John Bateman #268

I'm not totally convinced around the narrative that it's the Tigers fault these senior players don't aim up. IMO Api Koroisau is proving its on the individual to perform.

If you look at the players in question, I think it has more to do with them than us.

Bateman tries hard. As much as I have given it to him I've never questioned his effort, he is just dumb as dogs shit and past his best. Thats a bad combo to overcome. Smaller backrowers decline quickly.

Papali'i wanted out before he came here. He was never in it from the start. Lack of character right there.

Klemmer started to decline at around 26, 27 years of age. He went into self preservation mode to collect his pay check. He shows zero intent to have a leader of the pack mentality. That's poor character again. More on him than us.

So while we should and can be better as a club, IMO it's the poor character of the players we are signing that's the problem.

I've said for a long time, character needs to be the number one priority when signing someone.

1.Character
2.A desire to achieve something
3.And finally talent.

Workers who are hard and disciplined will lift us off the bottom along with enthusiastic kids.
Players like Ethan Bullemor, Jack Williams, Brad Parker, Kayal Iro. Adding 4 of these types of players round out the squad and allow us to progress. Then an elite outside back may become interested in joining a team on the up with a terrific spine and hard working group.
Apart from Api, what players with a good reputation have come here in recent years and improved that reputation?

There's a long list of those who haven't. And a long list of players who left here and went better at another club.

At some point, we have to accept that the culture of the club is a big part of the problem.

Totally.
We certainly won't miss his errors and brain fart penalties, constantly putting us on the back foot.
A hog in attack to boot, runs with blinkers on.

Have no idea why people are upset about this. The clear out was necessary and it's happening.
Bateman, Papalii, etc are respectable names who have given very little to WT.
Kudos to Richo and the administration for not being afraid to make such decisions.
Paps might have got better if he was given job security. He would have finally played under a decent half duo next year. Bateman played with enthusiasm something sadly lacking in our lot. Steph was obviously affected by his contract dealings. Just as well we have some great replacements for them like we did with Joe O and Blore.

Still the individuals choice IMO. You only can change culture when players drive it. Api is driving it, that's clear to see. The others have chosen not to.

Api may examplify courage and tenacity but his form has dropped off and he is the most penalised 9 in the game.
Api and the other 3 players you mentioned were signed believing Maguire or Sheens were providing the footy department leadership.
This is the one thing that continually undermines any effort to move forward, lack of stability and continuity.

Any members get a notification on us letting him go back ,
I didn't renew my membership this year but they have repeatedly sent me emails and requests for me to renew and dangling carrots because this year would have been 10 years, so they have been reminding me that I am missing out on the 10 year event and the 10 year members pin.

They have also sent me all the member emails all year, but I have received nothing about the Bateman situation.

Maybe they have finally given up on me or maybe we can say with confidence that there are definitely no more leaks, they don't even tell members what is going on. 🤣

There are 4 other players in our team that have given away more penalties than Bateman but he seems to have adopted that tag because if you say something enough people will believe it
Fair call, but as a team leader and fill in captain to still have the 5th highest penalties is not great, nor is it setting much of an example for the young players.

Have to admit he gets away with a lot of shit and I believe that if many other players did the same sorts of things he does they would probably get penalised more than what he does.

What about all the niggling, arguing, slow play the balls because of his carry ons, loss of momentum, all the crap in his game that is just as bad, if not worse than the penalties that are given away.

Sorry, but I have not been a Bateman fan and I don't believe he provides the value to this team that he costs in cap dollars and the transfer fee that was paid.

Maybe nothing is finalised with Bateman to Warrington yet. It's just a media story atm. I'm sure once sorted, we will be informed by the club.

Remember just because it appears in the media doesn't mean it's correct or finalised.

I think he's gone. It was worth a try, I thought, because he was fantastic with the Raiders.

Sadly, it seems that by the time JB arrived he was past his prime, and the team always going backwards, and with a rookie coach, wouldn't have helped.

The thing people are upset about is the possibility that he may come back to finish the rest of his contract.

Would be happy to hear that he is gone for good and has freed up a spot in the top 30 and saved us cap dollars.
