2024 Pre-Season

and was bigger than anyone on the field. I was at his debut and he looked like a man against boys on his debut
Certainly was a unit but took a few years to get the brain and the body together. He is someone who definitely got better with age.
Used to get a bit of flack about being a bit soft but always gave of his best and absorbed some serious punishment.

Fulton and Gould never thought Sirro was soft - always one of their first picked for Australia and NSW respectively!

Great player and even better person!

No it's actually correct ...checked his Wiki page ....he must have been young when he debuted
Yeah, he certainly packed a lot into his younger years and all the detail is a little unclear, to me at least.

If he had his 1st grade debut for Balmain in 1985, that would have been not all that long after his 20th Birthday, so pretty young but not as young as some people may be thinking.

At some stage prior to that he was on a University scholarship in Hawaii playing football, so how you get noticed by a scout or who ever to get a scholarship to play American Football would be an interesting story on it's own.

No idea what he was studying in University in Hawaii, most probably majoring in running over the top of people.

I remember a story about him on the news when he was starting out in 1st grade with Balmain and not really sure if that was in 1985 when he only played 2 1st grade games and got Rookie of the Year or sometime in 1986 when he became established as a 1st grader, but he was a cop on the beat at Balmain back then.

Very interesting life and will always be a Tigers legend, wishing him all the best with his move to the North coast.

When Sironen came through, Balmain had another outstanding junior second row forward who was of the running variety. His name was Bruce Parnell and he appeared to have a very high ceiling until he broke his leg and that was it. Add Dennis Bendall and Geoff Starling and it is just sad.

Parnell was a great player and i still remember him being carried off at Belmore Oval in a lower grade (his last game). He was destined to be playing FG in that great Balmain pack of the 80's

I remember doing boxing at Balmain PCYC and he'd train there every so often. I am positive it was after his injury. I hardly spoke to him but he seemed happy enough.

I think it's a little different now. I paid something like $2 for membership and that was it. My son did boxing and now MMA but he pays a couple of grand per year.
Yeah , pay by the term now.

My local ones offer boxing and BJJ
Great for the kids, if run properly.

Personally, found them to be inconsistent.
Trainers don't turn up some days.
Let the kids down.

Going to a real gym >

I didn't do it for long mate. As soon as I realized I could get punched in the head I stopped.
Well I used to turn up and do some sparring and they’d say assume your correct starting position, I’d immediately lay flat out on the floor.
Could have sold advertising on the soles of my boots. I eventually worked out I wouldn’t be another Lionel Rose or Johnny Famechon.
Oh well, you can’t be good at everything !
