In 2009-2010 the Campbelltown City Council built the (admittedly miniscule) Eastern Grandstand, added extra concourse seating, fixed both "hill" ends and improved drainage both for the playing surface & in & around concourse seating with concreting fixing what was a muddy mess during wet periods & all for a $20M spend (in 2010 money). It took someone with the clout of V'landys to get the Inner West Council to do anything but cry poor mouth & put a cup out for fed or state funding.

West's Tigers, who had in private told council they would play more games at Campbelltown (if it was upgraded) reneged on that pledge. I can understand the Campbelltown City Council being reluctant to spend big (again) on CS when West's Tigers haven't put their money where there mouth is & have failed spectacularly when it comes to investing in the Macarthur, even Richo has admitted to that fact.

There's scope there to build a much bigger stadium at Campbelltown, the land is there & so is a leagues club. A full rebuild of CS could incorporate a Southern Grandstand attached to the leagues club like there is at Shark Park but that'd be $100M plus minimum, more likely twice that or more.

Just a comparatively small $40m spent on CS could provide much more seating (on top of better dressing rooms corporate facilities etc) than the $40M on Leichhardt is going to provide, easily twice as much as it could build a decent Northern Grandstand or greatly increase the size of either the Eastern or Western stand.

Its been there a lot longer than that

Its a shame the weathers crap again, been raining most of the morning in Sydney, it seems like every game , not just ours, ive watched this year has been poor weather

Bloody hell was hoping Cambo got a good turn out , meant to be sold out but rain and cold could knock it in half , we pray for 8000 again would be good any thing over a bonus

Thanks for the history lesson… geez they didn’t get much for their $20 mil did they ? I also understand that upgrade was at least partially provided with Federal Govt money and not just local funds … but thats 15 years ago ..what are they doing since then to upgrade THEIR asset ?

You also didn’t mention that inner west council are putting in $10m of their own money in this latest proposed upgrade …But Campbelltown isn’t even”crying poor mouth”… and this is my issue …. Nothing happens until people start to lobby for it …as the Inner West Council have been doing for LO for years

edit … here is an article confirming it was Rudd who contributed some/ most(?) of the the money?

The Fed's only put in $8m of that $20m and by the way, Campbelltown City Council had lobbied both State & Federal governments for that funding.

Campbelltown City Council covers a much, much larger area, with a constantly growing population & doesn't have the luxury of much state or federal funds being spent on essential infrastructure where as Inner West Council has a lot of its infrastructure paid for & built by both the state & feds due to its proximity to the city & the multiple major traffic/light rail routes etc running through it.

Campbelltown City Council has had to commit funds to so many "greenfield" sites as it constantly grows including new roads, sewerage/drainage networks (indeed complete new suburbs) & other infrastructure having to be designed & built from scratch whilst the Inner West Council basically only has to maintain or at best improve infrastructure already in place.

Comparing the 2 councils is like comparing Apples & Pears.

Campbelltown City Council has time & time again said they would (if assisted by state & or federal funding) be willing to further upgrade CS but with the covenant that WT would commit to playing a lot more games there. WT reneged on the council regarding use of CS last time around, once bitten?

Do you have a link to the funding of the previous upgrade ? It’s surprising to me that the Local Govt would put in the most amount of money ..

they can’t hide behind something that happened 15 years ago as reasons for not doing something now …that is just excuse making

They got a lot more for that $20m than what Leichhardt will get for the $40m.

Adjusted for inflation, that 2010 spend on CS of $20,000,000 is equal to approx $28,409,115* in 2024 money.

Luckily CS was already much better in terms of facilities even before the new Eastern Stand, extra concourse seating & all the drainage etc etc. Remeber also that $20m included work to the adjacent athletics field & running track!!

I know that new & improved toilet facilities, new women's change rooms etc are included in the cost on top of the rather small new Northern stand at Leichhardt, but geez CS got more work done on it for nearly (inflation adjusted) $12m less, that's worrying.

Surely there's more that can be done to improve Leichhardt with that amount of money?

Do you have a link of the cost of the previous works and how they were funded ?

I'm trying to find out the breakdown in costs between fed/state/local.

However in the mean time here's the thread from back in the day.

CS seating capacity was increased by 5000 with that upgrade, Leichhardt will only get an extra 3,300 seating or so is it?

The original article I quoted about Rudd said the stand capacity for CSS was 3600,..

We haven’t seen what the full scope of works are yet for LO..so a little pointless to do a like for like comparison at this stage

I would also suggest that construction costs have doubled at least since 2010… you can’t just apply an inflation base conversion

One thing is for certain, Campbelltown City Council has spent a LOT more on Campbelltown Stadium since 1988 (When it was Orana Park & the Magpies were the major Tennant) than Inner West Council has spent on Leichhardt within the same time frame.

Construction costs may now be more than official inflation, but doubled?
No way.
Sure house prices may have doubled (or more) in that period but that's mainly land value.

Construction materials costs went up during COVID due to supply chain issues more than anything else and are now just starting to stabilise, Labour costs have risen much in line with inflation.

Regardless, no matter how you look at it, it's pretty clear Leichhardt isn't getting the same value out of it's $40M than Campbelltown got out of it's $20M (though some reports put the final cost at $22M??)

I'm still trying to find the breakdown of the funding for the 2009-2010 CS upgrade, we know the feds put in $8M so it's a matter of who contributed what to the remaining $12M out of council & state gov.

It appears neither of us have the details of the upgrade in 2010 at CSS and who funded what and even what the total amount was …so let’s move on from that hey ?

Well.. regardless of what has happened in the past … further funding is not going to be coming CSS way …unless they ask for it …which apparently you are saying they won’t do over a dummy spit 15 years ago when the WT had a different ownership structure and board ..

So if they aren’t going to ask for it …not much point people here having a dig at the other council who have asked for it… which was my original point

At Cambo you still get wet sitting in the stands when it rains.
Yeah it's pretty pointless the roof... Yiu need to be in the middle up the back to stay dry depending on which way the wind blowing the rain in.

What was the crowd today?
Looked about 10 or 11k
