John Bateman #268

Bateman is closer to Liam Fulton than he is to Kikau.

If you are looking for a damaging ball runner- that's probably going to end in disappointment. If you want ball skills, good defence & setting up those around him- probably going to be happier.

Not every player has to be a carbon copy of the leading opposition players to be effective.

We don't have a ball playing Isiah Yeo at 13. But we do have a ball running powerhouse style in Pole at 13. Does that mean Pole will never succeed?

Having better creativity in the halves & A CENTRE THAT CAN RUN A LINE will make Bateman look infinitely better. I do wonder if someone like Naden or....Olam...running off a Bateman popped pass would look nice and effective out wide..

He’s a Victor Radley type of cat.

Bateman in the past, particularly when playing for the Raiders demonstrated he is capable of running the ball at pace and being an attacking weapon for his team.
For whatever reason he chose not to do this for us in season 2023.
I know he’s getting he older, but you can still run the ball at somewhere close to too speed occasionally.
The lack of quality in the halves no doubt contributed, but I watched him closely to try and work out why he was a shadow of the player he was when playing for the Raiders and lack of intensity was clearly his biggest issue.
I’m hoping to see a big improvement in him in 2024, but I have huge doubts he will improve, I think he’s just here to take the piss and collect his big money pay cheque.

Fulton/Radley....he's not a Kikau.

If anyone is looking for a damaging metre cruncher- look elsewhere.
I hear if the coaches got their way we’d have Tyson Frizell here and not him. Not a bad second chance prize though going off his recent test match efforts.

I wish people would lay off our better players, it was a failure to score points that ultimately derailed our season and that’s not on Bateman, Ice, Klem etc.

Watch how important hard running edge back rowers are to the successful NRL teams in their attack and scoring points.

I don’t think he is slacking off and here only to get a pay check he played buggered a few times that most in the side would’ve missed a game for.

His best skill is defense. He gets under people’s skin because he’s a mongrel. Don’t expect an attacking genius and you won’t be disappointed. 17 Batemans and you win at rugby league.
Or you lose because you get, sin bins, send offs or just simply can't get over the penalty count that mounts up against you week in and week out.

We have already been dumb and ill disciplined enough in the past without going out of our way to make things worse.

Bateman has been pretty lucky getting away with the niggle so far and in my opinion at least, has stretched his luck enough and gotten away with more than I ever expected would be possible, especially playing for us.

I would hate to see what sort of a flogging we would get from the match officials if we had 17 Batemans.

Rich saying get the blinkers off when you hate Bateman and love Seyfarth.

To suggest Seyfarth ran the ball up hard more than anyone is laughable considering he was is the most inefficient forward meters to hitups and post contact meters v games played of any forward that has clocked 40+ games within the NRL over the last 10 seasons.

Seyfarth didn’t make 100mtrs in a single game last year (Bateman hit 130+ in 6 games, clocked 150 in 2). Seyfarth averaged 49mtrs a game compared to 107 of Batemans.

Seyfarth also had single digits for post contact meters in 4 games & cracked 30+ in 4 games. Bateman had 1 game in single figures & 11 games over 30mtrs.

Now Seyfarth did have a good run mid season but that was a rare blip in his nrl career. He has been an A grade pillow in NRL level.

If you run it off minutes and hitups played Seyfarth out ranks Bateman in 5 games only on ratios.
And Bateman started in everyone of his game's so your talking about ratio get your calculator out and work out the ratio in minutes played not only would seyfarth outrank most so would blore for the same reasons

So what your saying is Seyfarth averged half the metres per game that Bateman averaged with half the minutes?

Bateman has played alot of football at centre Bennett also played him at centre

Put a fast winger on the outside of him and play Blore in the backrow until a centre becomes available

He's a genuine footballer who plays on the ball as much as you can as an edge player - and creates opportunities with points of difference like deft kicking - offloads and angled running + his competiveness and tenacity!

Averages over 100m per game and makes 90+% of his tackles effectively and with aggression...

Plays injured and for long minutes...

Good veteran team player whose team mates gravitate to...

Yeah - he's crap.
