Onitoni Large

We really need to do something about becoming a more desirable club, which ultimately is the only way to stop our young players threatening to leave.
Obviously much improved on field results goes a long way to achieving this.
Really it’s a crazy situation where a 17 year old kid is upset because there is not a vacant position for him to walk into when he comes into grade. Be a nice if him, his family and his manager , viewed the situation as a massive challenge.

Obviously some one behind the scenes has found him a new home probably near the sea

It’s a bit rich.
He is 16/17 now. We have Olam in one Centre and daylight in the other. Jarome joins next year for 5 years which may be his last contract.
Onitoni would be 22 - 23 when that expires.
In the meantime he could sure up a centre spot and learn off Jarome if his desire is to play in the halves long term and potentially provide back up or even un seat Bula at fullback.

That would be a great outcome for the club

That is mature thinking. You are obviously not a 16 yo who wants everything given to them on a platter and right now!

That literally IS everything given to him on the planet. A first grade spot , no pressure to lead a team , learning on the job , maybe filling wherever needed and a clear succession plan to take over when you are mature enough to handle the responsibilities .
I’d say it’s his manager looking to strike whilst the iron is hot , because he is no guarantee to be there when Onitoni is on the massive coin .

Thank you. This is the sort of stuff our coaching team should be talking about with these kids. Succession planning and goal setting. Give them something to aim at. Give them some direction. They will improve at a much faster rate.
When Galvin had a light bulb moment, after John’s saying he should aim to have a club legacy, it kinda left a question in my mind…what are we not doing?

Absolutely, this should be ingrained in the club.
Recruiting above your position I.e Jarome should elevate your interest and determination to make the top grade, not have you heading out the door because you feel your opportunity is blocked. Especially when you are too young to even sign a first grade contract to begin with.
The good news is if he has a current deal; with the new laws around junior contracts he technically isn’t off contract and available until mid April (first 6 weeks of the season) of his final year not Novemeber the year before.

For so long our club Culture and identity has been tarnished by people in power not doing the correct thing in relation to juniors, pathways, accountability, and setting a certain standard.

In the last 2 years we have seen a great pathways program been rolled out that is slowly bearing rewards, we have a state of the art Centre of excellence finally up and running, this should be enough of a inducement for local promising players to stay the course.

Its difficult to know what's actually happening in this area of operation, there would be quite a few variables at play. On the surface though, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to be telling an 18yo that he's going to be fast tracked into his favourite position then sign a more experienced player on 4 years at 4 times the contract, then without delay, sign another at 5 years on $6m. I think Galvin is right to question the direction and intentions of the club, because their words may not be lining up with their actions? Gosh, if the goal was to develop some mistrust? Could they have done a better job?

But how many kids come straight into first grade into a starting position?
Just about every talented half I can think of has spent time at hooker by starting their career in firsts as a 14.
Forwards likewise take a roll as an interchange forward. The exception is some halves may be blooded at fullback or the centres instead of the interchange. This thread is about Onitoni also not Galvin but the same applies sure. But you’ve got to remember Galvin played some of the HM winning season in the halves out of desperation and the next season in SGball he was a starting half continuing on to his time in the CHS comp for Westfields. His rise wasn’t expected particularly as half.

The good news from that article is that he has another 4 years to go on his contract. If he's as good as the wraps he'll force his way in in the next 2 years.

Depending what happens with Galvin in that time the 6 spot could open up. He does need to focus on his running game as he wasn't really standing out in HM level earlier in the year.

But he is the best 16 year old in the comp according to his manager. You would thik he would be unstoppable at Mathews cup
Level haha

It's easily fixed Paws, if a player manager and club are talking about a player with more than a 1 year left on his contract NRL slaps a million dollar fine to manager and club, that will very quickly stop it but does the NRL have the KAHUNAS???
The rules currently allow agents to speak to any clubs about their client, the clubs just can't put their money where their mouth is and offer a contract for consideration. It's a huge grey area and why it keeps on happening. Who dobs in an agent if they take offers from clubs? The only people that would know about it are the agents, recruitment guys and maybe the player. It's not in their interests to disclose that they've broken the rules.

I'd like to see the NRL rule out independent agents. Make all agents NRL employees, on a base salary paid by the nrl, with no commissions from deals struck. Their job is simply to negotiate the best deal for their client, if there's no incentive in it for them to push agendas then it becomes a non issue.

I could see that running foul of the "Restraint of Trade" laws very quickly despite it's good intentions

How so? Agents don't have a divine right to profit from their clients, that's just the current system. Change the system, remove the incentive for bad behaviour won't still looking after the players.
