Legends and life members have reunited at Wests Tigers Zurich Centre to launch the club’s all-new Alumni on the eve of the 2024 NRL season.

Wests Tigers Alumni has been created to reconnect past players as the club enters its 25th season in the NRL, and second season in the NRLW.

It will initially be driven by life members Chris Lawrence, Pat Richards, and John Skandalis, who were all on hand on Friday.

Wests Tigers has been represented by 275 players in the club’s first 24 seasons, who between them have played almost 10,000 NRL games in the orange, black and white.
Several past players were at the launch on Friday, trading stories and reliving old yarns, as the NRL team played a high-impact intra-club trial match ahead of its season-opener next weekend.

Among them were players from Wests Tigers very first game which was a 24-all draw against the Broncos at Campbelltown on Sunday 6th February 2000.
Skandalis, who scored the club’s very first try on that day, was joined at the launch by others from ‘game one’ including Owen Craigie and Shane Walker, as well as many more who played in Wests Tigers inaugural season.
Ten Wests Tigers ‘centurions’ were at the launch, including the likes of Keith Galloway, Ben Galea, Daniel Fitzhenry and Beau Ryan, adding to the rich DNA of the coaching staff, led by Wests Tigers legend, Benji Marshall.
Wests Tigers CEO Shane Richardson says while the WT Alumni will be run by former players, it will receive the club’s full support.
“I think it’s hugely important, even more so as we enter our 25th season, that we have an official group that represents our past players,” said Richardson.
“We have had 275 players who have worn these colours with pride, and they will forever be a part of this club.
Tradition and heritage are vastly important and very much influence who we are today.
Shane Richardson Wests Tigers CEO
"We will give Chris, John, and Pat our full support as a club to help grow the WT Alumni, because it’s an important step forward for Wests Tigers.

Lawrence says he’s delighted that so many former players wanted to be there for the launch.
“Just by looking around here today, you can see how important this initiative is to the players,” he said.
“The Alumni provides players with a forum to reconnect with each other and the Wests Tigers community.
“It also gives them a way to remember and celebrate their contribution to the Club whilst also offering support to the current playing group.
We want this group to continue to build and to help the club grow in whatever way we can.
Chris Lawrence Wests Tigers Player #104
"We also want this to be a community where retiring players can remain a big part of the club once they exit the game.”

There's a little girl btween rowdy and galea... I wonder who she's representing?

Bloke between Mark OHalloran and Tim Grant
Justin Doyle?

Who's between Galloway and Groat?
Edit: Ahmad Bahjouri I think
Gareth Ellis involved too I think but not in the photo
This is a good move I feel if done right, can be beneficial for the club and today's players.
Some great names there that I think are very good people... Today's players won't have any idea on who a lot of them are but hope theyre encouraged to research them and the history of the club in order to gain a better sense of positive club culture
I hope Hodgo is involved eventually too when time permits.
Also blokes like SEnter, Oneill, Halatau

Agree that it’s a nice initiative but right here, right now, all we want is a competitive team. If this brings some added impetus then well and good, if not imo, it’s only window dressing.
All clubs have their “old boys” set up in one form or another, so we must honour the past by creating new success.

Yes champion @Halbrowne61, I agree with your comment.
However, this group allows a new path for current players to aspire to be part of.
Their success as Wests Tigers players will allow them to become future proud Alumni down the track.
And that implies future success to be remembered based on current (and future) results of players wearing the Wests Tigers jersey.

Too right champion @innsaneink.
There's a few gaps there - perhaps it's all in the communication.
And this Alumni has potential to be a means of us fans "keeping in touch" with the players long after they've retired, and for themselves, a network where even, say, mental health is dealt with, without isolation.

Gareth Ellis in official training gear... I wonder what his role is?
There's a video of him on the Tigers website explaining his role. Basically a welfare manager for all English players in the NRL. A link between the welfare managers at their clubs and back home for the English players. He has the Tigers kit on for photos and visited Bateman for his job while at the Tigers. He might be busy with Homesick Bateman in the coming years.

I like this initiative.

It is one of the things Richo stated. To reconnect with former players is very important.

I don't think every single player is worthy though as we have churned through a few in 25 years

Hard to say,
A bloke like Magic Waters - played a few minutes NRL off the bench but was a local junior in and around the club for years…
same could be said about blokes like David Gower or Jared Farlow…
Some of our club legends are their best mates…

Bloke like Sean Meaney was an important member of the squad for quite a while as well…
More often than not, the fellas that didn’t make a big dint in the NRL wasn’t because they weren’t putting in… blokes can be in the ressies for years before they get a start - I feel they should have the same recognition as everyone else.

Agree, only one thing I don’t understand? Why wait 25 years to showcase yesterday’s heroes and strengthen a cultural identity?
