Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Why on earth would either Manly or the Warriors do this? Manly, a club widely understood to be under cap pressure, has to work out how to accommodate the highest paid prop in the game. The Warriors replace their best middle forward, who may want to leave but is still under contract, with a wildly underperforming player who plays a position in which they have a production line of young talent, and the Tigers... get to dump a crap contract in return for getting one of the most promising players in the game? That. Isn't. How. This. Works.

I would say both clubs would hang up on you the minute you suggested this deal but actually they'd probably keep you on the line for a few minutes just so they could laugh at you.
The Papalii contract is not a crap contract, $600k a year for 3 years is a really good contract

But he sucks!?

A big hard running centre that can have an impact. The problem is he will be elite in some games and ordinary in others and probably even in the same game.

If he was actually dedicated to his career he could be really good.

I just don't know if he is worth the risk.

The thing is, could you pick 5 moments throughout his career he dominated his opponents, his opposite number etc? It hasn’t happened. He’s a teddy bear.

Yeah,

Flanno must see something.
3 year deal... he will either continue the ordinary lacklustre stuff we're used to.

Or, he'll repay faith and live up to potential.
Balls in his court.

Not on 2023 performance it isn't.

Edit: I'll go further. The analysis I've seen suggests Papali'i provided more or less minimum contract value in 2023. Let's be generous and say $200k. That's $400k of value in deficit, which means he'll have to play like an $800k player for the next two years of his deal just to break even. He may have done that in his best season at Parra, but I certainly wouldn't be making any bets on it at the Tigers in 2024-25.

He is, in short, an absolutely perfect example of why throwing mid-to-big deals at mid-range "established first graders" in the free agency market is a diabolical way of building a roster.

I'd say the opposite. He's trying to implant a doubt about how much Luai is worth.
. . . . . . . and get him to take the safe option, stay with his mates, not have the pressure of being the main play maker at another club and sign for the $800-$850k offer they have made and can currently afford.

Actually the 'Riff have a pretty good win record when Luai plays and they also have a pretty good win record when Cleary does not play as well.

Says a lot about the Penrith system and the depth that they can call upon when they need to.

The big question is if Luai's win record look so good somewhere else without the rest of the Penrith team and that system around him.
