Benji Marshall #70

Papali’i is also quoted as saying he’ll be re-evaluating his options next year, as if he’s off contract (hint: He isn’t). Another rubbish year and it looks like he’ll be looking for the rip cord.

See ya buddy. Haven’t pulled your finger out to help so far, you won’t be missed.

He certainly wasn’t happy that we changed the landscape before his arrival. Understandable. maybe the eels are now willing to pay him market value?

That’s part and parcel of the game when you sign for another club. Clubs are forever changing. As for Parra, not sure why he’d want to rush back to another club that missed the 8.

Not sure about your reasoning there mate?
What do you think actually happens during interviews with players and their agents during the discovery stage? Is there no sales pitch? No painting of a picture with grandiose plans of a victorious season, where players’ market value and reputation increases exponentially?
Can you think of another club which can outdo us on change?
Theres a trust/risk factor in painting a picture of how a future Tigers’ experience will pan out.

Hard to believe what he is saying when the 2 results aside from lucky the 1 point win over reserve grade Dolphins were a 24 point loss to the Roosters and 42 point loss to 12th place Manly.

Papalli was talking about the games earlier in the year when the group still had something to play for, not the last few games where Benji unofficially took over. IMO you can't judge those last games. It doesn't matter how professional you are, once the season is gone, it's near impossible to get up for games.

The article specifically referred to the back end of the season.

“We had Benji in the back end of our season and I think that’s where we were our most consistent,” Papali’i told NRL.com.

Or are we supposed to believe Benji took over. The team improved. He relinquished control to Sheens. The team went backwards. Then Benji took over again.

I'm happy to wait and see how Benji goes before I will critique him as a coach, as rven if i think appointing him is absurd it doesnt mean he cant do the job. But a fluff piece where a player is speaking positive of the coach does nothing to increase my confidence that he will do well.

It's preseason dribble. I have no idea how Benji will go as a coach. He definitely seems like someone who is getting the players onside but winning games is what matters.

We will be fighting woth the Dragons for the spoon.

Id like hin to succed too but honestly i think 10 games into 2025 he will be sacked.

So many things about beong a coach he just has had time to learn. Hopefully he proves me wrong.

I too think we will be in the running for the spoon but I don't think Benji will be sacked, at least not that quickly.
The fact that 'improvement' is such a low bar means that we can still suck next year and be sold that the club is improving.
I also think a couple other coaches will be attracting the headlines for their club regressing which will further keep the pressure off Marshall.

Benji can spin it with the best, but he needs to demonstrate some progress next year across a number of areas on and off the field to justify why he actually got the gig in the first place
He hasdefinitely NOT got a free kick in 24
