Is it time to aim for a two tier competition?

Is it time to have a two tier competition with promotion & relegation?

The NRL has already decided to expand to 18 teams, with V'landys hinting he'd like to see 20 teams.

If he wants to expand to 20 it makes having one tier less appealing in my POV.

I'd much rather see two tiers of 12 teams, with a team from the NSW Central Coast, another team say from South Brisbane based in Logan even a Western NSW team based in Orange or even the Riverina in Wagga as well as the proposed move by the Bears to WA and a second NZ team based in the South Island is a no brainer. I'm not sold on a PNG team like V'landys, Abdo & Albo due to security concerns for visiting Aussie & Kiwi players, staff, family & supporters.

Adding the teams I have mentioned could make 24 teams in two 12 man team competitions a reality & a much better option than a bloated single NRL competition.
I believe it would be a greater source of sponsorship & advertising $$ than one single comp.

Thoughts?

Imagine all the spoons we would miss out on if it happens 🤣
It's a good idea but it will also take alot of time & money
They should also do this with the A league

I think what we think matters little to the powers that be.

I think we continue failing until they force relocation...
Both Penrith & the Doggies are eyeing off our junior catchment area, they also have some clout at NRL HQ, that's scary for us.

There's also a few sports journo (hacks who I won't name, they know who they are) who'd love to see the club booted or packed up and sent to WA or the South Island of NZ.

Sure, cut out a Sydney team if they want, but not one that two foundation clubs sacrificed themselves to create.

Western Sydney including South West Sydney doesn't need to prune teams, "if" there are too many Sydney clubs in the NRL (as some pundits claim) it is the clubs closer to the Sydney CBD and the coast, some basically just a good walk apart, that should be trimmed first.

that is why playing out of Parramatta stadium like nomads is not a good idea
makes relocation kind of easier

I'm not saying to do it in 2025, 2026 or even 2027 but I think it could be done by 2028, it would be a travesty if it couldn't become reality by 2030 at the latest.

Funnily enough, V'landys was quoted today saying he wants a 20 team comp in time for the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane.

If all the games are streamed telecast live from a spectator point of veiw it makes sense, but for the life of me i cant really see how a team can climb a tier and stay there without the backing of a mad millionaire benefactor,or cannibalize their own group ,dilute their own comps to pool resources to play in the spotlight .In a perfect world 2nd tier teams get kick backs for producing juniors. No one really gives a tinkers cuss about their local comp apart from 50-100 people that turn up(godbless ya Mum).In summary , if pay per view can afford it- im in

Fast forward 20 years. Western Tigers United are firmly on the bottom of NRL’s 2nd division after a record loss to the Ettalong Emus 98-3. This masthead can report that Benji Marshall is considering hanging the whistle after 2 decades of failure and the club teetering on the brink of relegation to the newly formed NRL 3rd division, which incorporates mixed teams in a touch footy competition. In more positive news for tigers fans, Balmain leagues club’s has submitted updated plans to local government for approval of the dilapidated site.

Promotion relegation in my opinion is a terrible idea for the NRL. It would simply be an endless cycle of the newly promoted clubs getting flogged every week to be then relegated to be replaced the next year by clubs that get flogged every week.
We already have "star players" wanting out of struggling teams to go to better performing sides in the same competition. How do you convince these players to honour their contracts after they have been relegated?, Or if the boom rookie emerges at a tier 2 club?

Who is funding this 2nd tier. The country is just not big enough (especially given its already split with 2 major football codes) to financially support a quality 2nd tier. Just look at the current reserve grade funding and viewership to see this. I don't see the sponsorship and/or TV dollars being anywhere near enough.

WT deserve to be relegated, and some other teams probably deserve a shot. But the points gregjim made above seem pretty spot on.

The wheels fell off when Scott Prince went to Qld. The WT never recovered. They might have done if Lui hadn't been a DV offender, but once he was gone, it was game over. Since then, it's been years of failing to turn natural running 5/8s into game organisers.

I’d prefer to go back to the NSW RL days and bring back Bears, Steelers, Wests, Balmain and Jets. Maybe Glebe, Annandale, Sydney Uni and Dirty Reds as well. QLD clubs can get stuffed, Melbourne can get stuffed and Warriors can get stuffed. Maybe Newcastle and Canberra get a leave pass but only just.
And Saturday games on the ABC with Warren Boland. Much better than every game being televised. That destroys the mystique and we get to witness how bad our team is going every single week.
Origin was better then too. No one got to see Lewis, Miles, Mal, Dowling and co. apart from SOG and it was great.
Imagine if we only had to endure Thurston, Cronk, Smith, Slater 3 times a year. Much better.
