Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Clifford started ok at the Knights then fell if a cliff and was useless.
Maybe it was something to do with the Knights, as Jessie Raimen had the same problems there.
I’d be very cautious signing Clifford, we’ve been burned before with these players.
Yeah I'd be keen to know what our regular SL watchers think of Clifford's performances this season?
@ovoevo

He's got the talent, got the experience but whether he has the mental resilience to lead a team around the park in the NRL with the media scrutiny that comes with it.

Know bugger all about Fulton, but it seems he knows what's required, he has identified players we have said for ages need to be moved on, but needs to replace them with better signings, that's the challenging part.
Blinded Freddy could identify the crap we need to move on , but he’s here to bring talent in can’t see any been brought in , is he waiting for the Boxing Day sales at meyers before getting busy 🤪

Oh yeah Staines will have interest but at a different price point i dare say. He'll drop to a 350k player
Poor old Doueihi had no luck with injury. 3 knee reconstructions and being a young man he must be considering medical retirement. He wants quality of life after his football career and I feel sorry for him this has happened. I'm sure he will make the best decision for himself with the support of family and friends.

I think that is a high exaggeration.

Yes Dogs outbid Tigers in certain situations, but losing out on a signature is not necessarily about being out-manoeuvred, it may simply be a matter of price. I personally think, and I said this in the past 2 seasons, that Dogs are repeating the mistakes the Tigers made when Ivan joined 2017 and we signed several mid-tier players on high salaries. Those salaries weighed us down long-term and the incoming coach had different ideas that he couldn't properly execute until those contracts were shed.

History has proven that Dogs signed a turkey with TPJ, though we have no idea how he may have performed at Tigers, the non-speculative data available says signing TPJ was actually a loss to the Dogs (and a predictable loss).

It remains very much to be seen whether Ciraldo can in fact coach first grade and he's signed to a big long-term deal, i.e. they are stuck with him (same as Tigers with Benji, to be fair).

2023 Dogs have now recruited some very significant players - Burton, Mahoney, Kikau, TPJ, JAC... but it's not currently working out for them in any meaningful progression.

The ace up the sleeve for the Dogs is Phil Gould, who is very shrewd and has a lot of clout in the game, both media and off-football ops. However Phil Gould alone isn't a panacea and he does not create rapid success everywhere he is employed.

On the other hand, Dogs appear to have very shallow juniors depth, and the juniors they have blooded, the likes of Averillo, Biondi-Odo, Alamoti, are alarmingly average. In that regard I think Tigers are advantaged with stronger juniors and a dedicated Pathways Team.

Since Dogs last played finals 2017, their average table position is 13th and ours is 12th. Currently obviously we are last and they are slightly ahead of us 15th, one of their 5 wins coming at our expense (i.e. we win that game and we are both on 4 wins all year).

So are the Dogs ahead of us by available measures of on-field success? Yes certainly, they are marginally ahead. They lost by a slightly less horrific margin last weekend, against an arguably far less dangerous side.

Are they "so far ahead of WT"? No I don't think there's much basis to make such a claim. But as I said, I've been arguing against Bulldogs comparisons for about 2 years now. The Dogs are still yet to do anything particularly impressive with all the strategy changes they've made and money they've spent. I think they have a thoroughly unimpressive team.

Lastly, and this is not the argument you are making, but it's part of the overall conversation about the Bulldogs nonetheless - if fans are measuring success by marginal advantages over the worst team in the comp (us) then they are setting a horrendously low bar. I think Bulldogs fans are a million miles off where they want to be, and they are not thinking about the Tigers when judging progress.
Have the WT been paying you to write this sorta stuff recently?
You're putting so much spin on a lemon, being WT obviously, politicians of every colour would be impressed.
But in saying that I usually enjoy reading your posts, as You're one of the best contributors on here.

If they don’t hurry up there will be need for a early release, the season will be over, and I see the knights grabbed the young manly centre that we were supposed to get , so well done Fulton , so far u have done bugger all , except create so called disharmony within the club , I hope we haven’t payed u any money so far , because haven’t earn a cent so far
Fletcher Myers was a Newcastle junior … simply went home.

He’s still fresh because he played about 6 games in 3 years here on about $400 000 per game. I think he’s over getting cat fished too.
I still feel sorry for Josh re "getting cat fished". I hope he has been able to move on with his life and find that genuine love of having a family he was searching for.

What's wrong with Staines? He's hard working, consistent, fast, versatile and played well for us. Sure, none of those things are Tigers DNA but why does club not rate him? Obviously he's a little undersize but there are smaller, less physical wingers out there and this week we're starting kepaoa there, so we're not flush with choices.

600k is a lot of money to just pay someone out. Let alone the remainder of the year. He won’t want to retire so it’s coming off the cap too.
With the players cleared off the books and potential salary cap space in 2023 could we perhaps pay out Douehi’s 2024 contract this year and buy out his contract? Would that free up both cap space and a top 30 position for recruitment in 2024?

Sorry if this had already been covered in the thread.
