Cricket Season Thread

Lance Morris hey. I’ll be interested to see if he actually gets a crack. Doesn’t have the greatest figures but they reckon he’s pretty quick. He’s obviously one of the next in line.
Surprised he got picked over Nesser and Richardson or are they injured, I can’t remember?
And if he makes the XI, he'll be on his home track.

Looking at Stats Nesser is a genuine all-rounder
Key game day pick will be Marsh or Green as the No 6 all-rounder
Depending on form, but I read after Warners retirement they are considering a reshuffle and playing both Bogey and Greeny. I think the reshuffle might be Head to open with Usy.

Mitch Johnson has torched Warner today.
Says he doesn’t deserve the hero’s sendoff based on form and the cheating incident. Has a fair point.

I haven’t seen this article? But how’s he feel about Smith when he retires, and Bancroft could be about to replace Warner, if he kills it over the next five’s years and becomes our greatest ever opener, will he still say the same? I personally think it was wrong and is cheating but he didn’t kill anyone, done his time. I wonder what Mitch thought of Greg Chapel?
I’m going to find he article.

He does have a fair point. He shouldn’t have the red carpet laid out for him by CricOz for a “Hero’s “ send off, but if the fans wanna go out to the game to send him off then ok. I’ll be there. Not to send him off but coz I love test match cricket.
I posted before he got pick for the ashes when he came out and said he’s retiring in Sydney test, that he only said that to get himself picked for the ashes and then picked up until Sydney. It was contrived, by Candice I reckon, to ensure he got picked. Davey’s not smart or sneaky enough, he’d just pull out some sandpaper and try to rub all his problems away.

Dropped the spinner for the extra pace man for the only change? Interesting decision. And as I write this big Dorff Dorff has taken a wicket.

If you're going to let him come back and play, you can't keep punishing the guy after he's done his time.

I think it’s the nature of his retirement that isn’t sitting well.
A lot of people do not think he has earned the right to go out on his own terms.
His returns lately have been mediocre….despite a double century last summer at home. In fact, in that series, he hit 213 runs from 4 digs which included 200 in one of them. He averaged 25 in that same summer v Windies and then went to India where he was dreadful. His efforts in the Ashes was one of the reasons we didn’t win them outright.
This isn’t The Don retiring.

I don’t think his lean period should come into calculation when deciding whether to roll out the red carpet.
Why not?
The last two ashes series in England he was one of our worst and it was his contributions that allowed England to scrape through with drawn series.
He should have been sacked from the team in 2019 when he failed to amass 100 runs total from 10 innings. That was truly disgraceful batting. Although he responded by having an amazing summer at home that same year against the Pakis and Kiwis;
1. he then returned awful figures in our failed campaign against India at home
2. apart from one good innings, was poor in a very good Australian side who flogged England in 21-22 Ashes
3. was poor in Australia’s successful tour against Pakistan over there
4. was very poor in Australia’s failed tour of Sri Lanka
5. was poor last summer against the West Indies
6. apart from one excellent innings, was very poor v South Africa last summer
7. had a very poor tour of India this year
8. didn’t offer much in the World Test Championship
9. was awful again against England in this years Ashes series

It’s likely he will do ok against Pakistan at home this summer but the widely held opinion is he shouldn’t be there and that’s what Mitch Johnson was saying yesterday.

I get the sentiment. I suppose it’s a career context, rather than a judgement of recent form.

Over his career, he has achieved a lot and sits quite high on all-time runs for Australia.

but you are correct. Consistency hasn’t been a hallmark of his career.

Bcoz it’s not about current form or form here or there when deciding if you roll out the red carpet. Most sports people that retire are doing so bcoz their form has been questionable and they are getting on, and as @weststigers said it’s about the career & character & service to Oz.
Now I’m not arguing with you he shouldn’t get the same kind of fancy finish that Mcgarth, AB, Waugh, etc got.
I posted in this thread before he got picked for the last Ashes that I would not be picking him to go, and I would have left him at home for the previous ashes series as well. I don’t think Warner travels well at all and has been picked on his home form. But they kept picking him?
He made a bad call to cheat and got caught at something that has been done for a century, but he did it and let a young player do it too and that’s what I find the worst thing. CricOz think what he did was so bad they have banned him from coaching for life, so if they roll out the red carpet it’s a bit hypocritical.
Anyway they rolled out the red carpet for Warney and he was a drug cheat?

I think Warner should be picked for the 3 tests vs Pakistan !
First what options ? Harris ,Renshaw no thanks
Second he's had a great career in all 3 formats
Third he's already copped the biggest punishment ever for the sandpaper gate fiasco
I noted at the time he was completely losing his cool as the South African team management were publicly calling his wife a [This word has been automatically removed] BEFORE the incident and never apologised for that .Seems an odd time just after a world cup triumph for Johnson to dredge up the past ? Maybe he's now a journalist who wants click bait to enhance his readership . WA with Langer and Johnson maybe still aggrieved?

Exactly.
But you must get the kids and newbies in or die. T20 is the gateway drug. Getting them in with a little hit and giggle, and then hopefully progress to playing and watching the proper game too.
I hope you are right .One thing the ODI world cup has shown us is that 50 over cricket is still a marvellous spectacle

I think there’s a little bit of that going on here. He’s probably feeling left out and needs to feel relevant.

Apparently Warner has not responded publicly to Johnson’s remarks, but his manager James Erskine has told SEN:

“(Johnson) is basically making comments that I think are incendiary……….. If he thinks basically three people did Sandpaper-gate, then he should go to the moon for holiday. I mean, it’s just a joke.”

I took a double take at the manager’s comment. So there were more than 3 players involved in sandpaper gate.

Some people have speculated that this might be why the selectors have persisted with Warner despite his mediocre form for the past several years.

They are concerned that if they dropped Warner before the Sydney test he might spill his guts about sandpaper gate and implicate the rest of the team and even management.

Pure speculation of course, but I have wondered why we have persisted with an out of form Warner for so long.

That’s a very good point you’ve raised and I do remember some mention of this when the bans were first brought down. Maybe he has had CA by the balls for the past few years?

No I don’t think there is a conspiracy. They get mesmerised by his home form every year and then pick him to travel when it’s plainly obvious he is terrible away from home, check his stats, I think he averages nearly 60 at home and 30ish away. He should be banned from getting on international flights.
Except ODI’s he averages just over and just under 45 for home and away, so pretty consistent.
Johnsons problem is Dave and George texted him and didn’t ring him with their replies to his digs. It’s not like they were breaking up with him and he deserved a phone call??? Johnson’s having a sook but he was always a bit soft.
And sandpaper gate is over who cares anymore, and tampering with the ball has been part of cricket for a century. Well up until the change the laws, you can’t even use a bit of spit but you can sweat?
