- We've already had discussions and he's told us he won't be here, We've accepted it and moved on and the club isn't letting us know until it's too late...
Again, He's not due at the club until late January.

Stinks of the Marty Taupau situation
- Remember while he was away at the world cup or whatever, It just came out that he wasn't coming back.....

Remember everyone, It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

We have to stand firm. A contract is a contract unless both parties agree to mutually terminate. There is no compassionate grounds. Only the Eels now wanting to keep him on more than they were originally offering when he agreed to sign with us.

We have to be clear to IP and his management, that they need to acknowledge what is fair & reasonable:

- We have made roster decisions since his signing based on him being here & how much cap space he is taking up. For example, if he didn't sign it may have completely altered our offers to Luciano & Kelma, we may have gone all out to re-sign Garner & we may have upped our 'supposed' offers to Briton Nikora & Angus Chrichton.

SURELY HIS MANAGEMENT & IP UNDERSTAND THIS and the ramifications it can have for our Club for years.

Now what is possibly fair & reasonable, is that if IP wants us to agree to a contract termination, we must sign another backrower of similar value & qualities as a replacement. The onus must be on his management to help in these negotiations and the arrange the difference in salary for this NEW player to come from the Eels.

There are probably only 2 backrowers (maybe 3) that I would consider:

Liam Martin
Angus Crichton
Jack Howarth (for his potential to be the next big thing)

So let's say Liam Martin wants $650k, then Eels must pay the difference to what IP would be paid by us.

Thoughts?
