Australia Day

this may be pig headed, but vandalism of this sort just makes me dig my heels in even more and become more of a proponent of keeping the date.

Ironic that the vandals of the Captain Cook memorial used English for their graffiti.

Unless they are full blood Aboriginal, by rejecting white settlement they are in denial of their own existence, for they are part settler.

In any case if the continent wasn't settled by Europeans in 1788 it surely would've been settled by so called invaders by now.

The stupid thing is the morons didn't even know that Capt Cook has nothing to do with Aust Day. So much for the education system.
Well that’s probably coz the school system has changed its focus. My 11yo granddaughter knows all this stuff about gender labels and transgender plus all sorts of Indigenous information( which is not a bad thing) but the curriculum seems to have moved away from
our origins via Britain. And this shows their ignorance that they can’t differentiate between Cook and Phillip, unless they do know and it’s just symbolic. Either way it’s a disgrace.

I suppose the message of the vandals is cancel colonisation and a rejection of British/European culture.

Implicit in that is non aboriginal people should leave.

But to where?

And it includes them.

Hope they catch the bastards so we can see first hands who these pricks are.
Then put them in stocks in Bourke Street Melbourne and we can all throw tomatoes, eggs or the like at them.
Yeah that's fine, as long as you send the dick heads up here when you're finished so we can have a crack at them as well.

The world's getting dumber and dumber.

Social media has given the idiots od the world a voice.

I'm proud to be a Second Generation Australian with no hair and blue eyes.
The world is indeed an increasingly scary place, at least to my peers and I. It’s being turned on it’s head and it’s hard for me to understand.
But I’m proud to be a seventh generation Aussie of Irish heritage with great hair and blue eyes . 🤣🤣

People are passionate about this critical subject.

Disgusting vandalism on Captain Cook statue in Melb.

This great nation should not be ashamed to celebrate what we are today together.

I am.proud to be Australian.
Imagine what this country would be like if Cook didn't turn up could be like Rwanda or worse people don't think about it just want to bring it down

Not mine but totally agree.

Vandalising statues of Captain Cook and Queen Victoria to protest colonisation is more evidence of the total IGNORANCE of these FOOLS.

This land mass was NEVER going to stay isolated and disconnected from the rest of the world. The Dutch, Portuguese and French had all been here - and the French arrived just days after the First Fleet. If it wasn't the British, it could have and would have been any number of other countries.

As for their vandalism....the vandals need to do a bit of reading. Captain Cook had been dead for nearly 10 years before the First Fleet arrived and Queen Victoria reigned 50 years after the arrival of the First Fleet.... from 1837 and fleets stopped arriving in 1840 so she had nothing to do with the First Fleet either.

Australia Day as a national holiday is celebrated on January 26th because that's the date the 'Nationality and Citizenship Act of 1948 became law and the term ‘Australian citizen’ was used for the first time. (The First Fleet actually arrived about the 17th ....and then they moved locations to what is now Sydney Cove on January 26th 1788).

We are ALL beneficiaries of the arrival of the Europeans - and I am grateful it was the British who settled.

I will be celebrating Australia Day - loudly!”

This is an interesting point, but I doubt that makes the day any different for indigenous Australians.

Why though do you think that January 26th was chosen for the Act to become law?

I also don't think that is a much better reason for indigenous people as indigenous people were still denied many of the fundamental rights of Australian citizenship by that Act. They were not even included as part of the population.

It wasn't until 1984 indigenous Australians had full voting rights in Australia. It's only been 40 years since we decided to give indigenous Australians the same voting rights as other Australians.

I don't see the issue in choosing to have our national day on a day that allows indigenous Australians to be involved.

If the goalposts are then moved by activists then at least an attempt was made in good faith.

This is misleading at best and not correct and should be corrected just for the sake of discussion.

Indigenous men in NSW, SA & Victoria could vote prior to 1895. In 1895, indigenous women were the first women to have the right to vote in Australia, before even white women.

When Australia became an independent nation in 1901, any indigenous people who had registered to vote retained their right to vote.

In 1962 all indigenous people had the right to vote and could enrol to vote and vote like any other Australian.

In 1984 it became compulsory for indigenous Australians to vote, like any other Australian.

Proud that rugby league is mostly a place that creates unity rather than division. Always found indigenous players to be freakish athletes and humble people in my time in the game.
