Flat Earth. Question for free thinkers of the forum....

When did you find Jordan? Amazing Man also Gabor Maté and Thomas Sowell.

Thomas Sowell will blow your socks off listen to him talking about Africa Americans in the 1960's and the democrats and what the democrats in general have done to Africa Americans is evil great man to listen to and would love to meet him in person

I hate all that right wing crap. The funny thing is I studied economics at uni and I'm pretty much a small government self directed person.

I think that basically all social issues are a lot more complex than what right wing morons state.

One principle I have though is that the vast majority of people can improve their lives via working hard themselves.

Sounds good but you have to have some standards or principles so that you don't get played. I try and read books or scientific papers or something like that.

I also try and read differing viewpoints. We were discussing Jordan Peterson on the politics thread. I read his books but then went out and sought differing viewpoints.

You need in depth details from trusted sources and even then you need to try and read alternative viewpoints.

My problem is that theories like the flat earth theory are clearly false and science can prove this wrong. There may be scientific papers that are peer reviewed that state the earth is flat but there will be a tonne more research that disproves that theory.

I read this book recently as well. It's freaken fantastic but you can even tell from the heading that it's good to have some doubt.
Mate watch the red bull special when they are up 110.000 feet without the fisheye lens it looks flat then just before the guy jumps and on the way up it's looking flat very interesting

But very interesting subject just love the off season

A friend of mine works in Canberra for the government and another local in Sydney and they both worked in the private sector before hand and both say they waste so much money and time small government will never happen they tried in Sydney before and there was a backlash from government employees

I have a better question

53 years ago it took Man 76 hours ( 3 days and 4 hours for you @hobbo1 ) to travel 384 399 kms to land on the Moon

53 years later it is going to take 7 to 10 working days to get my new airconditoner from Sydney to Gladstone .....and I'm not asking Neil Armstrong to personally deliver it and think of some catchy delivery slogan either

Should ask Buzz Aldrin. I’m sure he’s looking to get one up on Armstrong.

I don't really think it's possible to have a really small government. Capitalism has so many failures that require government intervention.

It becomes more a grey area about how big you want the government to be.

I suppose my younger ideas about less government intervention just don't work in reality.

It's not just backlash from government employees. It's our health care, our education, our infrastructure, legal system etc.

At the same time I think you should never try and rely on the government.

I’m all for free thinking and seeking scientific explanations for these phenomena are fine but there’s no discussion to be had on whether the earth is a sphere or “flat”.

I’m not a scientist but the my understanding is that the moon is visible from Earth because 1) we generally have an unobstructed view 2) it’s very big and 3) it reflects light from the sun. Certain objects on Earth that are large may not be visible to you because your view is obstructed or because the curvature of the Earth means it’s not in a direct sight line from you. As noted above, if the Earth was flat presumably we’d all be able to see the Himalayas with a decent telescope.

Anyone who asks questions about the curvature of the Earth, I suggest watching the first episode of Genius on National Geographic, it explains through practical experimentation by lay people who are not scientists how the Earth is spherical.

Fun fact courtesy of Neil deGrasse Tyson, the Earth is often referred to as an "oblate spheroid," in that it bulges out a little below the equator and is more of a slight pear shape. Although, if you were large enough for the Earth to be a comparable size to a billiard ball to an averaged human being and ran your finger over the top of the earth, it would feel perfectly smooth.

I really enjoyed that show.

Watching flat earth videos is fun and thought provoking. I don't get why people get so offended when someone suggests its flat. Who cares? Brings some mystery back into life.

Its not a theory, its a hypothesis.

Evolution and gravity are theories. (proven fact)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_theory
Not long ago they actually proved the speed of gravity accurately. 👍
For the "earth is flat" theorists, I always ask...if the world is flat, how thick is it?
Can I just ask our originator, when have you seen clouds behind the moon?
Has anyone else seen this phenomenon of the clouds? Am I missing something here? 🤔

Interesting questions TT, you could be onto something?
When I’m out on the water, with the weather forecast showing visibility clear and 14klms, how is it that I can see an island 45klms away?
I think the question you’re asking is “how much information do you need before forming an opinion or coming to a decision?”
