John Bateman #268

Maybe he will now we have upgraded our half’s , did you watch any test football recently , he was very good , very good
I saw numerous occasions where Daine Laurie was looking for a ball runner on his immediate outside and JB was just plodding, not a realistic option.
Compare that to someone like Liam Martin who is always a willing ball runner for his playmakers and does some damage with ball in hand.

Get into it fellas….

When is the Pommy back by the way?

Hope his Visa is already sorted out for the 2024 season …
He just comes back to training whenever he feels like it.
He might arrive in February then need to acclimatise to the Aussie sun.
Getting paid the same as Liam Martin, what a joke.

@Vicious I suggest watching the highlights of the England series against Tonga recently where he won player of the series. There’s definitely an elite player in Johnny Bateman & imo for a brief period was in our top 3 players every week before he was moved to lock.

He’s starting pre season next week because he finished the season late & as are many other players for clubs. Players like DCE, Haas, Carrigan, Yeo, Harry Grant etc etc… don’t see their fans complaining about not being committed do ya?

You and others can argue all you like, but the fact is edge back rowers are vital to any NRL teams success.
Days of the workhorse toiler type of edge back rower are gone, to enable your team to score points and win games you need edge back rowers who cause inroads, break tackles, make line breaks, score tries,
I know Bateman is capable of displaying all of those traits, but the back half of season 2023 he didn’t display any of them due to only ever running the ball at half pace.

Just when I think you can’t post anything dumber, you exceed my expectations.

Bateman averaged just under 110m per game while the powderpuff Seyfarth averaged under 50m per game (which was sitting below 30m until he strung together a few solid games)
Bateman also had a higher tackle efficiency than Seyfarth while playing more minutes and making more tackles.
Bateman also had more post contact metres per game than Seyfarth

Do you make an effort to be the dumbest poster on here or does it come naturally to you?
Seyfarth n blore were the only two running hard every carry they had while providing impact of the bench people keep saying how bad our half's are which is true blore had to put up with Brooks and Wakeham inside him with limited opportunity on the edge mark my words watch him outside Munster

Get the blinkers off and watch the game.
Seyfarth run the ball harder than Bateman in every carry throughout 2023.
If you think paying 700k for someone who runs the ball half hearted is good value, then good for you. He made more sideways metres than Nofoaluma and that’s saying something.

Rich saying get the blinkers off when you hate Bateman and love Seyfarth.

To suggest Seyfarth ran the ball up hard more than anyone is laughable considering he was is the most inefficient forward meters to hitups and post contact meters v games played of any forward that has clocked 40+ games within the NRL over the last 10 seasons.

Seyfarth didn’t make 100mtrs in a single game last year (Bateman hit 130+ in 6 games, clocked 150 in 2). Seyfarth averaged 49mtrs a game compared to 107 of Batemans.

Seyfarth also had single digits for post contact meters in 4 games & cracked 30+ in 4 games. Bateman had 1 game in single figures & 11 games over 30mtrs.

Now Seyfarth did have a good run mid season but that was a rare blip in his nrl career. He has been an A grade pillow in NRL level.

If you run it off minutes and hitups played Seyfarth out ranks Bateman in 5 games only on ratios.

I don’t disagree with you re Bateman and his value to the side impact wise but he wasn’t & isn’t our biggest issue. I wasn’t a fan of him coming but do also think the constant halves & outside back changes impacted his effectiveness mixed with missing most the preseason - Papa I thought called this out end of season in an interview re the constant change in structures and personnel.

He was playing Tonga…my nan could run winning lines against them, and she’s dead.
Jonny was a waste of money last year. Needs to step it up and have a bloody go.

Luke Garner would have added more value to the Tigers last year over stick legs Bateman. Very disappointed with his overall performance last year but in saying that I was probably more disappointed with others players. Scratch that, the entire team was disappointing so in a sea of disappointment he was mid disappointment, barely treading water.

Bateman was playing well until we tried him at 13. At that point it showed that he didn't have a pre-season. Making 40-50 tackles a game in the middle was too much for him. His best skill is when a half puts him into a tiny bit of space and he can jag around trying to create chaos.

Hoping to see better attacking numbers from Bateman and Papali'i in 2024 with better halves.

Agreed, his first few games were really good for us, Sheens stuffed him up and that led to him being a disappointment overall for the season. Hopefully Benji, with real halves this year can get the best out of his backrow in Bateman and Ice.

I hope the coaching, but more importantly the culture changes under Benji. If he can get that right,.. and a new backline, we’ll be competitive next year.
3 big hurdles there.
Do you suppose we’ll cover all three in this off season?

Culture is key. If Benji can change that we’ll be halfway there. It will take a season and a couple of signings.
Oh you meant for 25?
I think Benji getting the coaching right whilst changing the culture is probably too big of an ask in his first dig but hopefully he can build a strong backline. Culture change may take a couple of years.

One plays 80mins, the other plays 20mins if he’s lucky you imbecile.
You obviously cannot read either as I’ve stated edge back rowers are supposed to provide impact, tackle busts, line breaks. Your mate Johnny didn’t even try to get out of first gear in 2023. They must be counting the sideways metres in his stats.
Using us up for an Aussie vacation.
But you stick with your stats and be happy all edge back rowers at other NRL clubs run onto the ball with venom, while your mate doesn’t even attempt to.
When you have to actually go and get the ball because your halves are not first graders then run it back to the edge it can create an optical illusion.

Bateman brings intangible stuff to a footy team, watch harder.

Did Blore play this year???

His best skill is defense. He gets under people’s skin because he’s a mongrel. Don’t expect an attacking genius and you won’t be disappointed. 17 Batemans and you win at rugby league.
