NRL admits bunker mistake

I really feel like their (nrl) actions are doing them more damage than anything.

It's comical the things he has said and to me it looks more and more like they have things they can't afford to have exposed by the day.

I did previously say it would be like taking the company you work for to court and in the long term be a bad move.

But then I thought:
"Oh no! They'll lose all their prime time home games!"
No... That's Brisbane, Melbourne, Roosters....

"They'll lose as much funding for redeveloping Leichhardt as the sharks and Manly are getting!"
Oh, hang on... That's not right either....

"In those games where it's really tight, they'll no longer 'seem to' just get the rub of the green!"
🤔 That doesn't sound right either.

Yes, I'm being hyperbolic and facetious, but the point is I thought "fk it. They're treated like shit anyway, so what have they got to lose?"

Also, didn't South Sydney regain entry to the nrl by taking them to court?

Mr Racing knows it was not a error of judgment but a absolute rort of the rules and he knows the Tigers would have a real chance of winning a legal challenge but worse, exposing the NRL to possibly something more sinister.
Tigers have no chance of winning in court, I don't know what legal precedent or argument you guys think Tigers could make.

A mis-application or misinterpretation of the rule book, i.e. a mistake, is not sufficient grounds for legal action resulting in an overturned result.

PVL is correct that if such a thing were true, the clubs would be in court every week to try and undo some injustice.

* From years of reading and posting here, I'll let you know @jirskyr that I always read your posts and really respect your opinions and how you have yours and let others have theirs.

So I'm pretty sure you won't mind me having a different one. 😊

--------------------------------

I'm not a lawyer, so I'm not in a place to speak in absolutes about whether or not they have grounds to litigate.

But Lee Hangipantelis is (I know - not his area of expertise. We've been through that).

And if the previous post (screen cap below) is correct, why did V'Landys say he "hoped they would not commence legal action"?

Why is it that shortly after the fact, the ARLC (of which he is the chairman!) called for their own investigation into it?

How's that going btw? Anyone heard?

And why do the tigers have to have precedent?

It's common knowledge this is unprecedented; That's why it's such an issue.

Just because no nrl club has previously taken the nrl to court over...

[a missed penalty for illegal recommencement of play (with 1 second left on the clock); the ref blowing the whistle; an ignored captains challenge where the ref clearly states "it's been cleared"; the bunker talking to the referee when, afaik, is not supposed to even happen during regular play (?); accepting a captains challenge against a call that never existed; having the bunker rule that a player has committed a foul - that even the nrl's own head of football publicly said was wrong; awarding a penalty for said wrong call to the team 1 point behind after 80 minutes and a tackle had been affected; the penalty being successfully converted, thus winning the game for that team]

... And won the case is no reason for them not to try.
There's a first time for everything.

With yet another insulting little snipe, he makes the "we'd be in court every week if we let this happen" comment that is derisive and intended to dilute the real issue and make such a notion thought foolish.

I honestly believe that the exact opposite of what V'Landys says about it setting a bad precedent is true.

From that moment until they decide they're ready to talk about the rules, they can now be exploited and should a similar situation happen in the meantime, precedent has now been set that a captain can challenge a call that hasn't even been made, even when everyone thinks its full time.

The bunker can only review plays resulting in a try or captains challenge. The bunker will review the entire play from it's commencement to its conclusion. The first infringement of the play nullifies all subsequent ones, even the one being disputed, and dictates the ruling.

Well none of those seem to be true now because that's not what happened!

That is what I believe is the Pandora's box.

To me it's as simple as this:

The game has rules.
A team won a game in an amazing comeback, scoring two tries in the last 5 minutes, fairly and according to the rules of the game.
Yes!!! An all too rare great moment for any tigers fan!

The rules of the game were then clearly not followed (in not just one, but at least three instances) - by the officials employed by the very association that wrote them!

Not only that, but at the start of each year they send them to every club so it is all clear, in black and white.

Hmm, black and white makes grey. Maybe that's the "grey area"? But I digress....

In a display of either astonishing incompetence, or possibly 'some other' lurking reason, the team who won the game fairly and squarely, according to the rules, somehow lost.

It's a sport. The very word is synonymous with fair play (in Australia at least! 🤣) . Be a sport. Show good sportsmanship....

I shouldn't be so upset about this.

But I think anyone with a half decent sense of fairness knows what's right and what's wrong.

Any spin V'Landys or anyone else wants to put on it, this is just plain wrong.

In my view, if I've done something wrong that can be made right, then I'm fking doing it.

@TurnStyle & @jirskyr thank you both for your words.

Unfortunately the real loser in all this will be WT if no action is taken. Yes mistakes do happen , but this was deliberate. PV has had 2 weeks to clear the air yet we’re still waiting. That is the misjustice, apology and move on , all rolled into one. No NRL supporter accepts this , their team can suffer a similar fate .
It is important that at the very least our own WT representatives can listen to the audio, in order to reassure all fans that , under the WT understanding that mistakes do happen and the club can move forward. YOU can not fix mistakes if you don’t acknowledge them all individually, corruption is the same.
We are not stalling , hiding , hindering or shaming the game, the NRL has achieved that.
All I know is , someone has mentioned that our board will vote on the next move we make, before todays game.
The question will be , What was said and what are they voting on ?
This is our grey area, we will never know.
We are WT. We unite and we fight.
No one is bigger than the game. Definitely not PV.
Love ya x2

I don't care for the 2 points. I just want the NRL exposed in a court of law and those tapes played for all to hear. We have been the leagues whipping boys for to long and its about time we stand up as a club and hit them front on. The NRL have never made decisions to benefit us in everything they do. Its time to expose their bullshit.

We all deserve the truth.

Can someone please confirm , where was it mentioned that the WT board will vote before todays game ?

Wests Tigers are still considering whether or not to pursue the NRL legally for the two competition points they were denied because of a referee error despite meeting with the governing body last Thursday.
It is understood the majority of the Tigers board will meet on Sunday before the clash against Newcastle at Campbelltown Stadium.
The board will decide if there is an appetite to push their case to the next level and chase the two competition points they felt they deserve following their dramatic loss to North Queensland.

Tigers officials Lee Hagipantelis and Justin Pascoe met with the NRL top brass on Thursday at Peter V’landys’ office at Racing NSW headquarters. They were told that mistakes were made but given no indication the result would be reversed. There is no appetite from the NRL to overturn the result which would have ramifications for the Cowboys top four hopes.

Chairman Hagipantelis informed the Tigers board of the meeting on Friday and will now allow them to consider if they want to pursue the matter further.
ARLC chairman Peter V’landys said he understood the Tigers’ frustrations but hoped they would not commence legal action.
“Tigers fans should be happy that lee and Justin prosecuted their case well,” V’landys said on Triple M. “We can understand their frustration and where they are coming from. But it sets an awful precedent to change a game and change the points. Otherwise you will be in court every second weekend.
“The referee makes mistakes and they usually even out in the match. There were probably other mistakes which impacted the Cowboys.”
The Tigers were beaten in the final second of the game against the Cowboys a fortnight ago when North Queensland were awarded a penalty following a successful captain’s challenge by the home side.
V’landys said the referral to the bunker caused the greatest angst for the Tigers.
“Was the captain’s challenge legal because of the challenge,” V’landys said “It’s a grey area. I heard (from) NRL management and the Tigers. I can see it’s a little bit ambiguous. We need to fix it and make the rule clearer. That’s what we will do at the end of the year.
“I’m confident the Tigers will accept the decision.”
The next step for the Tigers would be to pursue legal action and take the matter to court to chase the points. They hope to have a decision by Monday at the latest as they look for closure on the issue.
Prominent barrister Yaseen Shariff SC, has been engaged by the Tigers to explore their legal options.

No appetite from the NRL to overturn the result? Lee has the appetite and the means to devour the NRL in court. I would really love the boys to go into today's game knowing the real worth of two points.

I would imagine the NRL would have a strong legal team JR so being devoured might not be right, how about a severe thrashing by a feather.
This will be settled out of court imo.

Probably. If we apply enough pressure I think the NRL will compound. It's about time someone stood up to these stand over merchants. James Tamou won his 300th game, and it should say so in the records.

Just for the record I note it says that “ prominent barrister Yaseen Shariff SC has been engaged to explore the legal options”,
My information( which I thought was correct) was that it was Arthur Moses SC, however, if that’s wrong, I stand corrected, and apologise to all WTF members for advising incorrect information,
Will have to double check everything in future !
Go Wests Tigers !
