Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

I was TOTALLY against both of those guys going to the dumpster fire that is Newcastle. Pryce is very similar to his father, Leon, who was an outstanding athlete and high achiever in the SL. I'd say the son is possibly quicker and more explosive - but I'm not sure the game intelligence and intangibles are there - yet. Pearce-Paul is an absolute monster of a kid with freakish physical gifts. But he hasn't got his man body yet and consequently he's still finding his feet in the Wigan first team. It's not that I have a problem with talent going to the NRL at a very young age per se. But it has to be with a well-run team with a strong culture. The Knights are all kinds of bad for these two. For me the problems which Nathan Brown talked about just before he was canned (which Ponga and company - who really are calling the shots - derided him for in public) are as valid today as they've ever been. My fear is both of these kids' careers will be damaged. Would much prefer they'd gone to the Roosters or maybe the Storm.

Definately bro... agree %100 with
that post. They're still young though,
going to be 1 heck of an experience
for them up near nobby's beach haha

What are you talking about? He has
always stated, even at the height of
his career that he wanted to test
himself in union and be an all black.
Mediocre all blacks? Haha that will do
me. They've had some issues with their
coach but they're still elite, and centre
is a position they're stacked in fyi.
Nobody suggested spending $1.4
on him either, you shot 3 blanks bro
Yeah, players say a lot of things. And by any comparable metric the All Blacks are a mediocre team. They just got rolled at home - by IRELAND. And it wasn't a lucky win. They were completely outclassed. Throw in a ton of other mediocre performances recently and yes - this All Blacks team isn't fit to lace the boots of previous generations. And I'm not the person who said THIS ->>>>> "RTS must be the clubs next target. Worth every cent of $1.4m and is exactly the type of player the club needs"

The bottom line is, Moses signing or not signing makes no difference to our season this year. So we have plenty of time for the brain trust to come up with a plan for 2024 and beyond.

One thing for certain we need a class back in the spine who is not on the wrong side of the hill, if we are going to seriously climb the ladder.

I would even consider giving Laurie a shot at 7 if Brooks goes belly up again. That way you can have Staines at one or the young kid with all the wraps

That's my next option too if Brooks doesn't fire. I'm disappointed we didn't see any of Laurie's kicking game last Sunday when he moved to the halves. I know he has a good short kicking game, interested to see his long one.

Still have a feeling Dean Hawkins is future NRL 7 with a superb kicking game. He should be on the radar. I know Cody wants him to be the bunnies 7 rather than Ilias.

Not being a native of Australia I just don't get why the Knights always seem to possess one of the worst cultures in the NRL. Players constantly getting caught up in off-the-field problems. Even when they were at their peak they always seemed to be lurching from one disaster to the next. Andrew Johns papered over a lot of cracks.

still can't understand why they'd extend Brooks for a further two years when we haven't even seen him play this year under Sheens.

That means if we are going terribly after ten rounds this year - we will have another two and a half year of brooks.

Surely if there is no one else to sign we may as well wait until mid year.

It would be better and more astute to sign luke brooks half way through the year for more money IF he is having a blinder... than sign him now for another 2 years (still he'd be getting decent money - or for that matter any money) and have him stick around for another two years with all the bad press and media we are going to cop if he doesn't perform.

My bad, I missed that post haha.
Ireland are No.1 in the world man,
top team - all blacks fell off a bit
but still there abouts. I respect Ur
opinion though, let's see how it all
pans out this year with us first ...
I'm lowkey quitely confident we
do okay and are at least building

The Pom mentioned 2 years. That isn't that bad. I'd like to see us tie up Doueihi for that time or longer as well.

The issue is there is no one to target. We can try for juniors or guys that are good in reserves but it's hit and miss.
There's options to target. Dodd from St Helens, Williams at Wigan, Pezet at Storm

Farnworth is a very good player. Staggs gets all of the headlines - not least because he's incredibly explosive and a handful for defenders. But in terms of winning intangibles - Farnworth all day every day. When he first went to the Broncos I kind of worried that his football background would leave him constantly trying to catch up. He took a pounding in his first full season in what was a very poor team riddled with internal problems. But ever since he reached physical maturation he's been immense. Quick. Powerful. Outstanding defender and a win-at-all-costs mentality. Definitely the kind of player I'd be looking at to lift the culture.

Are you from the UK? To be honest
with you Newcastle is a small town,
a lot of eyes and expectation are on
the club. Not a lot to do our there either
haha. @Demps is from Newy, he would
probably be able to explain much better

I'm from Newy. Big reason is that Newy is far enough away from the prying eyes of the Sydney Journos, whilst the local Journos know that the club will freeze them out if they report anything negative. Been like it for 30 years and Johns got away with Blue Murder which entrenched the culture

You might struggle to get Williams. Ricky Stuart really did a number on that kid. The way he and the club fed their mates in the media (Kenty, in particular) a stream of negative headlines about George (who had been living away from home for a long time with a young kid on the way) was scandalous. I lost a lot of respect for Sticky on that one. Remember, the stories were so bad his teammates were forced to take unprecedented steps to attack their own club. Wouldn't be surprised if Williams is scarred for life. Dodd will definitely come to the NRL. I know this for a fact. He's made no secret about it. Top, top class player. Maybe the best scrum half I've seen coming out of the UK in thirty years. He's nearly two years younger than Welsby and yet he plays like a veteran. To give you an idea about his influence - St. Helens went from an average winning margin of +20 points to +6 immediately after he ruptured his Achilles. I was extremely worried about what impact that injury would have on him - but he went straight into the Panthers game after nine months out and looked as good as ever. We were "fortunate" he suffered that horrific injury just after he turned 20 while the body still has peak blood circulation to the legs and those growth hormones are still flowing. Had he suffered it five years later - big problems. The upshot is that Achilles probably set Dodd's NRL plans back by a year or so. He'll want to get at least one or two seasons of top form into his game in SL so he can maximise his earning potential. Coming over now wouldn't be a good idea.

@THE_POM isaac moses plays Pascoe again?

How else can club justify signing brooks on a 2 yr extension before a ball has been kicked and we haven’t played finals in 9 years of him playing half back?

In what world does that make sense?

Just means we no longer are going to be looking at other half options which may or may not come up in the next year…. As we all know players break contracts / get home sick / want more money / fall out with coaches etc …

Why not wait until round 8 at least to sign brooks?

Even if ISaac is telling the club he has offers elsewhere - if brooks loves the club surely we have a bit of leverage and if not move on.

I’d rather sign brooks in round 8 for $850k per year for two years knowing he was succeeding and playing well rather than sign him now for $650k for two years and take the risk by round 8 he’s still not performing….. and that’s assuming we signed him now for circa $650k (you can bet we paid more and that’s not even the point)

Pascoe is honestly isaac moses golden ticket b*tch…. Isaac moses probably loves negotiating with the tigers. He gets everything he wants. Gus could picked it early.

The biggest problem with our halves isn't their footballing ability, it's decision making and execution under extreme pressure. Moses would not have fixed that, he would have only improved it slightly. Is that worth 1.3m? Not in my opinion.

Brooks and Doueihi will do well in general, and at times be fantastic. I do fear those high pressure moments though. But how many halves out there nail those moments? Not many.
And that's the thing .people are saying brooks will be better behind a better forward pack . Over the nine years there have been countless games that our forward pack has matched the opposition and we have came out with the loss. Decision making with pressure is not Luke Brooks best thing .

You realise we only really got on top once they took off their starters and we kept ours on. Context is huge. The first 20 mins we were pretty awful generally speaking, a better side would have put 20 on us. Our goal line defence was improved, but they didn't throw a lot at us either

We have better forwards now, yes, but if they're coached to stand still in the defensive line and let players run at them at full speed while they're back pedalling then we'll still be spoon contenders. Line speed is what will see us avoid another bottom 4 season
Agree 100% with what you are saying.

After seeing what Titans showed a bit later in the day on Sunday had me far from convinced that round 1 is 2 competition points in the bag like some on here are suggesting.

Very hard to determine how teams are going to go based on trial form, but with Brooksy, Offa and Api to still come back into the team there is some hope that given a few competition rounds for combination to gel under "real match" conditions we can hopefully end up being competitive and consistent.

Just hope that the Injury Gods and match officials who at times think they are God, are kind to us this season.

We should look at other options. I really hope we don't give away a stupid contract. A reasonable 2 year contract probably isn't that bad though. Hopefully that is the worst case option right now.

Get your frustrated but Sheens and Benji call the roster and recruiting shots not Pascoe.
