TEAM LIST Trial 2 vs. Dragons

Team List
Staines and Tupou don’t excite me as wingers at all. Charlie is a lightweight who gets manhandled and lot. He is no good out of yardage. Jr plays like he couldn’t give a shit. Although a strong carrier of the ball, he can’t catch for his life and is a poor defender. I’d like to see one of them replaced by the Lobbster and the other as soon as someone else is ready.
Toa has had more than enough opportunities to impress. Far more than he has deserved. I’d like Naden over him with an eye to implement Faataape when he is ready.
Sullivan can stay for now but I remain unconvinced he is our answer at 6 this year. Fainu needs quick conversion.
AJ is not a backrower. Piss him off …out of the club if possible.
Galvin on the bench…no.
Fair points, thanks for responding

We need the win to instil belief in the players this club is on the up “on the field”….belief in this area is lacking badly..the Dragons are a team we should easily beat no matter the significance of the game..bet your bottom dollar Flanno wants his team to win badly for the same reasons…

A win naturally instills confidence but a win/loss in this game isn’t going to define our season.

- Bateman & Naden still on the mend, both should be right for Round 2. Naden may no get the jump on Tupou with no game time. Maybe Lobb is a half a chance. Kepaoa not in the 17 if everyone is fit.

- Faataape had to get stitches above the eye after Trial 1. Doubt he plays NSW Cup either.

- Of note in another thread Matamua free to go if can find a new home. Seyfarth gets the 13. Sione Fainu looked fair in Trial 1 as well, may get NRL minutes this year pending injuries... Plus maybe a contract extension.

- Also Tumeth not named in either Trial team & is top 30. Has a Player Option for next year. From the outside looking in would seem on the outer.

- Interested to see who plays back row in Trial 2 if Pap's or AJ subbed out.

Faagutu spent much of the preseason with Kepaoa in the opposed side training at backrow so would assume he is the next option up. However he is recovering from a minor injury. I would much rather see Faagutu in the middle, hes much more suited to a 13 or even a smaller 10 at a pinch (play style much like a Cotter or Murray).

On Faagutu, I believe he is the most underrated of the juniors coming through. Galvin and Da Silva have a higher ceiling/potential but I think he is the safest bet in terms of fulfilling his potential, due to his attitude and work ethic. While developing these Wests juniors is the absolute priority at the moment, I hope we dont forget about the ability of some of these other junior stars that we have in the system.

On a side note, would personally like to see Samuela play in the backrow as i believe that is his best position. He would be a nightmare running at opposition halves with his size and strength.

I have high hopes for Samuela. Needs to get the penalties out of his game but won't take a backward step which we need. Holds his own. Agree he would terrorise at 2nd row. Would be very unlucky not to be in the 17 come round 2.

Maybe not define a season but ive always watched us struggle with confidence and belief which comes from winning. You win a couple trials and theres a bit of lift around the COE especially with the younger less experienced players. You take that small bit of energy and belief in to round 2 and win that game and now there is something that can help define a season.

We do not need to win at all. I can give you a dozen examples of how trial form is meaningless. How do you get a form line when there is 13 players on the bench. 26 players running around over the course of 80 mins, and some think this is do or die in the context of our season. Come on people.

I thought he was incredibly weak at centre and he's been very ordinary at 2RF also.

I don't think he should be in the full strength 17 and should be shown the door as soon as we can.

Like us to find a better player to fill this role.
There you go, you said it.
At this stage, at the club there isn’t anyone betwer

Yeah in that trial against Canberra last year, we looked sharp and effective in attack.
We only replicated that form a couple of times in the following 7 months afterwards.

I assumed during the off season that Fainu was the next cab off the rank in terms of back rowers, but it appears that’s going to be AJ. Expect him to be a regular off the bench. And if Pap or Bateman go down………Oh man.

GNR

We are coming of

2 spoons,
A decade of no finals
A largely young squad
A Rookie coach
A round 1 bye

We need momentum in any form.

The boys need to win against the Dragons

Mate, we put on a score against the Raideas at Belmore last year, and then came out in the first two rounds at Leichhardt and put in two of the limpest displays imaginable and didn’t win a game till round 9. So I don’t see what we can take out of this game in terms of a result.

RE: Latu Fainu

Wasn't there a suspension from the WC he had to sit out? From memory these trial matches counted? Or am I remembering wrong?

I thought it was 1 trial game.
They club have said nothing about it.
Their has been zero build up in the off season for him as well - I like it but for us that’s not normal.

He could be suspended, injured, on the outer or playing a full game of nsw cup.

Guess time will tell.

I don’t understand the anti trial game sentiment?
These games are probably more important to us than any other club. We need to learn a few things during these games, especially how to win. Regardless of who gets thrown onto the field, if they’re wearing a WT jersey they need to tally up all the little wins during the game. A win on the scoreboard would be the ultimate win of course. I’m sure Heigno is laser focussed on those effort areas.
I don’t want to see another season of players not giving a toss if we win or lose.

This will be a very important game for us.

It's an accurate assessment on whether we get out of the bottom 4 this year.

Man we need this win against the Dragons
I don't think we "need" this win... From Rd 2 onwards yes

How can it be an accurate anything if Benji plays its like last weekend and has a 2nd half of juniors running around
It can only be accurate of what we've worked on ourselves, playing the game benji wants us to and really disregarding the opposition... That's the coaches focus if it's the same as the first game (I haven't heard benji pre saints game yet)
This game will be forgotten by the time round two rolls around

Do you think flanno prefers :
A) his teams plays poorly yet jags a win....

Or does he prefer

B) they play well, what they've been put into practice all summer worked well, his new combinations clicked... Yet they lost

I think both coaches choose the latter

It was a one game suspension and he served it during the last trial match.

He’s eligible to play now, I think he might have a niggling injury.
