Penrith superstar Jarome Luai was a no-show at training on Monday amid tensions surrounding his decision to quit the Panthers and join the Wests Tigers.
Luai’s representatives told the Panthers the five-eighth would not be at training, 48 hours after he had informed coach Ivan Cleary and his teammates he would be leaving his boyhood club for the Tigers at the end of the 2024 season.
Beautiful.
Get him here in '24

Its the RLPA. Newton is a clown whos about himself and making headlines. Players should get paid well but somethings including this 10 day period is just rubbish. All it does is make the managers have another bow to their string in negotiations.
Well there is an argument that it gives the incumbent club a clear avenue to make a final counter-offer. So in that respect it may still work out that incumbent clubs have an advantage - hasn't really been tested out yet.

i’m starting to think theres more to this and he has taken the panthers offer to be more disrespectful than we think.. (*puts on tin foil hat)
I reckon it's more about the media spotlight. There are very few other deals going on right now and this is probably going to be the biggest deal all Summer.

The media already camped outside training last week when the deal was publicised.

You may not see Luai back at training until Panthers and Tigers (or Bulldogs) have reached an agreement about how the agreement will be announced, and 100% clarity what Luai is doing in 2024.

The paperwork is yet to be lodged with the NRL, but the Panthers are expected to waive the 10-day period and don’t have the appetite to get into a bidding war with the Tigers. The Bulldogs, who had verbally offered Luai a five-year deal, are still monitoring the situation.
This could mean an announcement earlier then the stipulate 10-days...

Ivan wanted the young 9 so maybe that will take place

So you’re saying if there are say 5 clubs after Luai’s signature they should synchronise the lodging of their formal offers?
No ??? He’s the one who signs and it’s lodged as per his intention . Like literally every American sport . That’s submitted and the existing team has a right of reply or not .
In baseball this also leads to a compensatory draft pick depending on how good the player is . Usually defined by the salary they sign for / organised through arbitration where that is all designated .
Tier 1 is an end of the first round draft pick tier 2 is end of the 2nd . But that’s not applicable or comparable to the nrl . The most comparable is nba. Which is just straight RFA .
If anything it stops agents screwing people around . Also in the NBA this is a time where the team that has lodged the offer can negotiate settlements with the existing team . Player trades , draft picks etc , to ensure the deal goes through .
The player is the one who makes the ultimate decision , but once it’s made it’s made .
