Sack Marshall

Just my opinion of course, but I think the biggest faux pas we made, among a heap of them, was not signing Flanagan as coach when he was keen to come here and instead opting for the nostalgia of the Sheens/Benji combo.

Say what you like about Flanagan but he can coach. He’s doing a good job with Saints, who were on a par with us for being crap the past two years. They are still a little inconsistent, but have improved greatly in just half a season whereas we’re still floundering and, in fact, are getting worse.
We should have at least talked to him.

I agree .. we have 1 Bishop and 15 Pawns out on the field. -
Bula is surrounded by Pawns who can move 2 steps the first time they touch the ball then restricted to 1 step for the remainder of the game.
Great analogy TT.

The other strong pieces are Benji and Richo.

Being 12-0 up at half time clearly shows that the team was not motivated to carry on. Look at the final score, Wests tigers did not add to their score after half time whilst St George piled on an extra 50 points. Atrocious and shameful Wests tigers.
Flanagan is a premiership-winning coach who knows how to identify and exploit opposition weaknesses. Some of our players were obviously targeted, Seyfarth etc for discipline and Galvin or Sullivan (or take your pick ) in defence. His team had the advantage in size and skills, along with experienced leaders who can execute a game plan that feeds off these strengths. He clearly made tactical adjustments at halftime. Given some of our ball handling errors before then, it wouldn't have been too hard to devise a plan that capitalises on these vulnerabilities.

They're aware that with player fatigue setting in and our team's inexperience in high-pressure situations, not only are we ill-equipped to adapt a game plan to counter theirs, but we also struggle to recover from it afterward. They simply took full advantage of this - as every other team that has beaten us has.

St George have a big forward pack that just wore our guys out by half time.
When will the penny drop that you have to win the middle, and lightweight triers don't win the 2nd
half battle? All the top sides have a winning pack of forwards.
Stef is supposed to be our pack leader, enforcer? At 4 runs = 38m something ain't right?
Steph wasn’t interested last night - probably made up his mind to go … withdraw the offer, he’s not worth 800k per season

Unfortunately it is going to take 3-4 years to get this squad even to Top 8 levels…

I see very limited chances that Benji survives to June 2025 … the team is likely to still be worst in the comp until then …unless Richo has about 4 or 5 NRL quality signings in the pipeline this offseason..

He might be gone quicker depending on the efforts of the current players the rest of this season

To those saying we aren’t poorly coached…
#1 we admittedly did not work on attack in the pre season and as a result have amassed 187 points from 12 digs. We are the worst in the comp.
#2 we did work on our defence and it has us 13th from 17…27 against/game.
#3 our discipline is shocking with entirely too many errors, infringements, penalties, sinbins and suspensions. We are the worst in the comp.
#4 established first graders are leaving and aren’t being replaced by suitable players.
#5 We are 2 wins from 14 rounds.
#6 We are on a 9 game losing streak after flogging the table topping Sharks and toughing out a gritty win against Parra at their joint.
#7 A number of our senior players are regressing in form.

The whole team amassed 220 run metres in the second half last night… Surely that has to be a record…

I love Benji...I really do....but he needs to spend some time as an assistant coach, hopefully under Bennett, before any players would take him seriously. Players are NOT "on his bus" and it clearly shows on the field.

He kept saying he emphasized discipline for 9 freakin games. But players don't seem to care nor take his words seriously. Ice wants out, Stefano clearly doesn't want to play for him, Simpkins another, Naden couldn't care less, Kepaoa same, Dud just wants to showcase his talent for a new contract and doesn't care about Benji's discipline talk.

All our youngsters who might have looked up to Benji as a hero growing up are starting to lose faith too. Bula is not the same player compared to last year. Gavin is heading down that track. Even Olam has gone down a gear.

Of course, when things go well, everyone wants to look like superstars but it's only when things get rough that truly shows where players' hearts are at.

I don't know if I can blame the players for last nights game. Honestly, if things are going this bad and my coach rather goes to Fiji than stay with our team to fix things, I don't think my heart will be in it either. Why should I fight for this club when my coach's personal pleasure is more important?

And don't give me that BS about family comes first. Yes, sure, I agree, but we are talking about a freakin holiday here over a man "supposedly" fighting for his career and his beloved club's dignity. If Benji's wife truly loves him, I'm sure she would understand and will support him too.

Sorry, that just the way I see it.
Good post…

The work / life balance that Benji is seeking is a nice idea, but you have to establish yourself first. In most careers that involves prioritising your work above everything, not going for a mid season freshen up in Fiji with your family.

It would be interesting to know how much of a work / life balance other young coaches like Payten, Webster and Ciraldo have, I would imagine they are 100% focused on football right now and will worry about family time and freshening up in October.

An assistant coaching role may be more suited to the work / life balance that Benji is chasing…

The 2023 season ended 1st of September. Week 1 of preseason started 6th of November.
9 and a bit weeks.
Pre season training paused for Christmas break 22 December. It resumed 8th of January.
2 and a bit weeks.
These guys are not worked into the ground. They get plenty of time off. Far more than everyone else, bar bludging teachers. They don’t need a mid year holiday. They chose to have one. That week off could have been far better used considering how they performed in the second 40 last night.

I consider Work/life balance very important. None of my blokes ever work more than a 10hr day. Ever. None of them ever work more than 4 Saturdays in a row. No exceptions. All overtime is voluntary.
However if you only work 9 months a year already, taking a mid year break is taking the piss.

The culture of WT is one of no accountability. Has been since our GF win in 05 & the club has desperately clung on to anything & anyone involved.
2 of the players most responsible for that win, and the run leading up to it, have, and still do, cast a shadow over the club. The hubris stemming from that win led to them feeling they were bigger than the club and here we are all these unsuccessful years later.
Benji & Robbie were great players for us but let's move on and create a club that players feel honoured to serve; not the other way round.

Benji can't be sacked.

But Richo isn't doing his due diligence if he doesn't have a serious one on one heart to heart with as soon as tomorrow. If benji leaves that chat still thinking he can do it, then ok. But the assistants must change to give a more experienced staff.
