Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Sezer certainly demonstrated his bag of tricks in that highlight package. What a great long pass he has. Is he a good defender ?
Hoping he’ll do a Shaun Johnson for us. Short term contract will keep him interested if he wants to extend his time in the NRL.

Chammas tonight in the SMH:

The Herald has been told that assistant coaches Sam Burgess and John Morris are aligned in their concerns over the way Mitchell and Walker are being managed.

The club has indicated that it would not stand in Morris’ way if he decided to take up an opportunity as Benji Marshall’s assistant at the Wests Tigers next year.
I think Morris (and even Carr from saints I read) would be great assistants to Benji, if that’s who HE wants. If they succeed, they’ll make Benji look good and take a lot of the credit for it, enhancing their coaching credentials.

Can you blame them?
His efforts or lack there of can make a bloke sick…
Some of the clips they ran on 360
Tonight we’re putrid.
I like how they made mention that LMit gets preferential treatment at South’s…
I was under the assumption it was NRL wide? Bloke is the biggest grub going and they’re all too scared to pull him up - as he’ll label it racism or some such.
Can’t stand him… just a loud mouth bludger
I’m going to call this as I see it…LM knows he can pull the race card anytime it gets hot in the kitchen…so he plays it to his advantage…and gets away with it..he is a grub on the field, just ask Joey Manu

Been saying for ages Mitchell is lazy and only puts in near or during origin and his milestone game. He's a shit fullback.

And it's an indictment on 2023 western society that anyone has virtually total immunity from criticism simply because of skin colour. People can't say the objective truth or completely unbiased opinions without fear of mass backlash in the online or public realm.

I'm by no measure racist, nor do I give two craps about what anyone chooses to do in thier bedroom (ffs, it's none of my business and I don't care!). As far as I'm concerned it's the human race.

I don't know Mitchell personally, but as a league player and public figure, I don't care for him at all.

Although I do have to thank him for one thing: I didn't realise the great significance riding quad bikes on the beach was to indigenous culture before he did it....

Fitness is Trell’s problem. He has very little endurance that is needed to play no1. His assets are based around his power game but he can only produce them in short bursts. Good teams work him out and run him around. He gets tired and frustrated and his game goes to pot.

Put him back on a edge and you will see a different player

Good observations SC.

I agree re fitness. That 12 week stint on the sidelines for a "minor calf strain" derailed Souths. Clearly the diagnosis was rubbish and something else was going on. If one our players had a grade one calf and spent 3 months out i'd want to sack the medical staff.

How good is Manly? Re-signs Schuster only months ago for $800k a season and now potentially looking to flick him, with an estimated freight payable of $300k annually. That's how you completely mess up your salary cap!

*That's even worse than signing Joffa 6 months prior to releasing him and paying him $150k a year for the next 3 years.

*If reports are true.

So if we pick him up for $500k that is good business! 😁 It probably indicates the Eagles are having difficulties balancing the cap and retaining a player they want to keep.

Broncos are reportedly trying to upgrade some of their younger players but there doesn't appear to be enough cash for Corey Oates. The Knights are interested which is great because Oates has been good but his best days are imo behind him.

What's an indictment on 2023 western society is that there are already three comments on this thread focused on Mitchell's race. Why has his race got anything to do with what he's like as a footballer? And how come, in this thread where we're commenting about media stories criticising Mitchell, so many people feel the need to immediately note that we're not allowed to criticise Mitchell because of his race?

If you people are all as blind to race as you claim to be, why mention it at all?

Here's my view: Mitchell is a phenomenal talent who seems to have real trouble delivering on a consistent basis and who it certainly seems may lack application. It now seems his current club may - though this is all based on rumour and media coverage, which of course we are all rightly dubious about - have badly mishandled him, in a way that amplifies rather than moderates his professional issues. See? Not hard, is it? Am I going to be arrested by the racism police?

Great post.

100%.
I actually got into some heated debates earlier in the year about this very topic.
He is not a consistent creative. He should not be in the spine.
He is an impact player who injects himself at the right moments and has the power and skill to be very damaging when this occurs.
His best position is centre and it always has been.

Souths are imploding. That doesn't just happen. 2 x journo's + Braith openly talking about issues at the club. Rumours of Wighton backflipping.

Now the question- do Souths back the coaches or the players?
From what i have read the coach is part of the problem - even his own coaching staff have complained of double standards for Mitchell and Walker that have a lot of players offside.

Were Tracey and Iro at the sharks when John Morris was there?
The Brailey bros, Xerri, Flanagan came through in his U20s team.

This quote from Morris in The Leader is illuminating -

"Then went on to Tim Sheens at the Tigers and I think that block in my career really lit a spark with the science of coaching. I saw what those coaches could do with a footy team and they improved me so much as a player. Without those guys I don't go on and play 300 games.

I learnt early there is a certain way you apply yourself at training in your preparation, listen to your coach, out into play what they're saying through the week you can be a pretty handy footy player. So I learnt to be a coachable player and then that relationship I had with my coaches kind of just evolved.

The Sharks were supportive of me with a transition plan post footy. My last game was only in May and then I went straight into elite development roles at the club zo that's where it's all come from."

Unfortunately,
The Hype train (And dollars) that come with him means no one can afford to play him in the centres....
...and this was part of the argument.
He could win Souths far more games as a centre than as a fullback. That to me makes him a commercially valuable centre.
Rugby League people have fallen into a trap of assigning money based upon position. Some of the backlash concerning the Tino and Haas contracts were that they are "too much coin for a prop". What the hell does this mean? Despite being the hardest position on the field to play, those two guys are easily within the TOP 10 PLAYERS in the comp/world. Their impact is immense. They affect the outcome of games. They should be rewarded financially for being so. Same goes for Latrell. Id pay him more to play in the centres than I would at the back simply because he provides more high quality output there.
