I agree with just about all that has been said thus far, with one exception; I think the major issue with scoring is as much to do with the attacking structures as it is the halves there to execute them.

It smacks of running a new software upgrade on an older computer that can't handle it.

Play to your strengths; Collapse the middle with the pack, draw in the edges, up the offloads and second phase, zero in on support around the ruck as the game wears on and compete on every kick.

This would be our best attacking approach this year.

We seem to get down the other end quite well with the pack we have but come up short for points all the time. If they can master the grubber in goal and aim for repeat sets and tire the opposition surley it would increase the chance of converting to points. I know brooks can't kick but they should assess all the players kicking abilities and see who has the touch.

I'd like to see cross field kicks for tupou cas he's taller then most wingers that seems like a no brainer

We have one of the best bomb kickers in doueihi. Surely he can teach brooks or wakem how to do those monsters or get pat Richards in. Even his kick-offs would be handly.

Can we get some ideas together and send it to timji it can't hurt

Brooks most certainly can kick.

Biggest issue I see in the red zone is no one is compressing the middle before we go to on edge. We did this a little with those old school run arounds from dummy half a few weeks ago, but that's not sustainable IMO as teams will work that our pretty quick.

We desperately need to work on someone who can do what Elijah Taylor did, play straight and deep into the line bringing 3 middle defenders into him before promoting it out to Brooks with square shoulders. Not many can pass well square onto the defence, but it can be worked on.

Papalii, Seyfarth and Matamua seem to be the only options for this, but one is on an edge, and the other two not in the team.
This is the major roadblock in the 20. They do it so well up the field, then get too lateral in the red zone.

2/3 plays with a straight crash ball, a drop under Api or face ball to one of Twal, Stef, Klem, Pole or Papali'i, consecutively, will cause a mountain of compression in the middle, collapse the edges, open up the 3/4 line for a backline swing and even occasionally result in a direct try from one of the big boys.

Time and space is most at a premium in the opposition's 20. The best teams create the most time and/or space and then run their plays to capitalise. That's where we're falling down.

@king_sirro said the same thing. We need to try and play up the middle with offloads and speed players supporting around the ruck. Attacking on the edges with IP and Bateman is a good idea as well. If we draw the defense into the middle and then go to the edges we will score more points.

This team is only starting to develop though. Maybe it's going to take some time. I know that sucks to hear.

And the week before against Manly for the Koroisau try.
So, why did we stop doing something which produces results?
Is Sheens taking a back seat?
Did the board screw things up again by overriding Sheens’ positional authority by replacing McDonnell?

I think you need to assess our attack pre-bye and post-bye. before the bye it was rather expansive but we had a tendency to make errors, but you could see the shapes were there. this for mine (https://shorturl.at/QX146) is the best example of what our attack can be. players in motion, options everywhere and our spine players biting deep into the line to create space for those outside. this here (https://rb.gy/74fcl) is vintage 2010-11 Wests Tigers shape. I don't think we've seen it once in the regular season.

post-bye, its been run arounds, basic block shapes and an emphasis on field position. given the defensive strength of the team, it makes sense, but we've completely changed our tack as a result.

I believe the coaching staff have made the observation that our current spine, sans Api, is unable to execute the shapes to the standard they would've liked them to, hence why they've been shelved and there has been a focus on high completions and defence. the pursuit of Moses, Pearce, Williams and now Johnson is fairly clear, we're looking for a halfback that will see the cues onfield and call the play when it is required. we're playing to the cattle we have, not the cattle we want.

this isn't a knock on Brooks, I just think he's a 6. I wouldn't be surprised to see us play tough and through the middle for the remainder of the season until we sign a halfback that can play to the attacking standard required, given how complex a lot of the shapes are. I also think that they are being very patient with Justin Matamua and ensuring that he is completely ready for first grade before getting him to effectively run the middle corridor with Api.

once the changes at 7 and 13 are made, whether its this year or next, you're going to see a very different attacking output.

  • Get the halves playing wider with a 13 that can pass
  • More early ball to our centres and wingers
  • Get deeper
  • Kick early for Bula and co when fullback is in the line
  • Api to kick more when 5-10 metres out

I haven't looked at it again, but others are talking about him not passing to Bula. Was he an option, as I didn't see him as one live?
Apologies, Bula was an option to his right. He came on late. Don't know what happened there? It looked like Api called for it, Brooks was committed, then Bula called. Not sure if Bula did call? Brooks didnt look to his right.

I think you are 100% on the money. Our attack has been stripped back to basics and we are playing to the capabilities of the cattle we have available. I trust that this is simply the start of the rebuilding process. Being able to deliver the shape needs the execution of basic plays first. I don't expect our current halves pairing to execute plays off the cuff but we can improve on what we have by creating opportunites for second phase play.

If we can continue to execute in the high 80% and better, and the combinations develop, one or two simple enhancements to what we are currently doing will improve our second phase chances significantly.

Bula sniffing around the middle is a good sign of developing combinations. We need to do more of it off the back of some good lines from ICE, Bateman and Klemmer. Add Matamua in at 13 later in the season and we should improve further.

Quick play the balls, make meters.

More set plays off the scrum.

After a quick play the ball, have a set play where 3 attackers, 1 forward, 1 edge forward and half/fullback in the middle. Forward passes to Edge forward before engaging in the line, attracting defender 1, edge forward attracts defender 2 and passes to the half/fullback slotting through the hole. Typical in and out.

Only way I could see this happening is Pole runs it first, passes to Papali/Bateman and Brooks/Bula in the middle.

I do feel we need to spread the ball across the field alot more, we haven't seen Tupou receive the ball in a few games (Talau the dog).

Also, it seems that Brooks/Wakes tend to favour the left hand side.. pretty predictable.

Brooks needs to dig into the to get smashed, but again, needs someone running off him.

Trust their kicks on the last play in the opposition 20.. who cares if you get a 7 tackle set, trust the team.

I'm sure there's a number of things but a 5/8 with more speed, with a good passing game that can really dig into the defensive line

Why do we need so many crash balls, let’s have 3/4/5 attacking plays in the 20 or 30. We tend to go for the all or nothing 4th or 5th tackle play, so easy to read.
And still a lot of 5 tackle then a high kick, and our kick chase is mediocre at best. What about kicking on the deck between fb and winger. Strong defence and keep ‘em pinned.
