Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

if we lose wakeham we are in trouble we don't have much backup
Wouldn't think we would lose Wakes, unless we wanted to...

Despite him being solid for us, not many clubs would he lining up... and that's fine.

I feel he's earned an extension.
He's better than Will Smith, Laurie, Pellow, etc.

He deserves an extension but not as the premier half salary or length. Would come down to how much other clubs are offering and probably more importantly the contract length.

Considering he was weeks away from being out of the NRL for good can imagine if we offered a 1yr deal and another club offered a 3yr term he would jump at the 3yrs.

Daddy’s keeping him in the game, he’ll get found out at Manly

His brother in junior graded is better but Jake isn’t terrible as a backup option. Need to remember he is 20, made his debut as an 17/18yr old.

Not a bad pickup for Manly.

Parra won on the roster move with Tracey inbound especially if they get Joffa.

I'd give Wakes 2 years on $220k. more than proved himself as a backup half for the next few years and could even play a bigger role than that.

For those who focus on these things, what’s the initial reaction to our new Reggie, Pellow ?
Any signs of talent etc ?
Apart from the announcement, as Sergeant Schultz would say “ I know nuzzing” !
It's too soon to write off a guy fresh to the club. He's thrown a couple of beautiful short balls to put his outside man through gaps but his defence is ordinaryand he can disappear in games.
But lets give the kid until the end of the season to feel like he belongs before making a judgement on him.
(not that I'm saying you have.)

I think the length is right but normally for a backup expected to spend most the time in reserves they would be on minimum mixed with nrl incentives (match / metric payments).

For anyone questioning what Schuster brings go watch the game against Canberra

Personally don't think he's a 6, I see a really big future for him as a 13 and believe he'll be the best ball playing lock in the whole league if he makes the transition. Defensively on the edge he gets found out a little bit, but he isn't a bad defender just reads outside plays inconsistently.

Schuster's ball playing and his ability to square up defenders is the best I've seen from a big fella - for example Turbo has been struggling all year but the way Schuster created space on the outside for Turbo to capitalise he scored a hat trick off it and made that whole team flow.

Brooks and Bula would reap the most benefits off this, as their players who can play in front of them and thrive off open space. On top of that with the emergence of Tupou, Nofa and To'a some open space for them especially with their ability to beat defenders and give them as many 1 on 1 opportunities would be surreal.

All we'd need is a game managing 7 next to them to steer the team around - personally think Luke Metcalf is a hidden gem but would prefer us to get on the phone to Ben Hunts manager before Gould gets there if he isn't already

Could argue as a 7 we're much more appealing than the dogs

- our pack is better
- playing next to Api will be appealing for a half
- a 7 playing under Benji with Sheens's experience in the background compared to an unproven inexperienced coach
- The fit is better with Brooks as he can play a running 6 role and take some kicks giving Hunt majority of the control, whereas next to Burton it'll be a little confusing in terms of who wants the ball/ running the show and who takes last tackle options etc

If we keep winning games and show some fight.... Hunt could be a real option

1. Bula
6. Brooks
7. Hunt
9. Api
13. Schuster

top 4 spine imo

Big point there is that he is 20. He is never going to be an elite 7, but he plays with great composure for a kid, has a good kicking game and is taking the line on more and more with his larger frame.

I expect him to be a reasonable NRL 7 by 22, and most likely a very good ball playing lock by 26 when he fills out.

I don't get the hate for him. When put into perspective, he has a reasonable career ahead of him.

yeah I think he has improved his game a bit over the last 12 months, still he is not our answer and we already have a hand full of average halves don't we?

I meant if he is injured mate
agree worth an extension for sure

Just on the Joffa situation "Lee Hagipantelis on Joe Ofahengaue: There were preliminary discussions, but Joe had not been released and he has still not been released."
I wonder if another solution has been found a bit like we did with Rowdy, he's only 27 clearly drives a culture with our Islander contingent maybe we put forward an extra year last year being close to minimum wage but spread the other 2 yrs across those 3 yrs. So will only be 30-31 by the end of that deal and is on a tick over $400 a year over that time.

Wakeham should be re-signed for sure. He's proven you can win with him at NRL level. In fact, we've won 3 of the last 4 with him there and just put up 66 points in a game where he played extremely well. Very hand goal kicker too.

I don't think he's a long-term solution (mind you he could improve with age), but with him you're carrying one of the best backups in the league and a guy who could start for a couple of teams at any given time. Extremely valuable player to have in case of injury.

I thought Joffa had signed with Parra for 2024, but we are entertaining the possibility of an easy release this season?

That would be embarrassing, Lee and Justin are not part of the football department and have no business being involved in any discussions about the squad
Maybe Sheens and Tartak don't see eye to eye .....hopefully there is a logical reason ...probably not ...but maybe lol
