Restructure the Ladder?

Okay, so maybe it's just me, but it annoys me looking at the ladder and having to factor in actual games played and byes had to get the "real" way it is being shaped.

The fixture is set so badly! We are about half way through the season and there are teams who've played 12, 13 and 14 games. A two game difference is huge and I think the ladder positions are warped because of it.

For example (using only the top two), Penrith is at the top of the table due to for and against, yet they've only played 12 games for their 20pts: 8 wins and 2 byes. Yet second placed Brisbane has played 14 games for 20pts: 10 wins, no byes.

So Brisbane is guaranteed another 4 points due to byes, whereas Penrith are not guaranteed to win both games they play on these Brisbane bye weeks.

I think that it would be more accurate to show the ladder in order of winning percentage (then for and against). It would be:

1. Brisbane P 14 W 10 L 4 B 0 Pts 20 Percentage 71%
2. Penrith P 12 W 8 L 4 B 2 Pts 20 Percentage 67%

I think it's a valid issue, as there could be instances such as a team being at the bottom even though they're only there because teams above them have had byes and they haven't yet.

It's deceptive, and people don't look at the ladder and think... anything other than where the teams are shown.

The only time in the entire season the ladder is completely accurate is when the very last game has been played.

Anyway... you get the point. Or 2 points if you've got the bye for this thread!

Agree this 17 teams make it difficult to make sense of the tables .This year everyone gets 3 byes vs 1 last year .some have had 2 already some have had none
The sooner we get to 18 teams ( 9 matches per round ) the better
Word is PNG will get a team and it will be a club team not a national team like the warriors so they could recruit from here and pacific as well as their own

Ladder pretty easy to follow but pretty hard to
project tbh. U.S. sports are harder to follow and
easier to project, generally speaking. Lucky we
don't have have conferences & divisions haha

Yes it’s confusing. Effectively we are equal last due to the Dragons having one less bye, however sit in 16th due to superior for and against.
They play Rabbits this week, we play Titans.
A win for us and a loss for them gives us breathing space from the spoon.

Whenever I check the ladder I sort if via the number of wins. That makes it more accurate.

Simplest answer ....no points for byes
It would be more accurate, but still deceptive. The points would be correct against wins, but teams would still have games in hand.

The only way is to have 18 teams and all byes in the same rounds…preferably during origin period.

The bye sucks

If they do this they're stupid.
Or maybe just not into the NRL enough to know the schedule.

Visual perception is incredibly impactful, and someone casually looking at the table will process and retain the simplest, most prominent or "important" information far more than any other.

Statistics are visually manipulated (e.g., graphs) all the time preying on this.

In this case it is simply the ladder position.

Ask anyone where their team is coming and they'll tell you. But it's convoluted and sounds equivocal to say "well, they're coming 8th, but they've played one less game...".

Still, as previously mentioned, it could be like the nfl, so it could be worse!

That’s how the ladder is shown in American football and seems to make sense.
