Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Young gun playmaker Latu Fainu is off to the Wests Tigers and he finished up his time in the Manly system playing centre. The 18-year-old has played nine NSW Cup games this season and all have been in the halves, but moved to centre for the elimination final to make room for Cooper Johns and Schuster. Fainu finished with a linebreak, a linebreak assist, three tackle busts and 199 running metres. He struggled defensively though with nine tackles and six misses. I know he was playing out of position, Fulton said he is ready for 1st grade, 6 missed tackles, I dont think so.
Didn't watch the game but can't assess defence purely on stats line. Not all missed tackles are created equal. A missed tackle where you stop the opponent but drop off before others finish him, or rush up to turn a player back inside or shooting out looking to stop progress against a bunched attack knowing there is more than enough defensive pressure behind to cover you are All acceptable but recorded as a miss.

Just thinking, what do you reckon if we recruit 2 new solid experienced centres and move T'oa to the wing?

He's good under the high ball, a powerful runner, good fend & fast.

A 3/4 line of T'oa, Gagai, Tass, Tupou would give us a much better look especially in defence.
To'a is not good under the high ball. That was one of the reasons he was moved from wing in the first place.

He was playing outside of Schuster.

He's the #7 in these highlights^, playing left centre.

Samuela is the #11, playing left second row.
Not a lot of highlights of either Fainu - Latu looked quick, Samuela looked ordinary in defence. The 2 who stood out for Blacktown were Weekes and Schuster. Schuster could be anything if he knuckled down.

It will be interesting who Sticky selects for Canberra to replace Kris on the wing. Will it be Schiller or Savage? Whoever misses out may want to look elsewhere for a better chance at NRL in '24!

I mentioned in a post yesterday that it will be important for Fulton to nail our Train & Trial & wider NSW Cup recruits in the off-season as well as NRL squad.

I reckon it will be players with experience, leadership & strong work ethic both on-field & training to help develop our core of youngsters likely to play Cup next season to expose them to week-in-week-out rigours of playing against men.

With no injuries, I think our NSW Cup should look something like this ...

1 Naden (yes played fullback for Penrith in JF & provides experience & voice)
2 Lobb (from Dragons) / Ngutlik / Jordan Hill
3 Feledy
4 Reilly
5 Nofoaluma (unless we can offload him)
6 Latu Fainu
7 RECRUIT (hopefully Dean Hawkins or Kurt Falls)
13 Kit Laulilii
12 Tumeth
11 Samuela Fainu
10 Faagutu
9 Da Silva
8 RECRUIT (someone like a Morgan Boyle or we can retain Aitasi James on T&T)

Bench - Mansfield, Valevatu, Tofaeno,

Also recruit another experienced fullback just on a Cup contract (like a Jake Toby) & middle (like a Kane Evans) & back-up hooker just on Cup contracts for depth and experience.

Schuster looks like a man playing against u8s. Sublimely gifted. As big as a house though.

Weekes looks sharp. Not much of him though hey.

Xavier Savage can’t make 1st Grade?! Lol

How annoying was the commentators rough blokey voice

There were some great passes from Schuster to open up the Raiders' defence. Kao Weekes also looked dangerous with the ball,

Highlights is the only way to think Josh Schuster was good - In the game he failed to find touch with 2 penalties, he threw stupid passes, he was slow in defence leaving his outside men in trouble (the cause of a number of Fainu';s missed tackles). His good was brilliant as it should be playing NSW Cup but his bad was equally horrible.

I wonder if we'll make a play for Bayley Sironen to return home to be our utility (hooker/2nd row/lock even 5/8 & centre) especially if we goodbye to Jake Simpkin & AJ Kepaoa (hopefully).

This is the problem with highlights. Good feedback as well.

Exactly. Schuster is a classic highlights player. All flash, no consistency. Brooks was too to an extent.
Throw a nice pass or make a nice run here or there for an assist, which make the highlights, but then go missing and take a thousand bad options otherwise. Scoring once or twice means nothing if a halves' decision making mean you're under the pump for much of the game...

With Matamua and Sullivan you've got someone who can cover the forwards and halves, and another who can cover halves, hooker and fullback.

(re Noffa) At the time he was being spoken about as a 'possible' for the NSW Blues. I think our recruitment team got spooked by Parra's advances. A lot like Manly's just did with Shuster. Giving him more $$$ & years than we probably should have. The $$$ hurt less than the years now, ie. the rumoured amount for a shorter period would have been better.

Big O. Over at Manly could kick stones , Fulton knows his deal so it’s a player He can snag he will specially this Kid he is pretty handy
Klemmer , Appi , Steph
Big O , Bateman , Ippap
Blore , Pole , Twally
Do you think Manly will be interested in a swap, Bateman for Big O ?
