I like young Madden but perhaps the club is looking long term at Kade Hill as a better prospect? Sheens, Marshall and Farah are three great judges to have of football talent.
I actually don't mind Madden but at the sametime just don't see how he will add to any future success for us. He hasn't shown anything that steps out and says - he is a must to keep. He lacks the spark which translates into results.
We are coming dead last this year by 2 games. He has started 9 games this year including against the Warriors, Knights and Titans in which we struggled in each of those to score points (in games in which we really shouldn't have).
He is 16 games into his NRL career and if we are real, we just haven't seen improvements from him that is selling himself to us fans that he belongs.
Lets break the contract situation down.
In 23 we have Brooks, AD, Hastings, Peachey & probably Brown signed up. That's 5 roster spots for halves. Yes Peachey/Brown/Hastings/AD can play other positions but they can also cover halves as well. The cash invested in this area is huge. After 23 though they are all off contract which opens the door for massive cash investment within the market if we want.
Madden will be 23 when the 23 season starts, not a rookie or even young when it comes to NRL players these days. He will want a 2-3yr deal = 26yrs old at the end of it. Do we honestly see enough now to warrant us to hedge our bets he can lead us up the ladder?
The cash play isn't a concern here, we have cap space - it's the ability to move up the ladder & play finals and win. I just don't see Madden as the answer for us here.
