Joe Ofahengaue #240

Look I get the sentiment and I love both Joffa and Elijah Taylor.
Yet...

EJ was done. He was well and truly done and useless the last year we had him. Hey no problems, he was concussion hit.

Likewise I think Joffa has just been through too much here. I can't blame him... He tried his guts out and we got the wooden spoon. Outstanding forward, but I could just get that his hope may be gone.

Both will be missed, but I get a sense that Sheens wants the squad looking forward and Paps/Bateman will be focused on winning and building. Joffa is year 3-4 of Loosing and building so perhaps he is too much to turn around.
More to do with 600k for a bench front rower I think. Him and Twal are similar and Twal has improved alot. If we had Pole and Twal off the bench and Blore at lock. We wouldn't be that bad.

It's ok to be getting / saving all this money for Jo ....but if they don't sign an upgrade on Jo in a position of need it is a waste and the club looks like fools again ...Frizzle isn't an upgrade

Agree to an extent, though you have to factor in how his cap money is spent in 24 and 25 too. You could argue he could be offloaded later, but if the buyer is motivated, timing is important.

Given you need 30 players by end of June, all should be clear in a few weeks.

Clear as mud . ..if this was Top 4 side and they had made a similar move the upgrade would be done and dusted ....I bet we pull someone from the KOE F Troop misfits

Its true other clubs like Storm, SOuths etc would keep someone like joffa around. However those clubs would have him on no more than 350k, which is probably about his real value for a solid, no frills, unspectacular prop. But we got hoodwinked into paying 600k+ while his stocks were high and ours were low.

To me i'd be happy if he stayed if he agreed to terminate his contract and draft up a new team friendly one. But he would be sacrificing a fair bit of cash which he is rightfully owed if he did that.

That’s crap we got heaps of cap this year and next year we got plenty of players off contract so this crap about we need cap to keep kids who are only going to get a small rise anyway
Well, Klemmer, Stefano, Ice and Bateman all reportedly on 650k (or thereabouts). Add Joffa in on $650k. That’s $3.25m on 5 players in your starting pack. Spine players are the most expensive these days so you have to add those in. The way Bula, Pole, Toa and Tupou are playing they will need upgrades and extensions (which would be well deserved imo). That’s before you consider being able to pay our star juniors enough to retain them.

Look, I am Ok with retaining Joffa but I can absolutely understand the logic around releasing him now and I am ok with that too.

Ok I see ur reasoning here , but if we were willing to fork out 1.4 million for Moses then we gave enough to cover everything , remember we have quite a few of contract at the year of this year as well

I get it, but someone approved this contract months ago, something is wrong with the joint

One thing to keep in mind regarding star juniors. Often they are significantly over paid in their first contract because they are getting paid on potential rather than performance. Further, there is normally a strong market for them because teams down the bottom of the table are looking for saviours which also drives up their price. Remember, we agreed to pay Stefano ~$300k (or a tad under) before he’d even played first grade. The knights paid Kalyn Ponga $750k, Joseph Sualii is already on $700k this year.

So some of our juniors might not be as cheap as you think. Especially Bula as he’s a spine player. The good thing is we already have all of them under contract for the next two years (I believe) so we have some leverage to upgrade the dollars in the contracted years in exchange for the players signing on for a couple of additional years.

Club should change their mind, we have no one better for this season. If at seasons end you find a better alternative then go for it, I'm sure Joe's form will improve by then and you will have no problems offloading him given parra want him now even during a lean patch.
